The police are reportedly investigating the pro-jihad chants in Ottawa, about which we just reported: “Ottawa police investigating chant on Parliament Hill glorifying Hamas attack,” by Dylan Robertson and Stephanie Taylor, Canadian Press, April 22, 2024:
Ottawa police say they are investigating an allegation of hate speech that has emerged from a weekend protest on Parliament Hill….
The protest featured demonstrators brandishing Palestinian flags and placards calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.…
But the chants on Parliament Hill were not only “glorifying terrorism,” as the Canadian Press described them. They were also advocating for more terrorism:
“Our resistance attacks are proof that we are almost free,” a man can be heard saying in the video from the protest.
“Oct. 7 is proof that we are almost free. Long live Oct. 7, long live the resistance, long live the intifada, long live every form of resistance.”
Canada’s hate speech law — section 319(1) of the Criminal Code — states that:
everyone who, by communicating statements in a public place, incites hatred against any identifiable group where such incitement is likely to lead to a breach of the peace is guilty of an indictable offence punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment, or of a summary conviction offence.
Section 319(2) makes it an offence to communicate, except in private conversation, statements that wilfully promote hatred against an “identifiable group.
Politicians from all along the political spectrum, including Trudeau, condemned the protest as antisemitic and hate speech. The Trudeau-appointed “Islamophobia czar,” however, defended the Parliament Hill protest, with a few objections that make for good optics:

Elghawaby also defended an antisemitic pro-Hamas rally at Mount Sinai hospital in February, which prompted the Toronto Sun to state:
The people who targeted a Jewish hospital in Toronto this week with calls for the death of Jews seem awfully concerned about how people see them.
They have been pushing back against those denouncing them with key help from Justin Trudeau’s appointed representative on Islamophobia and a national media organization.
Canada’s federal envoy for combating antisemitism, Deborah Lyons, stated this regarding the pro-Hamas rally on Parliament Hill:
Societal reluctance to deal with the normalization of antisemitism and glorification of terror allows for words to turn to violence….Why would any peace-loving Canadian chant this phrase?
The chants heard on Parliament Hill go beyond “hate speech.” “We are ‘almost free’” signifies an ambition which encourages further action; while “Long live the intifada, long live every form of resistance” is a chant that promotes and encourages further terrorism in service of the Palestinian revolutionary goal.
Under Canada’s Anti-Terrorism Act:
The offence does not criminalize the glorification or praising of terrorism. It is directed at prohibiting the active encouragement of the commission of terrorism offences and not mere expressions of opinion about the acceptability of terrorism.
Intifada specifically refers to a call by Palestinian revolutionaries for “a violent act of opposition by the Palestinian people to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.” In other words, the violent Palestinian “resistance” to Israel’s existence from the River to the Sea is being supported and promoted on Parliament Hill against an alleged “occupation” of Judea, Samaria and the terror haven known as the Gaza Strip. It is jihad terror plainly expressed.
Given the escalation of pro-Hamas revolutionary activities, how safe are Jews and Zionists in Canada who openly support Israel’s right to exist, as well as its right to Judea and Samaria, and its right to defend itself? The police shouldn’t only be investigating breaches to Canada’s hate speech law, but also possible breaches of the Anti-Terrorism Act as well.
