A Very Short List, and a Very Long Question

I was wondering, not exactly idly, where American foreign aid now is sent, and found online a list of the ten countries that receive the most aid from Washington. Here is that list:

In 2023, the United States spent nearly $61 billion on foreign aid. Fully half of that budget has gone to just ten countries:

1. Ukraine ($16.4 billion)

2. Israel ($3.3 billion)

3. Ethiopia ($1.95 billion)

4. Jordan ($1.65 billion)

5. Egypt ($1.43 billion)

6. Afghanistan ($1.19 billion)

7. Somalia ($1.13 billion)

8. Yemen ($1.05 billion)

9. Congo ($987 million)

10. Syria ($896 million)

Now I have no objection to aid for Ukraine, as it fights to push Putin’s troops out of the country. This unusually large sum — $16.4 billion, and much more so far in 2024 — far outstrips the amounts for the other recipients of aid. This aid only started to be given in 2020, after Russia invaded Ukraine, and it will not continue at anything like that level once that Ukraine-Russia war is over.

As for #2 on the list, I certainly do not object to the sums given to Israel, which for the fourth time in its young life is having to fight for its very existence (the previous wars were in 1948, 1967, and 1973) as it faces a seven-front war, with Hamas in Gaza, with Hezbollah in Lebanon, with the Houthis in Lebanon, with Assad’s army in Syria, with assorted terrorist groups — Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine — in Judea and Samaria, with the Shi’a militia, Kata’ib Hezbollah, in Iraq, and looming behind them all, pulling the strings of these various proxies, the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Nor do I begrudge Ethiopia its aid, for that Christian country has endured several years of severe drought and internal conflict, including the war involving the Ethiopian central government and the northernmost region of Tigray. Ethiopia has once again become engaged in violent internal conflict, this time involving militia groups from the regions of Amhara and Oromia. And Ethiopia has long had a close relationship with the United States for many decades, beginning under the reign of Haile Selassie. The amount we provide is to help the government restore peace; as with the aid given to Ukraine, it isn’t intended to be a longterm commitment.

But. beyond that, I wonder. Of the seven remaining countries on the list of the top ten recipients, all but one are Muslim countries. Why are we transferring wealth to Muslim countries when the Arab states of the Gulf have trillions of dollars in their sovereign funds? Why do we not insist that the rich Arabs should be helping their brethren, instead of assuming that we should support Muslim states that, precisely because they are Muslim, cannot possibly be our friends (as the Qur’an directs them not to be; see suras 3:28 and 5:51)? Saudi Arabia has more than $1 trillion in its sovereign wealth fund. The UAE has even more: $1.7 trillion. In the first half of 2024 the sovereign wealth funds of five Gulf Arab states — Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain — invested $39 billion. Surely they can spare $8 billion to provide to other Arab states, which is roughly the total the United States now gives to the seven Muslim states on the list above.

For reasons that deserve to be pondered, Anwar Sadat got the American aid ball rolling for Egypt with his “prince-of-peace” impersonation. And that money has continued ever since, despite the litany of human rights abuses in that country. Egypt need not be continuously bribed to keep the peace with Israel. What keeps the peace between Israel and Egypt is the IDF. If Egypt needs money, the Gulf states, whose monarchs share El-Sisi’s fear and hatred of the Muslim Brotherhood, should be happy to help.

Jordan, similarly, need not be given large sums by the Americans. The Hashemite king need only hold out his hand in Eleemosynary Position #1, and the Emirates and Saudis will be glad to help out a fellow monarch, especially one who doesn’t want to be overthrown by the two-thirds of his population that is Palestinian. That would be a dangerous example for the monarchs in the Gulf. King Abdullah, like the Saudi Crown Prince and the Emirati rulers, is prepared to repress the Muslim Brotherhood. He, too, needs no American bribe to keep the peace with Israel. The IDF maintains that peace.

