Canada has now released its first national training program in medical assistance in dying for licensed physicians and nurse practitioners. The suicide training curriculum is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
In Canada, an individual does not need to have a fatal, terminal condition to be eligible for what is warmly called MAiD, the clever abbreviation for Medical Assistance in Dying. According to Health Canada: The Trudeau government “committed to supporting individuals who meet the eligibility criteria to have their MAiD request considered in a fair, safe and consistent manner, while supporting efforts to protect those who may be vulnerable, including persons who suffer from a mental illness.”
How many Canadians trust the Trudeau government to be “fair, safe and consistent,” and supportive of the most vulnerable, as it promises to do in the MAiD program? Trudeau promised in 2019: “A re-elected Liberal government will make sure every Canadian has access to a family doctor, to mental health services, to affordable prescription drugs and to national pharmacare,” and “to boost health care funding by $6 billion over the coming four years.” As expected, the big spender Trudeau lied. But there’s one area to which he has proven to be dedicated: his government’s assisted suicide program.
According to official Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, “some people are suffering from mental health disorders because of the government’s policies.”
After eight years of Justin Trudeau, everything feels broken and people feel broken. That’s why many are suffering from depression and they’re losing hope.
Conservative MP Ed Fast added that “it is deeply concerning that this government appears to be moving from a culture of life to a culture of death.”
In 2019, Trudeau announced his intention to “bring in legislation to expand access to medical assistance in dying” and commissioned “expert panels” to investigate “other areas of assisted death, including advance requests and extending the right to mature minors and people with severe psychiatric disorders.” In case you might be wondering what a “mature minor” means, it refers to a child who is deemed by a healthcare provider to be mature enough to give consent to his or her death. So MAiD-participating healthcare providers are afforded the powers of the state to decide whether to give their stamp of approval to this decision, with no sufficient oversight possible. Canadians must simply trust in their opinions in a way that is very different from healing and the pledge to “do no harm.”
The Conservatives are now working to repeal the MAiD law. In the face of opposition:
On February 2, 2023, the federal government announced plans to delay MAiD eligibility for people whose sole medical condition is mental illness until March 17, 2024. This is a one year delay from the original timeline. They said that this delay will provide them with more time to develop practice standards and training, and to allow for better data collection and sharing.
Bear in mind that mental health is a legal factor in weighing the ability of an individual to participate in court proceedings. That’s because the individual may not be reliable, due to the instability caused by mental illness. When one applies this reasoning to MAiD accessibility, how can a mentally and psychologically sound decision be made by a deeply distressed mentally ill individual?
Society lacks resources to care for the suffering. Given the financial and emotional demands in Western societies, devoted caregivers are in scarce supply, so the state has moved in with a solution to end their lives, rather than create more humane ways to care for them. Meanwhile, the Trudeau government’s waste is profuse and record breaking. No other government in Canadian history has seen such reckless spending. Then there is Trudeau’s unethical spending. Add in Trudeau’s suicidal immigration policies (no pun intended), and all this is breaking the backs of taxpayers in a severely broken system that he created.
Trudeau’s solution to help those in need is to offer services to end their miserable lives legally, in their deepest moment of despair. He continues to make headway. In February, a parliamentary committee recommended in a report tabled in the House of Commons that medical assistance in dying “should be expanded to include minors” with a restriction attached. The child’s natural death must be “reasonably foreseeable.” Last year, the Trudeau government even funded an assisted suicide activity book for kids: The Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) Activity Book.
What about medical practitioners who are opposed to participating in any part of the MAiD process on religious grounds, or simply as a matter of conscience? According to the website Dying With Dignity, the practitioner is allowed to decline. However, this isn’t straightforward. They cannot simply decline and then leave the matter up to the patient to pursue. In Ontario, “objecting providers must make an ‘effective referral to a non-objecting, available, and accessible physician, nurse practitioner or agency.’” So while a practitioner may be unwilling to participate, he or she is bound to do so by making a referral. This is reminiscent of a section in the criminal code that prohibits counseling someone to commit suicide. It states:
241 (1) Everyone is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than 14 years who, whether suicide ensues or not,
(a) counsels a person to die by suicide or abets a person in dying by suicide; or
(b) aids a person to die by suicide.
To some health practitioners, forcing them to “make an effective referral” would be regarded as a morally egregious offense that would be no different from counseling someone to commit suicide. Such a requirement violates a practitioner’s right to exercise his or her moral conscience and religious freedom.
The moral decay in Canada and woeful disregard for human and religious rights across the board is becoming increasingly evident and severe. Take, for instance, the “rights” afforded by the state to a child to make life-altering decisions about gender at a turbulent time in life. A National Post article, Some parents object as Canadian schools quietly aid students’ gender transition, revealed that school boards “are urging schools to both automatically honor request to change a student’s name and pronouns, and not to tell parents if requested.”
The Trudeau government’s MAiD program is presented as kind and caring, as is “gender affirming care.” Many, in their moments of pain, will trust their government to be “fair, safe and consistent,” as the government promises. Yet ironically, if a poll were taken on how many Canadians actually trust the Trudeau government, the results will be dismal for Trudeau.
Blougeoisie says
Will trans kids be allowed to request this service if unhappy with transitioning? Is this a tacit admission that trans is a mental health issue?
VMS says
Very steep, slippery slope!!! It’s not a long stretch to go from this to concentration camps to weed out the unfit (or the troublemaker).
Fitna says
Ofc what’s not mentioned at all in this article is that Christians (and religious people in general) completely oppose Euthanasia/MAiD and suicide.
Why? Because they think a magic invisible man in the sky disapproves or disallows it because it’s written in a Bronze age book of myths and fairy tales. Same dumb logic they use for Abortion.
But here’s the kicker, Christians don’t believe their retarded so-called “morality” is only meant for them…nooo, they want to stop everyone else from getting access to safe abortions, euthanasia, gender transitions and so on, because through their sheer arrogance, they think they know better than non-believers.
This has nothing to do with the health of an individual or to do what’s best for them, but to impose religious fanaticism on the rest of society.
This would be like Muslims taking over the state and forcing all girls/women to get FGM, or banning science books because they conflict with the primitive nonsense contained in their holy books.
What we really need is strong laws to make sure religious moonbats are prevented from interfering with a secular state and to keep their nonsense to themselves…or maybe simply finding ways to ban religion altogether.
The reason such policies exist like Euthanasia and Abortion is because they are needed. But the religious don’t care about reasons….or this issue would’ve been settled already. This is all about bullying non-believers.
Aren’t we lucky we don’t live in a Theocratic state? If it was up to Christians, we’d still be using leeches and calling the mentally ill demon-possessed, burning so-called witches/heretics at the stake. Certainly some religious loons in the US are trying to bring back those ‘good old days.’
Fitna says
I realize there are good, moderate Christians who believe in live and let live, so ofc I’m not referring to them. Just the radical type who want to force religion onto non-believers.
Also fwiw, for those who care to know ‘reasons’ and why Euthanasia is needed. The answer is pretty simple, we all know there are situations in life where death is the better, more peaceful option.
Terminal illness can cause great suffering to people and ofc it’s terminal, they aren’t getting better…so giving them a fast, painless death is not only common sense but should be mandatory. We don’t think twice about putting down our pets who are dying and in pain, why is there even a debate here?
As for the mentally ill, for some it is a lifelong illness because it is genetic. Drugs don’t work or maybe they reduce some suffering. It is not the height of arrogance to tell sufferers, you’re not in as much pain as you claim, by those who don’t suffer from this illness?
In cases where it’s ‘temporary’ the illness is a result of the conditions one lives in. If you live in a cushy mansion, who are you to tell broke people they should keep living because their life might improve? We live in a Capitalist society…those who can’t work are left homeless…and social programs have been gutted so they have no help. This is no life, this is a slow, torturous form of dying.
As for minors…once again, only they know their own suffering best…some suffer through horrendous physical, mental, sexual abuse. Sometimes there is nobody there to care for them. Who is anyone to tell them you must keep suffering because my religion tells me to force you?
Transgender people have the highest rate of suicide, around 6 times higher than the norm from what I recall. So you’d think Christians would be happy that the group they hate the most will end their own lives…but they’re against that too. So you want them to keep living so that some evil bigot kills them one day?
There’s absolutely no sensible logic in the Christian mind. That’s what happens when you fill children’s heads with lies and primitive stone age nonsense. They become insane adults trying to wreck a system that works well…just like the Muslims.

