Pope: ‘All Religions Are Paths to God’

The pontificate of Pope Francis, which has now lasted for over eleven years, has been filled with controversies. The pontiff has on numerous occasions made off-the-cuff remarks which seemed to contradict the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, forcing Vatican officials to issue “clarifications” that emphasized that the pope was not a heretic and was not changing Catholic teaching. On Friday, he did it again, insisting that all religions were “like different languages in order to arrive at God, but God is God for all.” Coming from the leader of a Church that claimed for centuries to be the only sure and true path to God, this was, to say the least, startling.

The Catholic Herald reported Friday that the pontiff “on Friday wrapped up a three-day visit to Singapore by declaring that ‘all religions are a path to God.’” The pope explained: “They are like different languages in order to arrive at God, but God is God for all. Since God is God for all, then we are all children of God.”

The Catholic Herald noted that in saying this, the pope had set aside his prepared remarks and was speaking extemporaneously. He added: “If you start to fight, ‘my religion is more important than yours, mine is true and yours isn’t’, where will that lead us? There’s only one God, and each of us has a language to arrive at God. Some are [Sikh], Muslim, Hindu, Christian, and they are different paths [to God].”

At first glance, this appeared to contradict Jesus’ statement: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by me” (John 14:6). Scriptural passages of all faiths, however, can be interpreted in many different ways, and so while it may be possible to find a way to harmonize the pope’s words with those of Christ, it would be more difficult to reconcile Francis’ statement with the Roman Catholic Church’s Second Vatican Council.

After detailing some of the similarities between the teachings of the Catholic Church and those of various non-Christian religions, the Council stated:

The Catholic Church rejects nothing that is true and holy in these religions. She regards with sincere reverence those ways of conduct and of life, those precepts and teachings which, though differing in many aspects from the ones she holds and sets forth, nonetheless often reflect a ray of that Truth which enlightens all men. Indeed, she proclaims, and ever must proclaim Christ “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6), in whom men may find the fullness of religious life, in whom God has reconciled all things to Himself….It is, therefore, the burden of the Church’s preaching to proclaim the cross of Christ as the sign of God’s all-embracing love and as the fountain from which every grace flows.   1. From a 30,000 ft view, the Pope is right. All religions (excepting islam, which I’ll continue to maintain is not a religion) are paths to Gods. There’s no point pretending that the deity of Judeo-Christian theology is the same as that of the Daoists or Shintos or Sikhs, much less Hindus. Oh, and there is Buddhism, which is almost an Atheistic faith, except that certain sects like Theravada seem to celebrate certain Hindu traditions as well. Best way of capturing it is that each religion has its own roadmap to its own deity, or set of deities if it is polytheistic

    Only thing – it’s a little strange for the leader of a major sect of a major religion to say that, w/o implying any partiality towards the church that he heads. But as a non-Christian, I completely agree w/ him

  4. When Pope Francis said the fool statement that “All religions are paths to God” he was ,indeed, speaking in contrast to the teachings of Jesus found John 14:6. In which He declared ” I am the way the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father expect by Me.”

    The Pope’s claim is also proven by false because taught about entering heaven ” Enter into the narrow gate for wide is the gate and broad that leads to destruction, and and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and diffident is the way which leads to life , and there are few who find it. ” Matthew 7 :13,14 .[N.K.J.V.]

    If what the Pope said was true than his utterance about “All religions are paths to God.” would not have been contradiction to the Wisdom and Truth of what Jesus taught.

    What the Pope said in view of the Bible ,which informs its reader “To the law and the testimony ! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in then.” Isaiah 8:20. It may be concluded , in spite of the strong favorable emotions that many people feel for him, Pope Francis must be a false teacher who has no spiritual light in him .at all.

    In addition, it’s very important to define and understand words, especially words contained in the Bible. When Jesus used that word “destruction” in Matthew 7:13, that words doesn’t means ” destruction of being ” but ” destruction of well being.” As in when Jesus preached about the terrible suffering of man who continues to exist in hell. Luke 16:19-24.

    • I find it interesting that none of the quotations are first person (from Jesus) but are statements from John, Luke, or Matthew.

      • The Bible books of Matthew John and Luke as well as the Old Testament book of Isaiah are all included, as are part of the Divine Sacred Cannon of Scripture of God’s Word, the Bible.

        As Second Timothy 3:16. reads “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine , for reproof, for correction , for instruction in righteousness” [N.K.J.V.]

        Therefore, the Bible ,the Word of God overrules and overrides the words and teachings of men.

        Be that man Pope Francis , Ayatollah Khamenei , or Charles Darwin.

        • Same old same old debunked rubbish falsely pitting some men against God while totally oblivious to the fact that his own approach and faulty interpretation of 2 Timothy 3:16 is done by the mere man he is who, based on his own criticism of other mere men should also criticize himself for claiming he knows better than they do. LOL

          Indeed, just another silly Protestant who uses a bogus Bible (NKJV), the first manifestation of which was not published until some 1,600 years after Christ. And of course, those things in the KJV that are accurate come from the lone accurate bible as determined by the Catholic Church; not the Protestant rebellion inaccurately labeled by mere men as a reformation.