    As an American is sure do have a problem with 16 billion dollars going to a war that should have never happened.. My kids and grandkids will foot that bill and i sure didn’t vote for it…

    • Fully agree w/ you. That war would never have happened if both the EU and NATO weren’t trying to pull Ukraine into their bloc over the objections of Moscow. In fact, had Russia been embraced as a geopolitical partner, as opposed to a rival, w/o requiring it to internally reform itself to the liking of Eurocrats, none of this would have happened

      So no, aside from the other objections, that we didn’t vote for it – which is correct, I also object to it for the reason that it’s money flushed down a black hole while there are hundreds of things here in the US that desperately need to be funded – w/o printing endless money and fueling inflation as a result

    • As an American who reads this website, surely you understand that EVERY dictator, bad actor, Islamic nations, as well as China are attempting to do? They are trying to take over other nations! Look at the UK. If the US does not attempt to stop Russia, then it’s setting a very dangerous precedent. This also goes for Islamic nations in the Middle East that think that Islam should be the only ones that exist there.

      Most of you don’t know this, but has it ever occurred to you that Islam is already running the US? What Hugh must not have gotten to yet is the deeper research which will reveal what I’m talking about. For example, all the refugees from Syria, with a letter to Biden & Homeland Security (from every bad actor and country one could think of, both here in the US and abroad), requesting a deferral from returning back to Syria.

      Then there’s ’Palestine’, which are classified by Biden as something like ‘It doesn’t matter if you have no ID, doesn’t matter if you’re generations away from being born in Palestine and live elsewhere but are Palestinian.’ So, in other words, any Muslim can claim this title, because no proof is needed! (It’s obvious the letter was written by a fanatical Islamist in our government). These Palestinians have been given special rights & privileges as well. They’ve been ushered into the US, but that’s where things on these US govt sites get blurred. On one hand they say these Pals have until August 2025 to remain in the US, but then also say they get social security cards, work permits, and voting rights! This administration is intentionally making things confusing – for us and perhaps the true intention of our nation because Islam is running it.

      Then there is the Afghans that supposedly helped the US with the war in Afghanistan. In 2021 the we quietly brought in 100,000. They were unvetted and unvaccinated, all while US military had to be vaxed or get a dishonorable discharge. But the 100,000 wasn’t enough for this Islamist government. The US is determined to find Afghanis around the world to bring them to the US. Go to Homeland Security (DHS.gov) and go to In Focus, then Operation Allies Welcome which is bringing in more refugees! Be sure to see all the dropdown boxes of all the benefits & special privileges they are receiving. Research this issue. It’s odd that they can’t speak English. It’s strange that the administration has kept so quiet about all of this and has had a complete media blackout. THEN, after being in the US for awhile and some of these Afghans didn’t pass the vetting ( they probably broke serious laws in the US) and were supposed to be deported – Homeland Security, according to an article “dropped the ball.” So these people are still here!

      Also, the money the US gives to radical Islamic nations for not just aid, but Climate Change is also evidence that this administration has been comprised COMPLETELY. We also give money for them to build “special projects”, money for promotion of maternity, and even mosques. What this admin DOESN’T do is insist that these nations don’t murder Christian or other minorities living in their nations.

      We are like the UK now, but because the US is so much larger, we can’t see it!

          Even for the ones supposedly “in the know”, they may not fully realize the EXTENT of the communist / muslim infiltration into our US government.

        • James, perhaps I was giving too much ‘benefit of the doubt’ to some posters/readers. It’s just when someone claims “most” this or that, I have to question their sources for such claims.
          No one ever knows everything, even those doing the things behind the scenes are unaware of other things going on behind them.

    • True. Hugh is overlooking the fact that after the overthrow of Haile Selassie, Ethiopia had been a communist ally of the Soviets during the Cold War, and is now a client state of Beijing. It’s by no means an ally of the US. Nor is it even strategically important, since Eritrea is not a part of it

  5. Since 1993, the US has provided through USAID over 8 billion in assistance to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. Over 600 million has been given to Palestinian leadership in 2024 alone. This does not include more hundreds of millions that our government has funneled through the UN and distributed through UNWRA. Over the last decade, numerous upper level Palestinian leaders have become billionaires themselves, siphoning off funds from the US, EU, UN and other donors.

