0342 – Facilitating Decolonizing Knowledge
Course Description
This two-day module developed and delivered by the Centre for Indigegogy [sic] will focus on the training of teachers and trainers in a sense. This module is a transfer of decolonizing knowledge and works with participants toward teaching folks about how to facilitate decolonizing curriculum, decolonizing education, and decolonial practices. This session is in response to a request from participants of the Decolonizing Education Certificate and sets a foundation for decolonial work.
Participants will be introduced and consider how to teach decolonizing knowledge from a conscious and methodological approach.
Participants will begin to recognize how imperialism, colonialism, capitalism, and racism underpin colonization.
Build an understanding of a systemic and structural approach to colonization toward facilitating decolonizing knowledge.
Participants will be engaged in circle methodology to envision decolonial practices.
Learner Outcomes
East: Consider, reflect and dialogue about facilitating critical conversations about the politics of colonization of Turtle Island.
South: Recognize how to engage methodologically a structural approach to understanding and teaching decolonial practices in educational settings.
West: Build knowledge about generating decolonial spaces of critical learning and consciousness shifting.
North: Envision wholistic practices within spirit, heart, mind, and body.

one thing i hate about post-colonialism is that no one who is into it ever asks or tries to answer a concrete question, such as “Was India ( say) better off or worse off under (say) the British than it is now — judged by criteria such as longevity, freedom, cultural products, poverty etc.?” I’m not dictating an answer to that question , I am pointing out that post-colonialism is pure ideology, not science or scholarship. I suspect that if I raised a question like the above in a post-colonialist class, I would not be answered but be shamed and silenced by everyone in the class, including the “instructor.”

I kinda stumbled across these two CBC articles by accident. Like most Canadians I’ve become very accustomed to hearing CBC Hit Jobs, but this article contained two classics, back-to-back. That’s unusual even for the CBC.

The first targeted the recent EU Elections. They start right out by telling their audience how they should feel about the outcome. The story is introduced by using the word AFTERMATH. I’ve included a definition for that word below.

An experiment on Indigenous Kids ??? WOW, that doesn’t sound good does it ???

The article begins at the 23 minute 42 second mark of the video. It is described as an experiment carried out on Indigenous children. It occurred way back in 2014 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

The offer was made to the families of children at several schools, however most of those who accepted it were Indigenous. OK, so clearly it was kid’s parents who screwed up, when they decided to accept the offer of a trip to Victoria B.C. for one parent and one child.

The article continues with a parent and child recalling the events in 2014.

It describes this as being an experiment performed on the brains of the children. What it actually did is attach electrodes, sensors to the kids heads, to measure various types of electrical activity and ‘play it back’ to them as sound.

As the article continues, we learn that the primary complaint is that at least one of the kids did not like having to remain in a dark room alone for 2 hours per day.

Well into the article it is revealed that a teacher from Prince Albert, who had earlier participated in this treatment, approached the inventor with the suggestion that these kids from Saskatoon might participate. The research team was not looking for participants.

The University of Regina is described as having authorized the experiment. The University disagrees, saying they were only asked to comment on a small portion of the experiment.

OK. Anyone else anticipating a lawsuit yet ??? Why does this sound so familiar?

Nowhere does it state how many kids were involved. Eleven kids, six of who were Natives would meet the description provided by the CBC.

MY OPINION … This experiment sounds really goofy. I would never have enrolled a kid in such a project.

• Is it possible that the parents should have been investigated for child abuse?
• Would the story still have been newsworthy if it involved 21 children, 10 of whom were Native, and 11 European?
