The Biden administration has now agreed to allow $6 billion held by South Korean banks to be “freed up” for transfer to Iran. In return, the Bidenites will get back five Iranian-American hostages. The Bidenites will also free five Iranian prisoners. The Bidenites claim that the $6 billion will be deposited in special “restricted accounts” and can only be used for “humanitarian” purposes. We’ll see about that. Republicans in the US House and Senate slammed the Biden administration for the substance and the timing of a $6 billion prisoner swap deal with Iran announced on Monday, the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), a fierce critic of the Biden administration’s policy toward Iran, decried the agreement as “shameless,” noting that US President Joe Biden had used the same anniversary as his deadline for withdrawing all American soldiers from Afghanistan in 2021.
“First Joe Biden used 9/11 as an excuse to flee Afghanistan. Now he desecrates this day by paying ransom to the world’s worst state sponsor of terrorism. Shameful,” Cotton wrote on Twitter….
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), meanwhile, noted that Monday’s announcement came as Biden commemorated the Sept. 11 anniversary from a US airbase in Alaska, asking, “What the hell are they thinking?”…
Both Senator Cotton and Congressman Lawler were infuriated not only by the agreement the Bidenites had made with Iran, but with the timing of the announcement, on September 11, which was hardly the proper time for announcing a deal that will strengthen the “foremost state sponsor of terrorism.”
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said the $6 billion will be transferred to “restricted accounts” where the funds will be available to the regime only for humanitarian trade and not terrorism.
“Restricted accounts”? Don’t you believe it. It’s a comforting fiction for the Bidenites, but it’s nonsense. Money is fungible. Even if every dollar of those $6 billion in those “restricted accounts” is spent on medicines, or food, all that does is free up another $6 billion elsewhere that was to be spent on medicine and food but can now be spent on drones, uranium, and rockets.
The Biden administration has also insisted that the prisoner negotiations with Iran are a separate track from negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program, but Republicans have questioned whether an “understanding” or other informal agreement has been reached over Iran’s nuclear enrichment.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), for example, accused the administration of having already made a deal over Iran’s nuclear program without informing Congress.
“President Biden has established a secret nuclear deal with the Iranian regime that is being kept from Congress and the American people,” Cruz said in a statement about the prisoner deal. “The Biden administration must keep their deal secret because if they disclosed it, the law requires them to come to Congress and defend it, and this appeasement is utterly indefensible. Instead they will continue lying about their policies until Congress forces them to do otherwise.”
The fear expressed by Senator Cruz is that the Bidenites, who know full well that if they make a deal with Iran over its nuclear project they must bring it before Congress for its review and approval, will not do so, but will continue to deny such a tentative agreement has been reached until Congress forces the Bidenites to appear.
In June, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, wrote a letter alerting the Biden administration that even an informal agreement or understanding with Iran would have to be reviewed by Congress under the Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015 (INARA)….
McCaul is correct. The Bidenites are required by law — the Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015 — to bring any agreement with Iran on a nuclear deal to Congress for its review and approval. And this they give no signs of doing.
The Republicans, who control the House, should hold meetings now on this $6 billion deal. They need to focus on two things.
First, in addition to the $6 billion that the Iranian government will be pocketing, five Iranians held in American jails will be freed and returned to Iran. Why were the Bidenites unable to negotiate a deal trading five Iranian prisoners for five American prisoners? Why, in other words, were they such miserable negotiators that they also were compelled to provide Iran in addition with $6 billion? Does anyone think this is a good deal? It reminds me of the nightmare exchange that Israel, to its great shame, agreed to in 2011, letting 1,027 Palestinians — most of them imprisoned for terrorist murders or attempted murders — go free in exchange for the return of a single Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, who had been kidnapped by Hamas. Among those 1,027 freed Palestinians, many returned to terrorism and were responsible for killing dozens of Israelis. That deal should never have been made. Nor should this $6 billion deal with Iran satisfy the American public.
Second, they need to summon Blinken and other high-ranking Bidenites to come before Congress to explain just how it is that they think those $6 billion placed in “restricted accounts” will not have any effect on the amount of money Iran can now spend on weapons and weapons development. How, the Republicans should ask, can you prevent the money that is spent from those “restricted accounts” on medicine and food from then freeing up another $6 billion elsewhere that no longer will have to be spent on “humanitarian” needs? Let the American people see Antony Blinken and Jake Sullivan stumble all over themselves trying to explain why this huge sum is not fungible, why there is no chance that Iran will now have any more money to spend on its nefarious military projects. It should be quite a spectacle.