Couldn’t have been stated better than from a Trudeau Liberal apologist; try reading Christine’s article again, only this time don’t use your anti-religious hatred, including ignorance of Muslims, to detract from the real issues she raises; in any case it’s not religious fanaticism that’s being imposed upon the world but rather the tyrannical pursuit of hatred toward the sovereignty and dignity of all human beings ,regardless of personal belief; unfortunately for you you may think you are on the enlightened side, but are, in fact, totally expendable!
Fitna says
More infantile insults, you do realize ad hominems are not actual arguments right? They’re fallacies.
Instead of telling me to read the original article, how about you actually read my response to her article and then show me exactly what I got wrong? I thought you knew what subtlety/nuance meant…every sentence you post shows you’re clueless and an intellectual lightweight.
Hahaha pulling the old “anti-religious hate” card when someone points out the fact that religions have centuries and millennia of evil behavior behind them. You don’t get off the hook so easily.
“Ignore of Muslims” umm wtf are you talking about? Speaking of ignorance, do you even realize that more than 300 million females have had FGM performed on them by Muslims?
So religious maniacs that block people from getting Abortions and Euthanasia and creating laws to prevent it and tearing down Roe v Wade isn’t religious fanaticism? No when Christians/Muslims are being azzholes to unbelievers, it’s just normal behavior…what a nutter you are.
” the tyrannical pursuit of hatred toward the sovereignty and dignity of all human beings”
Do you even know what you’re babbling about in this statement? You are inverting reality. If you remove Euthanasia, then you force people to have undignified deaths, through DIY suicides, like jumping off buildings, drowning, shooting themselves in the head, etc.
A dignified passing would be to give them the medications that one needs to ensure a safe, painless and fast death and not leaving a terrible mess behind like a gunshot wound would do for example.
And restoring a humans ‘sovereignty’ would be to give them a choice of having access to Euthansia if they want it, which is what we Secularists advocate for…religious lunatics like you want to remove that choice.
Yet again religious freaks are always behind the times and on the wrong side of history. You were all wrong about Evolution, Geocentricism, and so many other issues that the Catholic church at least apologized for and recanted their positions on.
I guess we just have to wait for another few centuries till you troglodytes holding humanity back catch up with the rest of us and yes are we are far more enlightened than you and your ancient fairytale mythology book.
As for expendability, you’re confusing religious throwbacks like yourself who, as I just explained, offer nothing of value and hold humanity back. It’s rational, reasoned thinkers like me that help move society forward. You just can’t see it since you’re just a low-IQ peon.

