“Earth passed a feared global warming milestone”
Are you feeling doomed? Good because we’re in double-secret doom territory now. If you scoff, just check out this latest terrifying ‘milestone’ of doom.
Earth passed a feared global warming milestone Friday, at least briefly – Washington Post
Global warming? I thought we switched over to climate change. But climate science is about whatever’s convenient. Now that there’s some warming to discuss, we can go back to calling it global warming. And it really is warming.
The planet marked an ominous milestone Friday: The first day global warmth crossed a threshold, if only briefly, that climate scientists have warned could have calamitous consequences.
Preliminary data show global temperatures averaged more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above a historic norm, from a time before humans started consuming fossil fuels and emitting planet-warming greenhouse gases.
Ominous milestones are my favorite kind.
This is a big deal in warmunist circles. A number of the UN agreements are built around keeping temperatures down to this hypothetical number above “pre-industrial levels.”
But wait a minute, you may ask, if you’re not a mindless zombie, what does that even mean?
The industrial revolution began around the time of the American Revolution, but when warmunists use ‘pre-industrial’, they mean 1850-1900.
Why? Because they randomly make stuff up. Also, it avoids acknowledging that we didn’t remotely have reliable temperature records in the 1780s. Until the 1880s there was limited temperature data outside the Western world.
But how reliable are our temperature records even from 1880 compared to today? They don’t just have to be reliable, but reliable enough that we can finely compare our current high-end measurements and keep our temperatures to 1.5 c above theirs.
In the real world, much of that data is absolutely not reliable and we may not even be measuring the same things.
Temperature data from hundreds of years ago is no easier to process if it’s been obtained at sea. In 2004, for example, a team of researchers analyzing data from 18th- and 19th-century ships’ logs had to correct for the fact that in those days, sea-surface temperatures were measured with a thermometer in a bucket of seawater.
Thermometer enclosures, which shield the temperature sensor from direct sunlight and other sources of radiation, can be wooden or plastic; the variation in materials can, in turn, introduce discrepancies in the results (which some stations in the U.S. discovered firsthand in the 1980s when they switched from traditional enclosures to electronic screens). The instruments are also sensitive to their surroundings: If you measure the temperature on a sunny day versus a cloudy day, direct sunlight on the thermometer will record a higher temperature, even if the two days are equally warm.
But I’m sure we can certainly be certain of that 1 c degree mark from the “pre-industrial era.”

“making stuff up” is what they do best
We are all supposed to quake in our shoes or winter boots because they declare their “stuff” as fact

“we didn’t remotely have reliable temperature records in the 1780s“
No kidding. The idea that we did is the first clue. There’ve been fascinating posts that show scorching red heat maps from the last couple of years next to scorching red heat maps of decades ago where red meant far higher temperatures then than now. I’ve read that they move to derivative measures when even these faulty supposed absolutes won’t lie for them and that they locate sensors according to where they can get abnormally high readings. Finally, compare 1930s heat maps to more recent ones.

Do you not know yet the green new scam is to force everyone into 15 min cities ,have electric cars that they can only charge once a week because the grid is not up to it. To lower the average person standard of living in the first world. The people in the third world will die off from lack of food , fuel ,heat, and all the things fossil fuel made possible .I am sure many of best and brightest members of congress ,the Senate ,and many local elected officials have money invested in these highly subsidized green new deal companies that would go bankrupt without the taxpayers picking up most of the tab. Have everyone running around that represent you in government shouting the sky is falling as they empty your wallet into theirs. Have control of how far you can travel, who you can visit what you can buy all in the name of saving the world ,what you can say on the internet ,and social credit score like China. The China flu was the test run for this non-sense in 2020.

Like Mark Levin asks, what is the perfect temperature, humidity, pressure & all of that? Maybe if one day we could make it 70℉ worldwide, 1 atmosphere, have it rain in all the deserts, partially dry up the Amazon & so on, Gaia would have attained equilibrium?

Regardless of the existence, or lack thereof, of credible temperature data from the distant past there is absolutely no doubt that there is a significant warming trend in certain areas of the World. If we look at nothing else, the vanishing glaciers, the shrinking ice caps at both pole and Greenland are clear evidence of that. The effects, both long and short term, can be severe, obviously.
How much of that is caused by mankind’s activities and, if it is significant, what can we do about it. These are the questions to address.
Wellington says
Wrong. The data is being very selectively chosen and any evidence contradicting this is being ignored. For example, we were told years ago that by now there would be no ice at the North Pole and yet there is a great deal of ice at the North Pole presently. This reality has prompted the man-made global warming crowd to asset that, well yes, there is still ice at the North Pole but it is very thin. No it is not. It is thicker than it was in 2007 and as thick as it was in 1958.
You have been snookered again, Rarely.
Rarely says
Wellington.
Clearly the ice caps at both poles and on Greenland are shrinking.as are many glaciers.
I don’t care about their measurements.
Where do you get the idea that they are actually thickening?
Wellington says
Clearly? What proof do you offer? Government web sites? MSM web sites? The same web sites that told us the 2016 Trump campaign colluded with Russia? That the Hunter Biden laptop story was Russian disinformation?
Try going to a site like Climate Depot, Rarely. And know well that it is as excoriated by the MSM and other bogus entities as much as Jihad Watch is.
Read a description of Robert Spencer and Jihad Watch at a site like Wikipedia to sustain my overall point and that is that we are now fed all kinds of lies posing as truth. Spencer and JW are regularly dismissed as conspiracy sites by the very powers that be that are pushing the crap about man-made climate change. Think there is a connection? Hope you do.
Wise up, Rarely. That is if you can and realize that so much of what you are told is factual is anything but. As usual, and never more so than in our age, the truth is elusive but it can be found out nine times out of ten if one is diligent enough. Try being diligent. Don’t be a sucker. After all, so many are nowadays.
Rarely says
Wellington.
Once again – where did you get the information that the North Pole ice cap is actually thickening?
I am as skeptical as anyone about the global warming data but my mind is not closed to obvious evidence. How much is hype, how much is outright lying and how much is actual truth is blurred by closed minds. Let us stick to what we actually know.
Wellington says
Here is a link, Rarely, for Arctic ice not thinning but actually the opposite:

