Not content with the 205 attacks on Hindus that have been perpetrated since August 5 to mark the end of the rule of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, some Bangladeshi Muslims are now baying for the blood of tribals and the Buddhists.
Muslim mobs launched targeted attacks on Buddhists and Hindu Tripuris (non-Muslim tribals) on Thursday, September 19, at Dighinala and Khagrachhari Sadar in the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh. Members of the “Bengali Chhatra Parishad” (Bengali Students Union) started the unrest in response to the death of a local Muslim criminal named Mohammed Mamun. Mamum was a known robber with 17 cases lodged against him, and had been caught stealing a motorcycle the previous day. The student union organized a procession on the 19th to protest Mamum’s death, and then utilized this incident to attack the ethnic groups.
Reports suggest that the mob set fire to over 200 homes and businesses belonging to the minority communities. They stormed a Buddhist temple and carried out arson attacks throughout the region, resulting in the deaths of several locals. As per the initial reports, the death toll was three, although locals from Chittagong attested that the official reports were deceiving and the actual death toll was much higher. Seventeen others also sustained severe injuries. The deceased have been identified as 50-year-old- Dhananjoy Chakma, 25-year-old Rubel Tripura, and 20-year-old Junan Chakma, all of whom hailed from indigenous minority communities. Though the carnage on the first day was brought under control to some extent by late evening, the mob swarmed in again the following morning and continued with the rampage all day on Friday, September 20.
Shortly afterward, a local mosque began utilizing its loudspeakers to spread a false claim regarding the tribals attacking Bengalis. The claim led to more Muslims joining the raging crowd in committing large-scale destruction and destroying everything the ethnic people owned.
The affected areas are part of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, which is home to indigenous communities including the Chakma, Tripuri, Marma, Chak, Bom, Khumi, and Lushei, as well as a few other tribal groups. People living on this rugged terrain have challenging conditions and almost no employment opportunities. Most run little shops selling sundry items in order to put two square meals on the table. They live in small, fragile houses. All of these went up in flames. There was smoke all around. Speaking to the Daily Star, a victim named Insta Chakma recounts: “Like many, we fled from that area and had no shelter in the forest. Fire and smoke could be seen from the forest.”
The recent minority pogroms carried out in Bangladesh have demonstrated that such massacres erupt in one remote location and spread like wildfire through the length and breadth of Bangladesh. So what started in Khagrachari didn’t take long to spread to the adjoining Rangamati district. There were reports of local mosques inciting their followers to target the minority groups in the district.
Amid all these disturbing advancements in the region, the Director of the Rights & Risks Analysis Group (RRAG), Suhas Chakma, made a shocking accusation against the Bangladeshi army. He alleged that the “Bangladesh Army supported the burning down of the Chakma shops and houses at Dighinala Sadar today. Consequently, there is no Chakma left in the Dighinala sadar area.”
He added, “Such act of violence underscores the growing insecurity faced by indigenous communities in the CHTs. The issue of lack of safety and security for the Chakmas will be raised before international bodies, including the United Nations Human Rights Council.” The local administration agreed to take action only after most of the damage was done, and imposed a curfew in Rangamati from 1:30 pm onward on Friday.
The media is also working hand-in-glove with the jihadis, and tried to paint the entire massacre as a clash between the Tribals and the Bengalis (that is, as in the Bengali-speaking population, regardless of religious identity). But this was just another nefarious attempt by the Bangladeshi media to shield the Muslims of the country, and it was short-lived: victims and witnesses confirmed the fact that only Muslims had partaken in the onslaught against the Tripuris and the Chakmas (tribals) who follow Buddhism or Hinduism. Again, the mob that set the Buddhist temple ablaze was also solely made up of Muslims.
The conflict between Muslims and the tribal community has been ongoing for decades. The aggression of Muslim groups towards the ethnic groups has been just as fierce as their intolerance towards Hindus. They have repeatedly attempted to convert the Chakmas, Tripuris, and other tribes to Islam. People of these ethnic groups live in abject poverty, and to capitalize on their plight, Islamic groups often invite them to join the Islamic fold in exchange for lucrative offers; they intimidate and threaten these people when they decline their offer.

One more of the glorious achievements of the Brits – redrawing maps in continents they had no business in being. The area referred to in this story – be it Arakan or Chittagong Hill Tracts – was predominantly Buddhist, and ought to have gone to either Burma, or at worst, India in 1947. Instead, the Brits, when they drew up those maps, awarded it to Pakistan
Cue 75 years, and you now have a genocide of Hindus and Buddhists in the area. Incidentally, this is the reason Burma kicked out its muslims, and why every political party in Burma agrees that muslims don’t belong in that country. Notice that muslim riots are often started from mosques, the holy place of Islam. And mosques are also often used as hiding places for kidnaped victims, rapes, executions and weapon warehouses. Yet, muslims are angry if people come into mosques wearing shoes or sandals, but not when mosques are used as sites of crimes.
