What about Dan Gibson’s works and the issue of Petra? A recent article in Entropy seemed to pretty clear identify Petra and the first holy city of Islam.

I really don’t believe in the veracity of the Torah history either— does that mean I shud regrow my foreskin?

Nobody obliges you to believe in the veracity of theTorah history. The big difference is that the Jews don’t oblige believers of other religions to believe in their histories and don’t threaten them to be killed because they are “infidels”.

The historians mentioned by RS were not contemporaries of the beginning of Chritianity and were actually simply repeating the claims of the Christians whom they did not take very seriously anyway. Given the life expectancy of the time it is highly unlikely that any contemorary of Jesus was alive when the first gospels were written. They would have to have been small children at the time when he was alleged to have been crucified. Had it not been for Emperor Constantine adopting Christianity as an official religion of the Roman Empire it is possible that it would not have become so powerful. The Mithraic religion was equally poplular throughout the Empire.