In the 1970’s I wrote a paper on what I called mercy killing. I went into it fully believing it was merciful but by the time I was half way into my research, I changed my mind. It was crystal clear that it was already being abused in some countries. My conclusion was and remains, it is wrong to normalize euthenasia.

Most recently (this year) I watched two friends die horrendous deaths from cancer. Their excruciating agony lasted for weeks while they pled with authorities. They had both applied to the MAiD program. It is easy to denounce assisted suicide in cases such as these by using all sorts of outrageous examples that never have and never would occur if you have never witnessed such clear situations. It has much more to do with alleviating pain than to preserve dignity.
Whether assisted suicide should be allowed in other situations such as severe emotional or mental distress is something I cannot abide. I believe that there is always something better to do than die.
Although I do not like abortion on demand (i.e. as an alternate method of birth control) I accept that it is a necessary option in cases of rape and incest. That being said, abortion on demand is likely preferable to the damage caused by it being too restrictive. It’s a very difficult line to draw but I agree with Fitna to the extent that religious conviction is irrelevant to the discussion…or, at least, should be.
Whatever the law may be there will always be abuses which, when exposed, should be prosecuted but one should be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water.
Fitna says
Thanks Rarely,
I think people who hold a similar position to yourself simply don’t make the logical leap from the seen and unseen.
Someone dying of cancer gives very clear indications that they are in severe pain and are needlessly suffering…ofc as we know they’ll eventually die anyways (in incurable situations).
However mental illness is not as readily visible. You can see a person is sad/depressed, maybe even experiences migraine headaches…but suffering is still suffering.
Why grant the gift of (death) a release from a life of torturous pain to one person and not another just because you can see the physical signs? Why is suffering even taken into account at all?
What do you mean there is something “better to do than die?” Don’t you think it’s rather obnoxious and haughty to tell others you have the right to do and you don’t? And who are you, or anyone else to pass judgment on others, thinking you know better than them?
I think you’re halfway there to my state of thinking, you just haven’t thought it through.
What is a human anyways? To a child, a father can be a hero…but if that father is a terrorist, then to others he’s a killer that needs to be put down. People can have intrinsic value, or they can be nothing more than a bag of meat imo, depending on the context.
Glad we agree on religion staying out of issues like this. Unfortunately they just puts artificial blinders on people and prevents them from thinking.
If Christians placed value on human suffering and made judgments based on compassion/rationality rather than blindly following the scribblings of goat-herders from 2000 years ago-which they foolishly believe comes from a Creator, which doesn’t exist, they’d be making wiser decisions and wouldn’t be at odds with the rest of civilized society.
Fitna says
correction:
you have the right to die (one person)…and you don’t….(another in a different situation)
“And who are you, or anyone else to pass judgment…”
(you-in the abstract, not you personally…)
Fitna says
Violet, how was euthanasia being ‘abused’? Here in Canada (as I recall) you need the approval of two doctors before they give it to you and there’s a waiting period.
They have steps in place to make sure those people who want to die have their wishes respected and at the same time aren’t pushed into this decision.
You say it’s wrong to legalize MAiD, but you fail to explain exactly what is wrong with it.
What do we mean when we say something is “wrong”? Do you mean it causes more harm than good? Or is it ethically? Or does it go against your religion. Like if you believe a unicorn lives in your shoes and the unicorn disapproves of it…that’s the case with Christians are other religions.
In which case, such people are simply insane and they don’t belong at the adult table to make life/death decisions for non-believers. Have your beliefs, but don’t try to push them on the rest of us.
Most adults should have the basic common sense to know there are times where death is preferable over life…like if you have incurable diseases, or mental illness that causes a lot of suffering and also can’t be fixed.
However I don’t believe any reason is required. Nobody asked to be born…so why should we be forced to live a life we don’t want?
If anyone wants to die, no matter their health state, they should be granted that right…I’d say almost any age where a child is able to think and decide they don’t want to live…say 10 yrs or older.
Just because you deny someone medically supervised access to a means of death, doesn’t mean their desire to end their life goes away. It just means they’ll resort to more dangerous methods to kill themselves, which sometimes fails and leaves them even worse off, they can even become a vegetable after, being a drain on the state.
So like Abortion, some sensible rules should be in place, but the adult, sensible, sane thing to do is allow humans to have access to the best medical resources to terminate unwanted pregnancies and end lives with dignity and peace.

