A Paleo-Arabic inscription on a boulder near an abandoned mosque in Saudi Arabia may have been carved by Ḥanẓalah bin Abī ʿĀmir, a companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, a new study finds.
Although many inscriptions from the early days of Islam are known, their authorship remains unconfirmed, except for one in Saudi Arabia’s al-Bahah region that can be securely attributed to Muhammad’s companion, who later became the governor of Mecca. The inscription, which researchers analyzed in a new study published in the April issue of the Journal of Near Eastern Studies, is only the second confirmed inscription whose attribution connects to Muhammad. Unlike the former text, this one was carved in the early seventh century before Islam came to dominate Arabia, making it an important witness to the pre-Islamic Hijaz (the region where Mecca is located) and the religious background of the Quran’s audience.
However, not everyone is fully convinced about the authors’ identities.
The finding sheds light on the early days of Islam, the researchers said.
“Contrary to the popularly held belief that Islam was born in the full light of history, we don’t know much about the rise of Islam from contemporary sources,” Ahmad Al-Jallad, a professor of Arabic studies at The Ohio State University and the study’s co-author, told Live Science. “That period of time is shrouded in mystery. These inscriptions provide a verifiable foundation for the writing of an evidence-based history of this period.”…

I have a friend he is called Sofian. The translation offered is this.
Wise, – Knowledgeable,- Devoted to God,- Sand,- He who walks quickly.
No wonder Arabic is confusing it can mean, as you like.

The idea that in that era, a bunch of Medinan camel archers rode all the way to Damascus, and then, were still fresh enough to overpower the Damascene defenders, belies any logic. That was centuries before the Hejaz Railway was built. I was curious about what the people of Damascus were really like, that they collapsed so quickly & easily to the Medinans. It turns out that they had a theological dispute w/ Constantinople about the divinity of Christ, or some such
The other thing that struck me was that if they were into conquest, why would they bypass a relatively more fertile area of Palestine to their West, then go to Damascus, and from there, branch out to Jerusalem? Makes no sense. But if the Arab invasions originated in Damascus, that would explain why Damascus was lost to the Byzantines before Jerusalem was, despite being further north of Jerusalem

Very good question! Given that it was a theocracy that dubbed Mecca as its primary holy place, it should have been Mecca where the caliphs should have sat
Also, I don’t believe that the Rashidun caliphs existed: I think it all started w/ the Damascus based Umayyads, who were heterodox/heretical Christians rather than muslims

Someone please state any actual documentation on the history of Mohammed like there is on Jesus Christ who is documented in the archives of time and history. Please note: Koran not a source: sources like actual documents like the one on Jesus. Mecca is not a document.

Jay Smith is one of the few students/scholars of Islamic studies capable and eager to engage in active polemics against dawa-mongers. If what he has compiled and presented is correct there probably was no town called Makkah until something later than the third century ce. Also the Arab conquests likely started from the northern Arabia/Syria area, not the Hijaz.
