“‘Allah is great’: an individual tags inscriptions in Arabic on a town hall while reciting the Koran in Essonne,” translated from ““Allah est grand” : un individu tague des inscriptions en arabe sur une mairie en récitant le Coran dans l’Essonne,” Valeurs Actuelles, September 4, 2023 at 4:35 p.m. Updated on September 5, 2023 (thanks to Medforth):
On Sunday September 3, a couple went to the Athis-Mons police station to report the presence of tags in Arabic on the wall of the administrative center of the town hall and the amphitheater, Valuers Actuelles learned from a source. The couple said that on Friday, September 1 around 8 p.m., they had happened upon the person who had put up the graffiti.
Being both of Tunisian origin, they managed to translate what was written there, namely “Allah is great,” according to them. They said they also heard the individual repeatedly recite verses from the Quran while looking at his tag. The couple filmed the scene, without thinking to call the police.
But then the next day, Saturday, September 2, while passing by the administrative center, the couple noticed the presence of new tags, which they translated as follows: “God will restore order. It is to God that we will return.” Worried about this discovery and fearing that the individual was potentially dangerous, they reported the facts to the Athis-Mons police station.
The duty judicial police officer and the scientific police then went to the scene to ascertain the facts. They discovered the tags in the place indicated by the couple, as well as on the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen present on the wall of the administrative center.
The agents requested the requisitions of the surveillance video images recorded by the cameras present at the level of the town hall in order to find the author or authors of these inscriptions. Photos of the individual taken from the video submitted by the couple were released locally. The departmental territorial intelligence service has been notified. “In these kinds of incidents, it is always difficult to identify the perpetrator or perpetrators,” explains a police source.
Contacted by Valuers Actuelles, the town hall indicates that “in view of the seriousness of the acts, the City filed a complaint on Sunday, September 3.” The cleaning is in progress, explains the municipality.
