Erdogan: ‘Our struggle didn’t end with eradicating enemy from our lands and throwing them into the sea from Izmir’

As Uzay Bulut notes in her post on X, Erdogan is referring with pride to the Smyrna massacre of 1922, in which the Greek population of the city and surrounding area, which had been there since the time of Homer and before that, was eradicated. And now he is saying that “struggle” (jihad) is not over, and that Turkey must never face a situation like the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Do the nations neighboring Turkey that were once part of that empire have cause to be concerned about these bellicose remarks? Absolutely.

President and AK Party Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke at the AK Party Izmir District Mayor Candidates Promotion Meeting held at Halkapınar Sports Hall.

President Erdoğan, who started his speech here by wishing “get well soon” to the people of Izmir due to the 5.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred this morning, said: “May God protect our country and our nation from all kinds of accidents, troubles and disasters.” he said….

In his speech, President Erdoğan said, “The Marmara and Aegean regions, including Izmir, are the places where the first seeds, first foundations, and first steps of our thousand-year existence in these lands were taken. These ancient lands, which have hosted many civilizations for thousands of years in the past, have been our homeland for millennia.” “We worked hard and sacrificed a lot to preserve it as such.” he said.

Stating that the War of Independence fought in these lands, which suffered the pain of occupation after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, is a symbol of the will to never face such a disaster again, President Erdoğan continued as follows:

“However, our struggle did not end with eradicating the enemy from our lands and throwing them into the sea from Izmir. The democracy and development moves we initiated after victorious in the War of Independence and establishing our Republic were always blocked in various ways and methods. The lack of insight of single-party fascism further aggravated the cost of this process. The scourge of separatist terrorism, which has been plaguing our country for 40 years, is essentially a part of the attempt to invade these lands and enslave this nation. Likewise, the coup attempts of the FETO treason gang are another face of the same project. Sometimes with the tricks of the tutelage, sometimes with a coup, sometimes with political action. The best years of this country are being wasted with attempts at social chaos and sometimes terrorism.”

Emphasizing that the aim of those who set up this dirty game is to prevent Turkey from becoming a regional and global actor again by hindering its growth, strengthening, development and enrichment, President Erdoğan pointed out that the imperialist powers always find extras, supporters and stooges who will support this insidious game from within.

“Those who played a role in these scenarios, some knowingly and some unknowingly, have received the marks they deserve in front of history and in the conscience of the nation,” said President Erdoğan and continued his speech as follows:

“On the other hand, our nation has placed the memories of its own men who fought for democracy and development, especially the late Menderes, who is a lover of Izmir, in the most precious corner of its heart. The AK Party has undertaken the responsibility of governing the country after such a difficult period. Everyone with reason and conscience should remember that the AK Party period in Turkey It accepts and acknowledges that ‘is the pinnacle of the struggle for democracy and development.”…

    I could really rip into it, but I’m afraid my head would explode.

    Turks are squatters, in Smyrna and all of Anatolia.
    And Erdogan is a snake.

    • Grimly true, GreekEmpress. Turkey will not even acknowledge the Armenian (and Greek and Assyrian and Levantine) Genocide, yet here is Erdogan lauding this murerous savagery. Not uncommon, though.

    • James and Keys, I like to think that Turkey would not be allowed to join NATO now.

      When they joined in 1952, they were considered a bulwark against the Soviet Union–and Turkey was still largely under Kamalism at the time, and so was at least nominally more civilized than today under Erdogan.

  5. That small event in 1922 was just a follow on to the TURKISH slaughter of 2 MILLION Christian ARMENIANS (1915 – 1921)

    • Err-Dog-Ant isn’t even One Tenth of the great leader that Kemal Mustafa Attaturk was.

      • Attaturk understood that Islam was holding back his entire civilization (he said as much, in so many words), and was trying to dismantle it, and get Islam entirely out of power. Did pretty well, for his time. He’s doubtless spinning in his grave at how Turkey has backslid.

        But Islam is the crab bucket religion, that pulls those who try to escape back down into its muck.

        Time to take back Constantinople!

      • Yes, Attaturk wanted to curb Islam. Sadly, though, he had little interest in protecting Turkish Christians and other Infidels. The Armenian Genocide began under the Ottomans, continued under the “Young Turks”–and continued further under Attaturk himself.

        Attaturk was in power when the horrifying destuction of Smyrna took place–and he did nothing to protect its people.

  9. Interestingly “On the Quai at Smyrna” is a short story written by Ernest Hemingway, first published in the 1930 that describes what he saw from a ship’s view that he was on. It opens with

    “The STRANGE thing was, he said, how they screamed every night at midnight. I do not know why they screamed at that time. We were in the harbor and they were all on the pier and at midnight they started screaming. We used to turn the searchlight on them to quiet them. That always did the trick. We’d run the searchlight up and down over them two or three times and they stopped it.”

    Turks were slaughtering the Christian Greeks while the European forces watching on ships did nothing.

    They are also silent on the (lower scale) genocide of Christians in Africa.
    Time to remind us of the genocide of the Armenians by the Sunni Turks and Kurds and the Shi’a Azeri..

    Yes, this is all about the brutal destruction of Smyrna and slaughter of her people, which had a large population of Armenians, Greeks, and other Christians. Apalling savagery–but no surprise from Erdogan. And Smyrnans never threatned the rest of Turkey–in fact, Snyrna was Turkey’s most prosperous city before 1922.

  13. Has Hollywood ever made a movie about the 1922 Smyna debacle? Was this topic ever considered, funded and/or scripted by any studio or Indie? Who has published the best research on this savagery? The best photo source is? The speculation is that much was done for the 100th anniversary but in which language? What about the ships in port: any history on them? Japanese or Yankee? The web eyes should have some great tips!

    • First New England, there was a silent film made in 1919, “Ravished Armenia”. This was made a couple of years before the destruction of Smyrna.

      I want to see this film someday.

      There is also the film “The Promise” from 2016–from what I have heard it rather whitewashes the horror, and features an nice Ottoman official as one of the heroes, but it is good that it was made at all. This is also about the Armenian Genocide in general, and not about Smyrna. This is actually a big name film, starring Christian Bale. Despite its reproted shortcomings, I hope to see this, as well.

      I don’t know if any other films about the Armenian Genocide have been made. I don’t think anyone has ever tackled the destruction of Smyrna. I would love to see a film about Asa Jennings.
