In Michigan, Leftists Have Started Knocking on Doors in the Middle of the Night

It’s a hallmark of totalitarian regimes. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote about it in his monumental exploration of the nightmare of totalitarianism, “The Gulag Archipelago”: “The sharp nighttime ring or the rude knock at the door. The insolent entrance of the unwiped jackboots of the unsleeping State Security operatives.” The left has now adopted this tactic in the United States, not for arrests (yet), but to frighten its foes into submission.

The Jerusalem Post reported Thursday that “anti-Israel masked men arrived at the homes of University of Michigan Board of Regents members before dawn on Wednesday to protest and demand the adoption of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) policies, according to the university and the regents.” Why before dawn, when the Regents were least likely to be able to carry on a rational discussion about these issues? Because rational discussion is the last thing these masked thugs want. Like those who made nighttime arrests in the old Soviet Union, they want to terrify their targets and catch them off guard.

Intimidation is the stock-in-trade of the ideologues who regard human freedom as the enemy, and so it is no real surprise that anti-Israel thugs have started using the same tactics in Michigan. One of the regents, Jordan Acker, says that it was, to be more precise, “around 4:40 A.M.” when “a masked intruder came to the door of my family’s home with a list of demands, including defunding the police. My three daughters were asleep in their beds, and thankfully unaware of what transpired.”

Acker continued: “This form of protest is not peaceful. Public officials should not be subject to this sort of intimidating conduct, and this behavior is unacceptable from any Michigan community member, especially one led by someone who called for the death of people they disagree with.” He didn’t say whom he was talking about, but there has been a good bit of calling for the death of one’s enemies in Michigan lately.

In the face of the clear threat, Acker was defiant, although he seized the opportunity to affirm his loyalty to the leftist line, irrelevantly invoking 2020 “election deniers”: “I will not be intimidated. In the wake of the 2020 election, public officials here in Michigan were subjected to threats from mobs of election deniers who engaged in similar conduct.”

The leftists went even further at the home of another regent, Sarah Hubbard. She recounted that “at dawn, a group of around thirty protesters came to her home on Wednesday and erected tents, and according to the university, placed fake corpses wrapped in bloodied sheets on her lawn.” Not content with strewing her lawn with trash in an effort to frighten her into doing their bidding, the leftists “used bullhorns, drums, and chants to disrupt the peace of her neighborhood and taped a list of demands to her front door.”

  1. I don’t know what the laws are in Michigan, but if you do that in Texas you’ll likely find yourself being transported to the either hospital or the morgue. The police will be called on you for trespassing.

  2. Thats ‘menacing’ if ever I heard it. But there again its asshole educators reaping the consequences of their prior failures to act. So either grow a pair or stop whining.

  5. Best to always assume that Leftists are not interested in such wonderful things as freedom, true tolerance and a real exchange of ideas. No, Leftists are overgrown children who want their way or they yammer—even at four in the morning.

    But here’s the greater problem as someone like Dennis Prager has noted many times, to wit, standard liberals who are not Leftists nonetheless keep voting for Leftists because, quite foolishly, they think if they do not do so then Nazi types will take over.

    The regular characterization of mainstream conservatives as kooks and proto-Nazis has been going on for a long time now. It occurred here in America with Goldwater, certainly with Reagan, with both Bushes, and even with RINOs like McCain and Romney (e.g., Biden, then Vice-President {not that he could recall when he was but I digress} back in 2012 said of Romney, the Republican nominee for President, that if Romney were elected President “blacks would be put back in chains”).

    Unless one realizes that Leftists do indeed vote for their own values, disgusting and stupid though they are, and conservatives also vote for their own values, but traditional liberals (e.g., Alan Dershowitz) betray their own values by voting for Leftists, then all else will be a muddle, nothing else will get solved, and liberty will remain in great jeopardy. Yes indeed, in our time the weakest link in the effort to preserve the best that mankind has produced is not Leftists, certainly not conservatives, but traditional liberals who remain in lethal slumber mode.

  6. They claim that going to someone’s home, banging on drums, screaming, insulting the homeowner, is protected speech, based on the Constitution’s guarantee. In this too, they are wrong, as being on private property does not apply to that protection.

    Wearing masks so they can’t be identified, gloves so they leave no fingerprints, shows they know they are criminals.
    And the poor kids who have nothing to do with any of it…not to the wars, not to the expelling, or not, of students, find trespassers wearing masks, threatening in loud voices, outside their bedroom windows, have to be terrorized,,, just as the terrorists plan.

      • Probably the difference is KKK did to their enemies, the Michigan leftists do to people on the same side but not left enough.

      • The KKK did indeed do similar things. JoeB was a friend to at least one. Anti-mask laws were written to single out the KKK.

        And Yes! Yes! Yes! to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Mr. Spencer. Some of the greatest works of all time flowed from his pen. My father was a fan and I’m so happy to be one as well.

  7. I’m assuming that members of that board are all leftists, & therefore gun-haters

    Otherwise, if I were a member of that board and one of these thugs came up to me knocking on my door at midnight, I’d have a gun handy, and warn them to either vacate my property, or meet their 72 raisins

  8. Am I supposed to feel sympathy for people who did not do anything about these thugs when they terrorised Jewish students on campus and let them rampage for Hamas?

  11. If someone came knocking on my door at O four thirty in the morning, I would let out my dogs then protect my family and property while evoking my “castle property right”.

  14. oh please do so!! Duke probably would like a midnight snack! I told him, and gave him strict instructions, that he can do as he pleases to anyone who jumps the fence and I will take care of the mess in the morning. He wagged his tail and had one of those dog smiles on his face!!
