A London council has decided not to allow a chanukiah to be erected outside its town hall to commemorate the full eight days of Chanukah over fears it could inflame tensions between local communities.
Jewish News understands the leader of Havering Council in East London made the “highly sensitive” decision not to allow the installation due to the increase in hate crime in the borough following the 7 October Hamas terror attacks.
Instead, the council has recommended “a temporary installation” along with an “event to celebrate the beginning of Chanukah”….
Local Romford MP Andrew Rosindell had written to Havering Council leader Ray Morgon expressing “grave concern” over any move to halt the Chanukah celebration. In a letter seen by Jewish News, he adds: “Should this be true it would be a grave insult to Jewish communities in Romford.”
A leaked email seen by Jewish News reveals Havering Council, which which has no single party in overall control but is led by Havering Residents Association, admits taking “the difficult decision to pause the planned installation of the Chanukah menorah outside Havering Town Hall this year”.

Sorry to have to correct you here, but we in the UK have NOT ‘always disliked Jews’, so I don’t know where you got that idea from. You obviously don’t know that London’s cockney East Enders came out in force to send the Sir Oswald Moseley packing when he and his Nazi chums came marching round spreading their antisemitic gospel in the 1930’s. Actually, Britain has a long history of disliking Jews. It was remarkable that they let so many Jews in after the 1890’s. But that did not last long. Britain has often, albeit not always, been closed to Jews. In fact, having a Jewish presence was so rare. Disraeli of course was a baptized Jew, and certainly Daniel Deronda has a Jewish connection. But for the most part, the snootiness of British anti-semitism is there, and apparent to those of us who can see beneath the supercilious glance of the upper crust.
Don’t worry. We Jews know our place, and where we of lower social class are not acceptable, not wanted, not invited, and certainly not welcomed when some of us show up.
The remarkable thing about the Kindertransport is that it actually happened.

How very strange! We’ve had loads of Jewish MP’s and loads of Jewish people in our media for years, and I’ve been on this planet and in the UK for nearly 76 years and known more than a few Jewish people at school and elsewhere in east London and up in Leeds (with the largest Jewish community in the UK) and even played the organ for them in a synagogue for a year or two, and haven’t come across anything much of the sort of thing you’re talking about. A very few Brits have had a bit of an ‘us and them’ thing from time to time but that was just innocuous sporadic grumbling and nothing at all like you seem to be talking about. If Christian faith and norms were still the legal tender we would judge based on equality as we are all created in God’s image.