    As a debtor nation with the largest debt in the world (now over 35 trillion) we have no business shoveling money to others to the detriment of our own citizenry, and certainly not to those who hate us and wish out destruction

  7. I’m not American but allow me to make some remarks.
    Trump made a very intelligent statement about Ukraine, meaning that for Europe the dangers of the Russian Ukraine war are far greater than for the USA and all states of Europe are giving much less money to back Ukraine then the USA. For sure they must give more and the USA should give less.
    And about Egypt, lately it became clear that they were profiting from the big weapons trade through the Philadelphi Corridor enabling Hamas to wage the present war against Israel. For their double face the USA should stop the aid. Let them ask it for Qatar.

    • I liked President Trump at the debate last night refusing to take the bait of stating whether he was for or against a Ukrainian victory (which is impossible) and insisting that he was for ending that war. None of his 3 opponents in the room remotely liked it

      I agree w/ Hugh that Egypt, which has been pretty obsequious to Saudi Arabia and backed them on everything – from giving land to them on their side of the Gulf of Aqaba for Neom, to backing them against Qatar 4 years ago, can get whatever money they need from them, and that the US should stop bribing them. If the Egyptians don’t like it and decide to invade Israel, they can lose the Sinai a second time, this time permanently

          I just saw Andrew Wilkow report an ABC whistleblower willing to state that the questions were provided to Kamala in advance. Essentially, her team was given a list of “sample questions”, which happened to be the exact questions asked at the debate. In addition, she was given assurances that Trump would be fact-checked but she wouldn’t. If that were the case, she wouldn’t need special earrings: the last 5 days of mugging would have helped her immensely. Although I don’t see how her debate staff thought that insulting Trump, who was a former president and the target of an assassination attempt, was a good idea

          I think it backfired. A Reuters survey of Undecided showed 60% breaking for Trump, and 30% for Harris. I also think that Megyn Kelly was right when she noted that most independents/undecideds and other fair-minded people would have a real issue w/ all 3 of them ganging up on Trump. In addition to that, her smirking at him several times during the debate when he was stating true things, be it about inflation or Haitian migrants slaughtering cats & dogs. That last claim had not been debunked: the city manager in question just said that there wasn’t proof that it did happen. However, neither was there proof that it didn’t: the accounts of multiple eyewitnesses haven’t been disproven

          Either way, given the questions (and answers) beforehand, or whispering in her ears, it was stacked against Trump, against Americans, and against honesty.

          Glenn Beck had a reporter on his show this week who went to OH and spoke to people on the street about the Haitians and what’s going on.
          As you say, the accounts of them eating pets has not been proven fake. And the haitians are being given apartments where 15 or 20 can rent beds, while lease holders are being moved out as soon as their lease expires; and those renters are limited by law to how many people can occupy a residence. The citizens are now living in tents because they can’t afford the rents.

          So lying hyena gets away with the lies, but perhaps she will still lose. Of course, cheating her way in is still a possibility.

    Who will send Americans money or even help when America needs it?.

    Why send Millions of US$ to a country that defeated America like Afghanistan.

  9. There is ZERO oversite for the money being sent to Ukraine, and after the US sends 10 BILLION, they demand more. What are they spending it on? Ive heard about some of the things the Ukes spend it on, like pensions for govt officials, and dachas on the seashore, but what else? Money laundering for US congress types?

    There arent any good leaders there, and both sides are corrupt. No more US funding!!

  12. Egypt is a Muslim country, within was formed “The Muslim Brotherhood.” Sending large sums of money to any Muslim country is promoting the goals of Islam, to control the world.

    The Biden administration supports jihad terrorism, jihad terrorists, frequently meets with elite members of The Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR in the White House. This isn’t the America I grew up in, supporting the goals of Islam is anti-American, Biden and his administration, including Congress, are betraying every American in this great country.
