In 1927 Bertrand Russell published a pamphlet with the title ‘Why I am not a Christian’. Mr. Ibn Warraq thus stands in a fine tradition and he should be honoured for that, especially given the barbaric consequences attached to apostasy.
Someone I know from real close has gone the opposite way. She told me that her parents kept her away from religion, believing that it should be a personal choice. As a result, she considered herself not religious, until, as she told me frequently, she let her soul meet with Haendel’s Messiah and Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion and St. John’s Passion. She told me this music music moved her deeply and basically was, or at least transmitted, the Holy Ghost, bringing her Christianity in its emotive totality.

In the early 90s, I was becoming increasingly concerned about Islam as an issue….and the West’s obsequious validation of it in our political/educational discourse. I went to my local library one day to check out everything I could on Islam. Back then, I knew nothing of the likes of John Esposito or Karen Armstrong. Every book I checked out was – much to my consternation – rank apologia….with the exception of one: Ibn Warraq’s ‘Why I Am Not a Muslim’. Reading it was not only enlightening, it was re-assuring. At least there was SOMETHING out there that didn’t read like apologia….though I suspect that today, one would be hard pressed to find such a book on a local library’s shelves.
Warraq is a giant in the anti-Jihad movement.
