Oakland, California: Cafe staff refuse to let a Jewish woman use their restroom

This took place in Oakland, California, at Farley’s East coffee house at 33 Grand Avenue.

    • I read this report elsewhere and it was confused there too. If she was not allowed to enter the rest room, how does she know it has anti jewsih graffiti therein?

      • She used the bathroom and found the graffiti. She left the bathroom and reported it, and found that staff sanctioned it She tried to return to the bathroom to photograph it and was harrassed and insulted by staff. She insisted and they finally let her re-enter the bathroom, but then when she came back out they told her to leave the cafe.

        Disgusting from staff, but the chain of events is not particularly confusing.

  2. An update….after several employees refused to let the woman back inside the rest room, telling her to go in another, they finally allowed her back in. So she took photos of the writing on the mirror and the baby-changing tray.

    the corp office apologized and had the writing removed. According to what I saw via msn. The three local employees are very much in line with the city council which favors terror…in the form of supporting what hamas did,

      • Yes, it was still a terrible thing to do; I believe the local employees didn’t want the corporate office to find out, but were proudly arrogant that the customer was upset about it. They most likely wrote it.

        • Somehistory, there is no corporate office as such in this case–Farley’s is not Starbucks. There is the original cafe in San Francisco, and the one in Oakland that opened up a decade or so ago. But yes–the owners either didn’t approve of this antisemitism, or at least realized this was bad business. And I imagine that quite a few of Farley’s customers are Jewish–there is quite a large Jewish population here, especially in this neighborhood.

        • g, the article I read said that the “chain” was not behind the graffiti and was investigating it. So, if there is no corporation, then there has to be a main office, or there can be no “chain.”
          I wasn’t quoting word for word…just saying the “update” had someone looking into it.

        They must be closed and either deport them even if they US citizen ship.
        If they are Americans they should be in jail

      • Actually, Oakland had been getting much safer for decades–until BLM riots, mass looting, and the pandemic, when things suddenly took a drastic turn for the worse.

  3. They’ve just helped set the template for businesses to be able to refuse service to anyone on the basis of faith or race. So if I hypothetically owned a business in California, and I declined to allow in muslim customers, nobody would be able to do a thing b’cos I could then point to Farley’s Coffee as the precedent

    Will Gov Newsom have another debate w/ Gov DeSantis? The latter can bring this up as an example of how California resembles the Third Reich

    The Jewish woman should file a discrimination suit against the owners of the café.

    Just appalling.

    The coffee house did apologize finally–but that there were four employees there–pretty much the entire staff at any given time, as this is a small cafe–harassing this Jewish woman is just sickening:

    As the incident began going viral, Farley’s East issued a statement on social media in which it apologized for the incident, characterized the graffiti in the bathroom as “hate speech,” said that it had been removed, that the chain is not antisemitic and that “corrective measures would be taken.”

    Farley’s East is about a mile from my home, and a place I hang out at a lot. I had not seen that cafe-approved antisemitic graffiti, but I don’t use the restroom on every visit. I’ll have to reconsider patronizing them.

    There has been a *lot* of antisemitism and even outright support for genocidal “Palestinian” terrorism here–stuff that goes way beyond naive calls for unilateral (Israeli only) peace or the “two-state solution”.

    So chilling.

      • Thank you, GreekEmpress. The cafe has apologized–a fairly weak apology–and removed the graffiti. I imagine this is the best this lady can hope for.

        I hope they gave the staff a good talking to.

        In contrast, a cafe in Berkeley–the Elmwood Cafe, which I used to frequent–a couple of years ago had an incident where an outdoor table of white women was joined by a huge (6’4″), very scruffy black guy. When he left to go to the bathroom, the young waitress asked the women if they were OK. They assured her that they were.

        Turned out that the black guy in question was W. Kamau Bell, who has a show on CNN, “United Shades of America”. One of the women was his wife; the others their friends. They live in the neighbrhood.

        Well, in most cases this would just cause a moment of embarrassment, but nothing more. Not in this case. After hearing that the waitress has asked his wife if she was OK, he decided that this was completely racist and eventually didn’t just get her fired, but was *able to shut the restaurant down*, despite the owner visiting Bell at his home to apologize, pledging publicly in a community forum to not only retrain his employees about “implicit bias”, but to do some community work around racism.

        When one of the staff–a chef who had nothing to do with the incident–was months later opening Baker & Commons resturant in the same space, Bell tried to *get that* shut down as well, but failed.

        You don’t have to be racist to consider his looks potentially a bit dodgy. By the way, my husband, although he looks very affable, is 6’3″, and if a waitress asked me if I was OK, he would not have been angry at her.

          Typically, I would have also asked if the women were okay.

    • Certainly hasn’t happened yet–and probably won’t. That weak apology from the owners is probably all she is going to get.

      • I saw online that two of the employees have been identified on social media.
        The male is now concerned about his safety. How ironic.

    congestion and carbon emission.

  12. I wonder what would have happened if she were a BLACK women who got refused because of her color?
    I don’t really wonder I know , riots, media and politicians denouncing discrimination, B.L.M raising money.

  17. A small point, but telling–I just read an article about this at the New York Post, which has a close up of the graffitis. One reads:

    Your neutrality is enabling genocide
    Free Palestine!

    Of course, one insane thing about this that there are only three churches surviving in Gaza–the rest have been destroyed not by Israel *but by Muslims*.