If not for Christian values in western countries slavery would still be practised here as it does in non Christian countries. There would be no social safety net, no SPCA, etc etc. Stronly suggest a listen to ‘Christian MP shares the Gospel in Parliament’. I was amazed how many things we take for granted today that would not exist had it not been for our Christian values.
It’s easy to argue, ‘I’m kind and we would have done the same.’ But here’s where there is no evidence to that claim….Back in the days when Sparta was active, a child that didn’t appear they’d grow into a warrior…they were tossed off cliffs. No one saw anything wrong in that.
Roman Empire….the Romans proudly brought their slaves from far as England and paraded them on the streets. They made sport of killing people in the Colloseum.
Non Christian countries have murdered more people, their own citizens in the past century than both world wars and other western wars combined.

Excellent comment, Violet . As for the atheists you address here, I’m afraid it will be of no consequence to them.
However, it is in full agreement with a book by Mr. David Horowitz, “Dark Agenda.”
They have the same in mind for us today; to destroy Christianity. Completely, if they are able. Thankfully, they will not succeed.
Many societies in the ancient past sacrificed their children on a daily basis. All of those are now gone for good.
Fitna says
I don’t know if you even bother to read my posts SomeHistory, but I’ve repeatedly said I don’t have an issue with any religion, so long as they kept their views to themselves.
The trouble is that Christians don’t believe their ideas only apply to themselves, but to everyone (including non-Christians), which makes you religion (like Islam) a supremacist ideology.
They want to overturn hard-won freedoms for women rights-as in Abortion, for gay/trans rights, for Euthanasia and so forth.
It is religious people that want to take these rights/freedoms away and want to destroy the LGBT for example. If you’re going to fight against such advances in society, are you surprised you’ll get opposition?
Christianity is dying off on its own…because like all religions it’s based on lies, idiocy, superstitious garbage and outdated nonsense from 2,000 years ago. Also because there is no God…imagine how different the world would look if god existed.
Secularists have been defeating Christians in court case after court case, such as in the teaching of Evolution vs Creationism, Cosmology, the imposition of religion in the classroom, violating the separation of church/state and so on.
Smart people are beginning to realize that religion is a force of evil and retrogression today (and has been for a long time). So they reject religion in favor of science/reason/humanism.
This is why Churches are emptying all across Europe and I’m sure in the US also…where Christians will become a minority in one generation-Hallelujah to that. 😉
One day your cannibal death cult based on a god nailed to a cross will become as little remembered as Zeus, Thor, Poseidon and the rest of the 6,000 gods humans invented and no longer worship…eventually the same will happen with Allah as well.
Fitna says
I’ll add, Sam Harris made a very interesting point.
If hypothetically we had a global catastrophe (call it a flood) and all our books were destroyed and all religious people were wiped out, in time we would rebuild our civilization and rediscover science.
We’d learn how to make fire again, the wheel, computer chips, machines, nuclear power, etc., etc. However nobody would know about (or rediscover) Allah, Jesus, Baghwan or any of the other gods people worship today.
Why is that? Think about it, there’s a pretty deep message there. 🙂
Fitna says
You need to brush up on your history Violet.
Christianity has always been a retrogressive force and back then everyone had to be a Christian or you’d be jailed/killed…much like is the case in Islamic countries.
Christians were the ones buying slaves from Arabs to take back to Europe and the USA…they were on both sides of the slavery issue.
Hitler/Nazis were all Christians and were responsible for the murder of 10 million innocents. Christians went around ‘colonizing’ other countries, while robbing/raping and pillaging them killing/enslaving tens of millions along the way…also spreading Christianity through ‘fire and sword.’
Rome was convert to Christianity in 380 CE….and spread by Constantine in 313 AD throughout the Roman Empire.
You ran off on a weird tangent without once addressing anything I’ve mentioned regarding Euthanasia…the main topic of discussion here.
What Christian “values” are you referring to being applied here? The morality of killing your children if your god demands it? Genociding people to take their land and turn their women into sex slaves? Speaking of which, respecting your slave-masters?
How about calling unbelieving women ‘witches’ and calling Atheist scientists ‘heretics’ and burning them at the stake? How about waging wars against fellow Christians because they interpreted the Bible differently?
Oh such great values…what about destroying Pagan rituals like ‘Winter Solstice’ and turning it into Christmas?
What about the great value of forcing women to die in childbirth because you deny them Abortion rights? Not because of any actual moral reason or benefit because you think there’s a magic man in the sky and you think this would please him…same goes for Euthanasia.
We haven’t even touched on the Christian ‘love’ (hate) for gays LGBT, unbelievers and anyone who doesn’t believe in the same religious BS they do.
Muslims would be laughing at you right now saying “you’re just like me but you pretend to be morally superior.”

