Minneapolis: First Somali Refugee to Run Public Housing Admits to Stealing Millions

1 in 3 Minneapolis Public Housing residents are Somalis.

Glass ceilings get broken, then wallets get stolen. Only in America? No. Only in Gov. Walz’s Minnesota.

But first, let’s pause to celebrate the incredible historic moment of the first Somali refugee to run a public housing agency.

Sharmarke Issa was confirmed by the Minneapolis City Council to chair Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA). Issa is the first immigrant and first East African to serve as chair of the MPHA Board of Commissioners.

“Having grown up in in Minneapolis public housing after coming to our city as a refugee, Sharmarke’s story of success highlights public housing as vital asset in Minneapolis,” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. “Sharmarke’s life experience and background in urban planning are especially important to MPHA’s mission. At a time when the federal government continues to shortchange housing funding, he will be a skilled steward of our public housing infrastructure who understands and centers the needs of residents.”

Approximately one-third of Minneapolis Public Housing residents are members of the East-African community.

One third. 1 in 3 are Somalis. Just one of those little factoids about diversity being our strength. Kinda like Issa’s stewardship.

An Edina man who chaired the board of the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal wire fraud charges for his role in the Feeding Our Future nutrition program fraud scheme.

That was a $250 million social welfare fraud to help the Somali community.

Sharmarke Issa, 42, admitted to running entities that laundered federal funding for the scheme, including Wacan Restaurant LLC and a nonprofit called Minnesota’s Somali Community.

Issa was responsible for $7.6 million of the $50 million in fraud scheme money that the federal government says it lost,

Issa claimed to serve 2.3 million meals to children at his food sites. He admitted that some of the fraud scheme money instead went to properties he purchased in Edina, Minneapolis and elsewhere.

Everyone is now pretending to be shocked and outraged at water being wet.

When Sharmarke’s name first surfaced in 2022 as part of the case, Frey said the allegations against him were “appalling” and “run counter to the values that we are entrusted to uphold in the City of Minneapolis.”

Forget it, Jake, it’s Somalitown.

    Why make such a big deal of the ‘first’? The first meal a new bride cooks will not likely be her *best.*
    The first time a young man sits behind the wheel to drive on his own, will not likely be the *best* he will ever do.

    This louse, this creep….this mozlum….stole for his own dirty pockets. And he’s supposed to pay a ‘fine.’ from where will the money come ? From what he stole? Tale it out of his ugly, thieving hide.

    All this hype about the ‘first’ mozlum this, and the ‘first’ mozlum that….How often has it turned out to be a really good thing?

    • There are quite a number of female politicians I’d be very happy to vote for–and many more I’d be at least OK with–but Kamala Harris is not one of them…

      And electing Muslims as such should not even be a goal–any more than electing neo-Nazis should be.

      • It’s my feeling that the one who is best for the job…whatever the job is…should be the person who gets the job. Whether a man or woman, Black or White, should not be the criteria for choosing someone to run a large nation of more that 330 million people.

        For the job of running public housing, there were likely many people who could have done a good job, perhaps some who would have been excellent, but a mozlum was chosen….because he was mozlum.

        And people are going to vote for harris because she’s a woman and Black.

  4. Why isn’t he serving a jail term? Let that be a better lesson for the Somali community to learn. What they have learned is you can get way with the theft of millions of dollars from the US Government and not serve a day in jail. Definitely worth the “danger” of stealing if you can. Some lesson.

    Why does the US continue to help Third World peoples by taking them in from a war zone in their own countries only to have them steal millions of US taxpayer money. Helping such people eventually becomes a burden on the American public well beyond the cost of trying to “rescue” them in the first place.

    We lost American service men in Somali. They were killed in gunfights with Somali gunmen backed by a war lord. For what??? So this thief can come to the US and rob America blind?

    And to top it off we get a horrible Congresswoman who was also “rescued” by Christian services in Somali and she is at the fore front of backing Terror gangs in the world liker Hamas. How exactly did we in the US benefit from the entire Somali “rescue” policy? Oh you mean by doing the “Christian thing” by assisting the unfortunate people there, we register a “Gold Star” for the American lives lost and American philanthropy right?

    • bill clinton is no Christian. He is the one who brought in so many somalians….including ilhan elmi, alias omar and her terrorist father.
      And many, many somalians, including some al shabab terror members, sneaked in to the country and were not rounded up and shipped out.

      It’s really tiresome when Christians are blamed for the world’s problems with islam and mozlums.
      those organizations which pretend to be Christian, and get money for *helping* ‘refugees” to come here, are not Christian.

      And lets’ not forget that bo refused to allow real refugees….Christians….to enter the country. but he did bring in tens of thousands of mozlums….just as biden has done.

      Put the blame where it belongs.

  5. So once again the blatent dishonesty of another Somali immigrant hits the news. However I think we have unearthed a major issue here. An immigrant from a consistantly dishonest nation. Likely without any pre US entry background Was appointed to a high office without adequate supervision. Time for some management accountability. Even so this is still not as bad as marrying your brother to get him into the US.

    • In 2010, the FBI was concerned with the number of illegals from somalia coming into the country, noting that many were members of al shabab.

    • The crimes listed in the article you refer to, are all part of a RICO description. Any and all in this country should be prosecuted using that Act. It could/would put a dent, just as it has done with other mobsters, the Mafia, Cosa Nostra, the AB….
      If only the different states’ attorneys, or the DOJ were interested.

  7. It has been observed and recorded, multiple times, by different observers, at various locations that common behaviors vary by population and cultural practices/genetics. It is that way for the entire natural world, and humans are no exception. Old saying: you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Why white cultures/societies seem to expect the same mores in others, especially imported en masse, is just denial. And stupidity.
