France’s Macron Pledges to Fight Antisemitism

Emanuel Macron met with French Jewish leaders on March 18 at the Élysée-Palace, where he pledged to wage uncompromising war on antisemitism. Fine words, no doubt, but that “war on antisemitism ” has been pledged by him before, and by others in his cabinet, such as his Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin. But the antisemitic incidents in France have steadily increased over the last few years, and from October 7 to the end of 2023 have gone up by a horrifying 1000% over the same period in 2022. How he plans to wage this war, what he will now do differently, is entirely unclear. French President Emmanuel Macron pledged an “uncompromising” fight against the antisemitism that has erupted across France since the Oct. 7 Hamas pogrom in Israel in a speech to Jewish leaders on Monday evening.

“Macron was speaking during a ceremony at the Élysée Palace marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of Crif, the umbrella organization representing the Jewish community in France. As well as Crif’s top leadership, several members of the French cabinet were also present, including Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin….

Macron also addressed the recent controversy at the elite Sciences Po university in Paris, where Jewish students claimed they were prevented from entering a lecture hall by pro-Hamas demonstrators. He said that an investigation into the incident had been opened and that “the government will ensure that the republican order is respected.” Last week, Crif issued a call for a parliamentary commission to examine rising antisemitism in French universities….

Will the pro-Hamas demonstrators who blocked Jews from entering a lecture hall be arrested for an act of pure antisemitism that was intended to cause great anxiety, even fear, for the Jews being forcibly kept out? If there were Muslim immigrants in that mob, will they be deported back to their countries of origin, a punishment sure to make many Muslims now living in France and battening on its cornucopia of benefits less eager to engage in such mob bullying?

The words missing from Macron’s speech to his Jewish audience were “Muslims” and “Islam.” Of course he would be understandably diffident about mentioning those words in connection with antisemitism, in public. But at some point, organized French Jewry has to speak the truth to him. Antisemitism in France today is almost entirely being expressed and encouraged and spread by Muslims, and by those young people on campuses who have been seduced by the ghastly “fashion of antisemitism” that they learn from their Muslim classmates.

Today’s antisemites are on the left, opposed to Israel as an “apartheid” and “colonial-settler state,” and defenders of Muslim supremacy, both in France and in “Palestine.” These are not the traditional antisemites of the French far-right, the ideological heirs of Charles Maurras and Maurice Barrès. The French elites have to recognize this unhappy fact — that the French left has been captured by antisemites, including Muslims. For the wellbeing not just of French Jews, but of all French non-Muslims, the government must put in place legislation that puts a complete halt to any further immigration by Muslims. It can claim, truthfully, that experience has shown that Muslim migrants present problems of integration that no other group of migrants does, which justifies such a ban. Furthermore, the government should seek ways to persuade Muslims already in France to leave. One way would be to enact draconian laws about welfare benefits. For example, no migrants would be eligible for any of those benefits during the first five years of their residence in France. They would have to find gainful employment, or if not, accept whatever menial work the government might offer, and stick with it for five years. Those maghrebins who were expecting to live off the French state will be deeply disappointed. Many will return at once to their countries of origin. Another law would require all non-citizens, and even naturalized citizens, who have been convicted of a crime and spent time in prison, be deported after they have completed their sentences, back to where they came from.

Macron distinguished between solidarity with Israel and unconditional agreement with the current government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “Defending and loving Israel, wanting its security, does not mean subscribing to all the choices of a democratic government of the moment,” he declared, adding a call for “a political solution without which there will never be peace and security for Israel.”

First, Macron, like Biden, does not realize that Netanyahu’s determination to continue the fight against Hamas until the terror group has been demolished as a military threat, and his insistence that the IDF must enter Rafah, is shared by the great majority of Israelis.

Second, Macron calls for a “political solution without which there will never be peace and security for Israel” — in other words, he, like so many others, is still in thrall to that so-called “two state solution,” which even left-wing Israelis who once entertained such a notion, after the atrocities committed on October 7, have given up on. They realize that a Palestinian state would be a constant threat — a Gaza on steroids — to the safety of the Jewish state, that no promise of “demilitarization” by the Palestinians would be kept, because their model of treaty-making it that which Muhammad made with the Meccans in 628 A.D., a “truce” that was supposed to last 10 years; after 18 months, when Muhammad felt his forces had become sufficiently strong, he broke the treaty and attacked the Meccans. This has been the model for Muslim treaty-making with non-Muslims ever since. Furthermore, it would be impossible for the Israelis to police all the borders of this new state, and just as Hamas managed to acquire a huge arsenal of weapons in Gaza despite both Israel and Egypt having been determined to keep them out, weapons would flow into this new state of “Palestine” from Jordan, from Syria, from Lebanon, even from Iran.

Macron should be made to understand that there is no “solution” to the Arab war on Israel, that the duty of waging jihad to remove the Israeli “cancer” from the body politic of the Arabs must continue until the Jewish state disappears, and its Jewish inhabitants either expelled or killed, to be replaced by a twenty-third Arab state. Instead of talking about a “solution” to the Arab war on Israel, Macron and other Western leaders should be brought to the realization that what they should seek is a way to “preserve the peace” through deterrence, the same strategy that served the West so well during the Cold War. That only requires one thing: that Israel be assured of having whatever it needs to remain militarily more powerful than those who would destroy it, and that its enemies clearly recognize the IDF’s superiority. That is the only peace that is possible.