DONALD CRAMER says
I was in Alaska this fall and the Mendenhall is still shrinking, but other glaciers are growing. So don’t take one value and make it an average. In the 1960’s Time magazine reported we were moving into a new Ice Age, but it never happened. Gore embezzled how much money saying that the glacial melt down would make our East and West Coast disappear by 2020. Well there’s nothing to show for the flooding or Gore’s whereabouts. Nice vanishing trick Al.

Wellington, Rarely is a fellow Canadian, geeez that is hard to admit, he lives in sunny ways land. Last week the Canadian Environment Minister, Steven Guillbeault, a self professed activist, stood in the House of Commons and stated he is a Liberal and a proud Socialist. I hope that helps you to understand the reasoning of some of his little followers.
Remember “acid rain”, I swear it had an impact on some peoplekind’s brain.
Wellington says
Thanks for your comment, E T. The entire acid rain nonsense was just another example of environmental hysteria. Turned out it wasn’t due to factory outputs but rather to ph levels in lake beds changing naturally over thousands of years and when that happens and waters become more acidic it kills off lots of aquatic life.
Yes, yet another environmental emergency supposedly caused by man though it wasn’t caused by man but by nature, which is so often horribly indifferent to life and something of a jerk. But think the environmental zealots will ever apologize for any of this? No way. Such rubes just move onto the next environmental scare caused by that nasty species, i.e., Homo sapiens, that inhabits pure, wonderful, perfect Earth.
Oh yeah, same old, same old paradigm—nature good, civilization (and especially Western Civilization) bad. You’d think these environmental rubes would learn. But they won’t.
Hoi Polloi says
The glacier issues are reversion to the mean. We have an insignificant and not necessarily attributable to industrial activity increased temperature level over a century of weather. If we are discussing temperature, accurate measurements of temperature are of paramount importance. Particularly so when the proposed solutions are based on claims that are so poorly designed and analyzed.
Wellington says
Climate zealotry, for which no hard scientific evidence exists, is a substitute religion. Judith Curry, former head of Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech, recently compared it to the tulip mania in The Netherlands in the 17th century. She also pointed out that if one is a scientist and disagrees with anthropogenic global warming one can forget about getting any funding, something that Roy Spencer, who teaches in the University of Alabama system and who received his PhD in meteorology from the University of Wisconsin, has also has noted. Spencer, btw, is author of the work, The Great Global Warming Blunder.
The entire climate rot is evidence of an even larger phenomenon and that is that the West is presently overwhelmingly led by fools, control-freaks and idiots. Sanitizing Islam is another example of this self-destructive nonsense.
somehistory says
Wellington, I like reading articles on archeology The guys and girls often find things that prove the earth’s temperature, rainfall, drought, etc. has fluctuated over the centuries. Often, they find interesting artifacts under the polar and high mountain ice, which ice was not there at some time in the distant past, and which some say is now melting faster than biden’s favorite ice cream.
As you have made clear numerous times, “fools, control freaks, and idiots” abound.

Well, we killed off millions of Buffalo and their methane farts which, according to MIT, are 100 times more potent in trapping heat than CO2. Where are the carbon credits for that? I would bet if Buffalo still roamed the plains the greenies would suggest offing them like they are currently demanding for the EU bovines.
The Lefties are rejecting lab meat and have stopped buying those expensive flame throwing battery cars that don’t live up to mileage promises. And here in the West of the West (rhymes with best of the best) “we ain’t buyun’ that lightn’ truck that can’t pull muh horse trailer up a mountin’ pass without demandun’ a lunch of ready kilowatt.”
Yeah, electric vehicles have plateaued. ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicle sales are up. We don’t want expensive electric heat and the power companies can’t deliver enough for all electric homes and cars. You can have our gas furnace, clothes dryer, stove, and water heater when we can’t fix them anymore – which is after our lifetime, wresting them from our “cold ………” We are so ready for the incompetent leftist government to be gone by 2025.
We don’t know enough to accurately determine if humanity has actually caused climate change. It could be a natural process we neither understand or can stop. The ocean is not sweeping inland today or in 10 years as Obama’s oceanside property can attest. The fervent “panic” mode we see from youth about climate are athiests abandoning nihilism for a new religion of saving the planet – with or without you. Notice a familiar Islamic theme? Do they really think China cares?
As my New Zealand friends say, “She’s right Jake”. Others may echo Mose Allison – “Well I don’t worry bout a thing ‘Cause I know nothing’s gonna be alright”
