On the event in question, the real victory that Hindus scored was on December 6th, 1992, when a bunch of them demolished the mosque that stood over the original Ram temple site. I recall that day clearly: I was a student in my first year in the US, and among the Indian student community here, we were divided on that issue. One of my roommates and I were of the same opinion, and the day it happened, he came back to our apartment and excitedly told me the news. I was elated, and debated it fiercely on Usenet, which was the closest thing to social media at that time
A few weeks ago, in January, I watched a YouTube interview (in Hindi) of the guy who led the demolition of the mosque that day. He described how he and his fellow volunteers had been targeted by the secular regime in 1990, and how he watched a number of his new acquaintances die in front of him, as a political stunt by the regime there to show muslims their fealty. He then resolved to demolish the mosque as a tribute to those acquaintances, whose only crime had been to place a saffron flag on one of the domes of the mosque. He described how he put together a team, and how on that day, they went on to demolish the mosque
The backlash that happened to both India vis a vis muslim countries, as well as innocent Hindus living in Pakistan and Bangladesh happened then, not on January 22nd this year. It was then that India found out that ostracizing Israel in order to pander to muslim sensibilities both within and outside India was pretty worthless, and it was then, in 1991, that prime minister Narasimha Rao established diplomatic ties w/ Israel. Today, the Modi regime is again busy pandering to not just muslim, but even jihadist countries like Qatar, Turkey and the PA
On the temple itself, while it being built on the site is welcome, there are a number of irregularities that make it a very underwhelming achievement for Hindus. For one, a lot of the scriptural rules about the inauguration of a temple were violated e.g. it’s not supposed to happen until the temple construction is complete, which this one isn’t. Also, a lot of Hindus had donated gold or silver bricks that they wanted used in the construction of this temple: most got stolen. Another point: the original idol of Lord Rama which had been in the mosque for several years and which was removed before the mosque was demolished in 1992, has disappeared and its whereabouts unknown. Finally, a lot of the rules about who is to inaugurate the temple were violated, and it was turned into a political stunt by the prime minister Modi. All in all, very disappointing
One more thing that was left unaddressed was the issue of the new mosque being built some 16 miles west of Ayodhya. It’s supposed to occupy 5 acres and be the biggest mosque in India. I don’t see anything good happening here: a lot of the traffic in Ayodhya’s new airport & stations will be muslim, and that will once again contribute to islamic encroachments near the new temple, making it ripe for demolition once again once their numbers skyrocket, as it has in several parts of India
I used to watch Jaipur Dialogues until 2 years ago, but they’ve pretty much signaled that their loyalty to the BJP trumps their loyalty to Hindus. So I’ve moved on
I remember the scandal around Islamic efforts to build a mosque at ground zero in New York. Opponents called it a victory mosque and proponents argued it would be a place of peace. YEAH RIGHT! That you for this program.
