Italy: Muslim children exempted from studying Dante because he put Muhammad in hell

No one would dream of calling upon any other group to give up its own cultural, heritage and identity. The way Italy is going, before too long all students will be completely exempt from studying Dante, or anything besides the Qur’an.

An Italian school’s decision to exempt Muslim children from studying Dante because the mediaeval poet placed Mohammed in hell in The Divine Comedy has sparked a backlash and a debate over cancel culture.

Politicians from both the Left and Right said that Dante was a pillar of Italian literature and that it was unacceptable for children to be exempted from studying his writing because of their faith.

The row broke out after a secondary school in Treviso in the north of the country reportedly allowed two Muslim children, aged around 14, to not attend classes in which The Divine Comedy was being studied.

Written at the start of the 14th century, it is an allegorical poem that revolves around a man’s journey to Hell, Purgatory and Paradise, aided by two guides, Virgil and Beatrice.

In the epic work, Dante places the Prophet Mohammed and his cousin Ali in Hell, where they are tortured by sword-wielding demons.

“How is Mohammed mangled! Before me walks Ali weeping, from the chin his face cleft to the forelock,” Dante wrote.

The exemption was criticised by MPs from across the political spectrum.

‘Shameful case of cultural cancellation’
Simona Malpezzi, a senator with the centre-Left opposition Democratic Party, said it was “deeply wrong” to deprive any pupils of the chance to acquire the “deep knowledge of Italian culture that studying Dante brings. Knowing Dante does not take anything away from children’s religious faith and adds a great deal to their knowledge of Italian culture”.

Federico Mollicone, an MP from Brothers of Italy, the party led by prime minister Giorgia Meloni, said: “This is just the latest shameful case of cultural cancellation. An exemption like this not only undermines our national identity but deprives new generations of formative scholastic study.”

  2. Incredible! I’m afraid to ask what aspects of American history or government Muslims are exempt from in the US. An old and naive assumption is that those who have immigrated to the US are attracted by western civilization and specially to our society’s values and culture.

      For Italian schools to forego in my humble opinion the best book (Bible in another category) for enjoyment to have ever been written. I have read it several times and each time I discover something that I overlooked the times before.

          When free speech and open debate is cancelled, societies are setting themselves to decline and become low hanging fruit ready for the picking by people who would bring back slavery.

  7. Dante in his The Divine Comedy by placing Muhammad in hell had done the appropriate thing.

    The reason why this is so is because is a fitting place for that false prophet who started and founded a false religion that leads many sincere people astray and straight to hell.

    • Haha. I remember in 1952 when I was only 9 years old, my father who loved reading Dante, told me that Dante gave such a good description of Muhammad and his satanic religion. That is why when we were expatriated to the Emirates (my husband was in the oil business) in 1980, that I did buy a Qur’an in English to discover what it was all about. Since 44 years now I have been informing myself about Islam objectively, especially glad to read Robert Spencer’s books. Those books unfortunately for the Muslims, tell the truth about that religion because Spencer has researched it properly like many others.

    To make in Italy for the Muslims students exempt to attend studying for Dante. Italy is giving them opportunity in the future for asking to have their own constitution.

    If Muslims do not like the European culture send them back to the country of their parents.

  13. Muslims could complain about several school subjects. Music . Sports for girls, Arts, Science, esp. biology, history (the dark ages before islam mean nothing).And anything that requires independent thinking
    They will not end until education comes down to quran and a little something.

    • Yes, there are problems with muslims in Western schools, especially here in the UK where Music is part of the general curriculum. It’s been reported that they’re known to sit with their fingers in their ears because they can’t get away with bunking off the lessons.

  17. The cure is not to ban Dante Devine Comedy from being taught in Italian elementary schools ,but to ban Moslems from the schools. Ban them from the country problem solved in Rome follow Roman rules and cultural if you can not adapt or at least accept them leave. You might end up being grateful to God for having opened your eyes to the reality of the physical and handicapped Allah and his illiterate and pervert messenger. As part of assimilation (I’m not prescribing complete mental uniformity) into western culture, all students should indeed be required to read Homer, Dante, Milton…If Muslims feel threatened , let us make it plain to students that they are not required to agree with these writings insofar as they have implications about reality.

    • True you could be an atheist ,or a Buddhist ,or a what ever and learn from those book on a cultural level ,you do not have to believe in god or a Christian god to read them with an open mind. Islam demands a mind in lock step with Islam only and the destruction of free though and free will .It is no wonder in Moslem majority countries there is no advancement or invention of anything.   21. Not unprecedented: When I attended school in Germany, there was a weekly “Catholicism” class taught by the local priest. As a non-Catholic, I hung out with all of the muslim Turks in the hallways during that hour.

    What did surprise me is that one of the lessons taught in that class was how wonderful Hitler was (my friends showed me their writing assignments from that lesson).

    • Real a “Catholic” priest telling how great Hitler was openly in a class in Germany in the late 20 or early 21 century tell us another Moslem fair tale .Talking positive of Hitler if you a native German openly in Germany today would get you fired from any job never mind teaching it in any school , except if are Moslem they can love Hitler and hate the Jews openly there.

  22. So science is out, since mo had his own unscientific ideas. History is out because muslims rewrote it (or outright destroyed it) to conform to their violent ideology. Art can’t be taught because a child might accidentally draw one of its forbidden subjects. Why teach other languages, since Arabs are superior by their book? Music might lead a girl to tap her toes, which will require a rape. No gym class because the cloth might slip; again with the rapes. If they can’t work a math problem, they can invent a way to declare it haram.

    There’s no reason to be in a sophisticated western country for any of them. Back to the desert with their all-healing camel urine and back to peace for the rest of us.

    By my book, if Merkel owes an astronomical, unpayable debt to any country, it’s to Italy.
