I know how she feels. About the time that Nikki was born in South Carolina I spent the latter part of summers in Mississippi working on my uncles farm. The problem was I spent the early part of summers on Southern California beaches. I already have olive colored skin so those summer days really made my skin darker. I endured all sorts of teasing and even from my own family. My Grandmother called me sugar or just sug but she wasn’t fooling me. I knew that behind my back she and her friends were snickering and saying, brown sugar. The worst name I was called was graham cracker. It was terrible, I never got over it, in spite of the fact that I sought counseling in later years hoping to find some small relief from the torment.
I think I need to go on YouTube and whine about it or maybe set up a go-fund-me thing.

tgusa,
Very sorry that to experience that.
No excuse for that kind of behavior.

Umm – I think tgusa is pulling our legs? Speaking personally, although I’m white, male, and English -(and have therefore already won first prize in the Lottery of Life) – I also have dark colouring and in my teens, had shoulder-length dark curly hair Marc Bolan-style to go with it. (Younger readers are advised to Google early ’70s British Glam Rock band “T.Rex” to get the full effect).
At the age of 19 – not having an uncle with a farm – I was reduced to spending my summer mowing grass for the local council followed by 5 weeks of cruising around Europe – (“cruising” is a relative term – we had a Morris Minor van. Younger readers etc …) – after which I returned home even more impossibly tanned and glamorous than when I left – (assuming such a thing were possible) – and a friend’s female cousins were agog to know who his good-looking Greek – or possibly Iranian – friend was.
Unfortunately, my Mediterranean -(or possibly Middle Eastern) – appearance didn’t work quite so well when I tried to sell my motor-bike to a friend-of-a-friend who commented later that “The fact he looked like an Arab horse-thief didn’t help.”
As you can imagine, the trauma for a temporarily dark-skinned car enthusiast like me of not spending my summers in Southern California in the 1970s, tgusa-style – coupled with the ignominy of being seen in a Morris Minor – was almost too much to bear, and I have been forced to spend my life since seeking compensation in a string of ’50s Americana – ’53 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, ’55 Buick, ’56 Chrysler, ’59 Olds Rocket, ’59 Cadillac Coupe de Ville.
(And if any younger readers don’t know what a ’59 Caddy looks like – then there is no hope for you… LOL)

Phil Copson is right. It was a leg pull, except for the skin tone and summers part. Oh and my grandma did call me sug. People who know me understand I can take it without getting hurt or mad but that is not always true when I begin returning fire because I can tease or insult with the best of them. What can I say, its a gift.
Great story Phil even if you are a lawn mowing, classic car loving, British Glam Rock enthusiast, (Greek) Arab horse thief!
Now I have to go off and have a good cry after reminiscing about the 70s and comparing it to where we are now. What a bummer, man.

Many don’t realize that crying gets rid of toxins via the tears. It also stuffs up the nose in the process.

A good insult/joke at someone else’s expense is something to be treasured:
Personally, I’m a big fan of Nigel Farage, but I loved the comment from an anti-Brexit / pro-immigration commenter who said: “Immigrants do the jobs that British people won’t – such as marrying Nigel Farage!”
(Nigel’s wife at the time – KIrsten Mehr – was German. His current partner – Laure Ferrari – is French.)

Add me to the list of those who have sympathy for your feelings. Those hurts when young are very difficult to shed; oftentimes, they never are shed.
Especially when family members are some of the culprits.
One teacher I had when I was a teen, was very helpful when she found out about some name-calling, insults, etc. Her comment included the important part, “Just ask yourself when they talk about you, ‘What better person could they be talking about?'” It certainly made me feel a lot better.