          Good readers: do not accept anything presented by the mere man Walter Sieruk who knows much, much, much less than true faithful people serving God.

      • Perhaps the worst Pope in history, he is not “officially an apostate,” but, unfortunately, Robert Spencer is an apostate from the Catholic Church after he rejected the Catholic Church and joined a schismatic Orthodox Church a while back. Robert continues to attack the Pope (often correctly, at least in part), and he also wrote a small book that lamely claims to demonstrate some errors in Catholicism itself, and that such supports his apostasy, but his promoted ‘new historical facts’ are not the case (just the same old same old in a new bottle), while better scholars on the history and ongoing schism like Joe Heschmeyer and Eric Ybarra have written articles and books, and also produced videos that can be viewed on YouTube, etc., and their insightful works demonstrate when specific topics are addressed the errors of Robert and his fellow traveler defenders of the Orthodox Church as they opine on the same specific topics. Anyone interested in honestly examining the Catholic-Orthodox schism and the issues arising from it should read Robert’s book, but also read the books and articles, and/or watch the videos of Heschmeyer and Ybarra and decided for themselves who provides the better case.

  6. I can reconcile the Pope’s statement with the words of Jesus: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by me” (John 14:6).

    Regardless of your religion, or lack thereof, Jesus is the one who will judge your worthiness. If, like most people who have ever existed, you lived in a land without mass communication and global reach, does that mean you are barred from heaven because you never learned of Jesus’ teachings even though you lived a productive life and behaved in a way that Jesus would approve of? If so, then heaven is not a welcoming place.

    What if you rejected Christianity but still lived by the golden rule and respected all others around you? Would Jesus judge you as unworthy because you weren’t baptized? I would hope not.

    If Francis considers Islam a ‘path to God’ then that means God is an evil being who sanctions the murder of all who live by His prior teachings. It would appear to conflict with Romans 12:19, where God says ‘Vengeance is mine”. Islam cancels out the Old and New testaments. It’s a path to God? Ugh!

  8. Someone congratulate the Baha’i religion for converting the Pope. He is now professing their belief instead of Catholicism. Just nother little step and he’ll arrive at the Unitarian Church.

  12. It should be noted that the translation of what the pope said in Italian “all religions are a path to reach God,” was mistranslated to become “Religions are seen as paths trying to reach God” as well as other mistranslations.
    So, Vatican knows their pope is not in line with what Jesus says, but they try to cover it up.
    Vatican must have learnt well from the Islamists.

  13. The Holy Roman Church with its avarice and thirst for power and control is exactly what Jesus warned us against. They lost their way long before Islam even existed. Even stopping priests marrying was primarily to keep their savings within the church. They do not speak for god.

    • Agreed. The Apostle Paul foretold it: “In later periods of time, some will fall away from the Faith….forbidding to marry.”

  15. Pope Francis should open the gates of the Vatican and welcome in a few thousand of his muslim/islamic migrants. Of course he won’t, those hiding behind walls and gates are not worried about the threats open migration creates for the average person.

  16. It’s truly amazing that a person in his elevated position can be so wrong so often. He’s not even like a stopped clock. Perhaps it’s his elevated position taking all of the oxygen from his brain.

    Not only did Jesus say, “I am the Way,….no one comes to the Father except through me.”
    He also said, “The true worshippers will worship the Father in Spirit and Truth and the Father is looking for such like ones to worship Him.” Jesus said that to the Samaritan woman at the well. He had told her that “you worship what you do not know.”

    Of course, if the pope was any scholar of the Bible, and had any knowledge and understanding of people, he would know at least two things.

    1 is: *not all religions are on the path to pleasing the God of the Bible; The Only God to Christians and Jews.
    2. All other religions of the world have their own god/gods/goddesses and don’t care what the Bible says.
    These ones also don’t care what the pope has to say about them or their religions.

    So the lying fool is not pleasing anyone. The false shepherd, wolf in sheep’s clothing, ravenous wolf and rotten tree, is not pleasing the God he professes to worship.
    He is not pleasing the Son of God, Jesus Christ for whom he claims to speak.
    He is not pleasing Christians, because Christians can see he is trying to mislead them down a path to destruction; as Jesus said “many” are finding that path, believing that they are doing right.
    And he is not pleasing people of other religions as they don’t see themselves needing to please, needing to believe in or to worship the God of the Bible and His Son.

    The only thing this pope is good for, is showing a good example of a lying fool who thinks of himself “more than is necessary to think.”

  17. If all paths led to the same God, it wouldn’t matter which path a person took.
    One could be a loving, kind, peaceful, truthful individual who might kill a fly, poisonous snake, or someone attempting to kill another, but would not go about raping and murdering.
    And another, could be the person who would go about raping and murdering, and lie about his *reasons* for doing those things.

    And that’s not rational.

    Really–*all* religions? Even the worship of Ba’al and the Aztc faith, both of which involvd human sacrific? And Isla, with its bloody horrors?

    This is not even a matter of Christian doctrine–although for the Pope, it *should be*–but of basic morals. Clearly not all faiths are moral.
