A reader in New Hampshire emailed me Saturday and said that in that day’s mail, he had received no fewer than twelve mailings asking for his vote in Tuesday’s primary. He said that wasn’t unusual this close to the big day, but that what struck him about them was that every last one of them was for or against a single candidate. He kindly sent me screenshots of the mailings, and from the looks of the campaign mailings in the first primary state, the Republican contest this year is all about one candidate: Nikki Haley.
This was just one day’s mail, and maybe on the other days this reader’s mailbox was full of pro-Trump or-DeSantis appeals that didn’t mention Haley; after all, all these mailings were prepared before DeSantis dropped out of the race. But they make it clear why DeSantis decided to pack it in: from the looks of these mailings, Tuesday in New Hampshire is apparently a vote for Haley or against her. Eight were pro-Haley and four were pro-Trump, but even the Trump mailings were all about Haley.
Has Nikki Haley suddenly become the Republican frontrunner? In a certain sense, yes: she clearly represents the Mitch McConnell/Kevin McCarthy wing of the party, that is, the establishment Republicans who wish Trump had never come around and hope he’ll go away for good soon. Two of her mailings contain the same warning: “WE CAN’T RISK IT / With President Trump’s criminal trials and the Liberal media’s bias against him, our country can’t risk four more years of Joe Biden.”
While this may appeal to those who love Trump but are worried about his, and America’s, prospects, Haley also reaches out to those who hate him: “Donald Trump can’t defend his fiscal record, so he is lying about Nikki Haley’s,” says one mailing, which features headlines about how Trump increased spending and added to the national debt. The rest of the Haley mailings don’t mention Trump and try to present Haley as a fresh new alternative, although they’re larded with generic rhetoric that can be, and has been, said about every candidate under the sun: “Nikki Haley has a plan to make Washington work for you, not the other way around.” “She will be the new leader Washington so desperately needs.”
In contrast, all four Trump mailings spend as much or more time hitting Haley than they do actually touting Trump. “Nikki Haley & Joe Biden’s Open Borders Put America In Danger,” says one. Another asserts that “Nikki Haley’s Day One Checklist” will include “Cut Social Security & Medicare” and “Raise the Retirement Age to Receive Your Benefits.” Therefore, voters should “Reject Nikki Haley On Jan. 23rd.” Another says that Nikki Haley is “Too Weak and Too Liberal to Fix the Border!” In fact, “Tricky Nikki Is Too Close With COMMUNIST CHINA.”

In her home state of South Carolina, she is running 30-40% points behind Trump. It will be pretty embarrassing for her the day after. The only states where she has a chance are those w/ open primaries, such as California, and states where Trump is being kept out of the ballot – assuming that the courts even uphold them
I think Tucker Carlson is right: the uniparty establishment in DC has given up on Biden, & is trying to stop Trump within the primaries themselves. Only problem they have: the perception that she’s a favorite of that establishment has dragged her numbers down. Before all the dropouts from the party, she was running 4th, even well behind Ramaswamy. If Trump were not the candidate, either DeSantis or Ramaswamy would have trounced her
Her statement about being bullied as a brown girl, when in her election filings for governor, she originally claimed to be White, is pretty laughable, and the desperate last gap of a failed politician

We need a president who is ready, able, adroit and politically able to steward our country back to stability. Trump did well in the face of great adversity. Desantos would be a wise choice for VP as he too shares many of these necessary attributes.

I can truthfully say, I don’t like the idea of this woman making decisions that will affect my family, friends and me.
I’ve gotten a lot of emails from her ‘team.’ I don’t read; I just delete. I’ve heard her; I don’t need to read the stuff.
Politicians lie. They lie to get elected and re-elected. But, she has said some things she intends to do and they sound pretty awful.
She hasn’t promised a chicken in every pot…but she has said stuff about freedom of speech….and it’s not expanding the freedom. If she is “chosen,” she will want the support of Trump and Gov. DeSantis.

According to Fox News Trump is well ahead of Nikki. This from the Boston Post, a newspaper that is in no way a friend of Trump.
“The latest results show that with DeSantis out of the race, the overall dynamic remains virtually unchanged. Trump remains 19 points ahead of Haley — pretty much where he was in recent days. The most recent poll has Trump at 57 percent and Haley at 38 percent.”

Yeah, they know that Trump can’t be stopped by Biden, so they’re trying to head him off by Haley. But she’s hated by too much of the party. If she did somehow become the candidate, most Republicans would sit it out, and Biden would trounce her easily, contrary to all those polls

i don’t think it matters hyperinflation will kill us all and america bc we are in a debt death spiral. You could buy 6 big macs for one hr min wage in 1980 now can’t even get one inflation is so bad now and will continue skyrocking as they print. The money printer goes brrr 2-3 trillion deficits w/o national emergencies. Already debt consuming over 25% of tax receipets will consume 50% within 5-8 years and we go hyper. this is not even getting into social, criminal, issues or crisis of competency DEI has wrought.

Steve, I agree that inflation is a huge issue, but you might want to check your figures on your example.
Most of the time in 1980 I was earning minimum wage (19-year-old college student). Minimum wage was $3.10, and a Big Mac was $2.50. If you were earning minimum wage you could buy a McDonald’s hamburger (maybe not a Big Mac), fries, and drink combo for what it took you to make in an hour.
It would cost $15 to buy six Big Macs. and that would take almost five hours to earn at minimum wage.
Today a Big Mac costs $5.58–minimum wage varies around the country, but federal minimum wage is $7.25. I’m not going to do the math, but that looks about the same in terms of buying power of Big Macs as it was forty-plus years ago. (California, where I live, has a minimum wage of $16.00, so that is a different matter).
Of course, many things have gone up expoentially faster than have Big Macs. I’m not at all sure how I could afford rent now as a minimum wage earner, even with several roommates.
