Francis is a symptom, a major symptom to be sure but still a symptom nonetheless, of a much greater error and that is the utter rot that Vatican II ushered in. Might as well look upon the disaster which is Joe Biden without taking into account what has happened to the Democratic Party of the USA.
When a major institution or any kind of entity or polity descends, as the Roman Catholic Church, the Democratic Party of the USA, Western Europe in toto, Western academia, etc., have, only to look at “symptoms” of the descension is simply not enough. Much more is required.

I checked the dates, and it looks like Martin Luther had already forked away (to use a software term) a branch of the Catholic Church, so maybe it might have survived in Germany, Holland, the Nordic countries and Britain. But had Rome fallen, the Catholic church would likely have ended. The Eastern Orthodox Church had already fled to the “third Rome” – Moscow, so the two major Christian denominations in the world would have been the Protestant and the Russian Orthodox Churches

my point to g is that Christianity is protected by God and Jesus. Nothing can stand against it, while those who **believe** can be killed by those who oppose Christianity.
There were times in the past when Christians were persecuted by some people who **claimed** to be Christian, burning Bibles, burning the faithful at the stake, hounding Bible translators, putting people like Galileo in prison.
Yet, even that kind of persecution…seemingly coming from within ( I say “seemingly” because it was unchristian in the extreme)…was not successful in stopping the growth and spread of belief and faith in Jesus.
However, you are right about how it could have been had “Rome fallen” to islam.
Looks like with this guy in the seat of the vatican, Rome has fallen to islam.

OK, Somehistory. But no one could practice Christianity fully–or safely, anywhere in Europe–or in the rest of the West, depending on when Europe fell to Islam and under what circumstances.

Jesus said that every Christian would be persecuted….some to the death. That is why He said, “Count the cost.” and “Pick up (your stake, tree, cross) and follow me.”
He also said, “The one enduring to the end **will**be saved,'” so “enduring” means each one is put through the fire of persecution.
Jesus also said, “Those days will be cut short, or no flesh will be saved.”
So, Christianity stays alive, while the faithful suffer persecution.
“When you are persecuted in one city, flee to the next, ” Jesus said.
People who claimed to be Christian, persecuted and put to death some men who translated the Bible so it could be understood by the average person in their language. Bibles were burned. But, we still have the Bible and in just about every spoken language on earth.
Just as we have Christianity every where on earth, even in lands where Christians are persecuted and murdered.
Several years ago, I was sent a list of nations where Christians live and practice…to some extent…following Jesus. It was every nation.
Jesus foretold that too…”The good news will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to **all the nations**. And then, the end will come.”
Christians can be, and are, murdered, but Christianity cannot be killed.
And that is a large part of the “Good news” of God’s Kingdom.

There is something to be said for faiths that don’t have an established pecking order right at the top. Such as Judaism, Hinduism. They’re not in a position to spread idiotic ideas among their followers about the goodness/greatness of islam, in the way that others, such as the Pope, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Grand Patriarch of Mosccow, the Dalai Lama, et al do. At least the Burmese and Sri Lankans are Theravada Buddhists, so they typically don’t listen to the Dalai Lama

The mosque is next-door to the city’s Catholic cathedral, and the pope visited an underpass known as the “tunnel of friendship” which connects the places of worship.
As part of the event, the pope also listened to Islamic prayers being recited by a young blind girl named Syakila, the winner of a national Quran recitation competition.
His Indonesia trip and the signing of the declaration are in keeping with his bridge-building approach. But while about 87% of Indonesia’s 280 million people practice Islam, the visit also puts the spotlight on its 8.6 million Catholics and other minorities.”
