Were the victims non-Muslims, or a different sect of Islam? Or, were they Black Muslims, as opposed to Caucasian Arab Muslims?

Different sect, probably. Mali’s entire population is muslim – >90%. Or it may have been an internecine sunni attack, for all we know, b/w jihadists and nominally secular muslims

Those that are missing were probably taken to sell as slaves to other Muslims. I read a book about a survivor of an attack where they killed her whole village and some of the women and children were taken as slaves. And Islam never stops it or condemns it. Sickening!