Are we surprised!? In the larger and historical context from the promoters of eugenics and population control using any means, this is just a continuation of disguised government policies to eliminate as many of us as possible; and Trudeau, being a faithful graduate of the WEF, wants Canada to be a leader in this regard; and, in fact, he has been and is very successful in achieving this goal, as have many other globalist controlled governments such as the U.S. We are neck deep in a culture of death and have been for many decades and much blame has to be attributed to the collective stupidity and mental laziness of an indifferent and cowardly populace, especially those lacking in any independent and critical skills.

I see you want to gloss over subtle, nuanced reasoning and justification for MAiD and instead resort to fanatical conclusions…how typical of theists.

There is nothing about your comments that are either subtle or nuanced or even intelligently atheistic, if that’s what your position is…

When I worked for temp agencies, one sent me for a long-term assignment with a company that sent nurses to hospices. I had that position until someone hired to do the job was trained to do the job.
Every day I went home with a horrible headache. At first, I didn’t know why; until I figured out it was from unshed tears.
I had to read and record the daily reports from the nurses. Every one of them, every one, had the nurses reporting about their conversations with the dying patients. And in every one, without any omissions, the patient was told by the nurses to “get ready to die.” To “think about dying,” and other phrases which were meant to make the person give up on life.
And in every case, the nurse recorded that the patients would say they didn’t want to die, didn’t want to think about dying, didn’t want to give up hope that they would get well and go home.
And there were some patients who outlived the required limit of six months to live and had to be seen by the doctor again and be given another six months.
that program of “hospice ***care****” is a program of assisted suicide. Yes, the doctors dx in each case was a terminal illness and the patient wouldn’t live longer than six months due to the terminal illness.
But, doctors can be, and often are, wrong.
Besides, why should a person who wants to live be made to ‘think about” and “get ready to accept” death?
The “will to live” is one of the strongest feelings a human can have. Too many want to take that away from others while they go on enjoying life.
I feel so sad for any who are **talked into*** committing suicide. The *talkers* will reap as they are sowing

It’s good to see where Christians get their absurd so-called ‘morals’ from.
You are aware the Bible was not written nor sent by any gods right? It was humans who made up this garbage and wrote it down for other humans to follow blindly.
This would be no different than me inventing a religion about a unicorn living in my shoe and it tells me what is right and wrong and that everyone must follow this unicorn.
“I your Unicorn Lord gave you life and you cannot take it away, no matter how much pain and suffering you experience…otherwise I will send you to hell forever!” Thus sayeth your Unicorn God.
Imagine being afraid of words on a page, written by other humans. You’re a bunch of adult babies who don’t think for yourselves.
That might’ve been ok if you didn’t interfere with other people’s lives, but unfortunately you seek to impose your insane ideas on others and that makes you a problem for the rest of us.
If you claim your god is real, tell him to meet me and say all these things to my face. He won’t because he doesn’t exist.
