I am a Christian; and a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Our family has enjoyed several pets and even helped care for and played with neighbor’s pets, our cousin’s farm horses, dogs, cats, and cattle.
I am also a Registered Nurse; while working night shifts in the Neonatal ICU, a Roman Catholic Chaplain who was called to the ER, would routinely come up to visit the babies and pray over them while standing near the entry doors. He would call the unit secretary or charge nurse for special requests. Usually, we requested help in care for the parents, babies need for surgery, and good health for staff. One night, one of the resident physicians requested prayer for his wife, children, and himself as their family dog (“who was, in many ways our first baby before our daughters came along,”) had died. The priest left a message (I paraphrase):
God gives us so many wonderful gifts in this life; the greatest being His Son, Jesus, the Christ. We are blessed by love, protection, guidance, and correction of family, sharing of happiness and burdens with friends, and the kindness of strangers.
God of creation has given animals a spirit that may help do those things for us as well.
Psalm 33:5 The earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.
Scripture mentions the beauty, strength, and good habits of many animals; but not that they have an eternal soul. They are to be valued and well cared for, but are not the same as human beings.
GOD does promise we will have everything we need in Heaven; and since He gave us such marvelous creatures to help us with our needs on the Earth, perhaps we will have them with us in Eternity.
