Prominently displayed in the window is this picture of the Nordic anti-Santa Claus known as Krampus.In the legend of Krampus, this devil-like character – with horns, a hooked nose and who is a puppet master. Scholars have noted the similarity between Krampus and medieval antisemitic depictions of Jews who were accused of murdering Christian children.But why would anyone think that this version of Krampus is antisemitic? The third sign in the window — was there any room for even one small carpet to be displayed in that window, given how full it was with political messages? — was about conspiracy theories involving, of course, such “Zionists” as Bill Gates and the Rothschilds, who apparently plan to use vaccines to reduce the global population, though how that would benefit them is entirely unclear. The shop owner is clearly mad. His vaccine conspiracy theories can’t be shut down. Nor can his Palestinian flag be removed from his shop window. But his antisemitic message, with the picture of the evil, hook-nosed, horned devil Krampus, pulling all of us on his puppet-strings, and the store owner’s own semi-literate handwritten message: “THE ZIONISTS OWN’S YOUR GOVERMENT, INSTALL ALL POLITICIANS, CONTROL THE JUSTICE SYSTEM PRINT ALL FIAT CURRENCY, OWN PHARMACY AND MEDICAL! THE MILITARY AND POLICE ARE THEIR LAP DOGS. YOU ARE SHEEP OWNED BY THE ELITES, TO BE DISPOSED OF WHEN YOUR NO LONGER USE FULL” could certainly be prosecuted as hate speech. Go to it, prosecutors in New South Wales. Prosecute Mr. Persian Rug to the full extent of the anti-hate speech law.
And what can you, the ordinary citizens of Katoomba, do? That’s easy: do not, under any circumstances, buy a rug from this man. Spread the word. Drive his business into the ground. Perhaps he’ll decide that it’s time to move back to the Middle East, to whatever hell-hole he came from — Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Iran. Katoomba, and New South Wales, and all of Australia, will be much better off without him.
