You Are Whatever You Say You Are, Or, How The West Was Lost

At a school in Great Britain, one more example of the insanity that has gripped large parts of the Western world was recently on display. One pupil, a 13-year-old eighth grader, questioned another pupil’s decision to identify as a “cat.” This innocent inquiry was overheard by the teacher, who went into a tirade about that child even daring to question another child’s “choice” of “identity.” More on this bizarrerie can be found in this story from several weeks ago, which, sadly, retains its relevance: “Teacher calls student ‘despicable’ for questioning classmate’s claim she’s a cat,” by Eric Utter, American Thinker, June 24, 2023:

Recently, a 13-year-old girl was called “despicable” by her progressive, tolerant, inclusive, and nonjudgmental teacher at a Church of England school in the United Kingdom after asking a classmate how she could identify as a cat.

The schoolgirl– and her friend– were reprimanded by the Rye College teacher near the end of an eighth grade “life education” class, in which they were told: “Be who you want to be and how you identify is up to you,” according to The Telegraph.

Following the “lesson,” one of the students asked a classmate: “How can you identify as a cat when you’re a girl?” Good question. Inquiring minds want to know.

But not the teacher, who then informed the students they were being reported to school administrators and would no longer be welcome at the school if they continued to express radical beliefs such as that one can’t become another sex– or species—simply by claiming to be one.

A video clip, taken by one of the students, shows the teacher remarking, “How dare you, you’ve just really upset someone” by “questioning their identity.”

To which the student replies: “If they want to identify as a cat or something then they are genuinely unwell – crazy.” The teacher then proceeds to ask the young girls where they got the preposterous notion that there are only two genders. The indoctrinator avers:

Gender is not linked to the parts that you were born with, gender is how you identify, which is what I said right from the very beginning of the lesson.” Right. Gender in no way correlates to the “parts that you were born with,” which are randomly distributed– for some reason. Or, more likely, no reason at all….

Microaggressions and hate speech allegedly abound. “Misgender” somebody or “dead name” them and you are deemed to be a monster. Words are now frequently construed as “literally violence” by those on the left. Yet, the unimpeachably progressive “educator” finds it okay—necessary even—to label a young student “despicable” for her failure to believe a person who claims to be a cat…actually is one. Wow.

Fellow Westerners, one question: Just how much intolerance (disguised as tolerance), authoritarianism, amorality– and insanity –are you willing to put up with?

My fellow Americans, perhaps it is time we listened to our founding fathers……rather than obeying the Marxist/Fascist whackos who would be our masters.

If I choose to identify as an African-American, can I qualify for reparations in California? Can I be admitted to the college of my choice under affirmative action?

If I choose to identify as a woman, and exhibit couvade-like symptoms, or pseudocyesis, can I go on paid maternity leave?

If I choose to identify as a cat, will the government pay CHEWY to deliver Friskies Party Mix Natural Yums With Real Chicken Cat Treats to my door?

Questions, very good questions.

        2. Right now, there are 2 enemies to civilization – not just islam, but the woke movement as well – in the Americas, Europe, Australasia and parts of Asia. In b/w, JihadWatch included the “Left Column” that weighed in on the latter, except that that thing easily drowns out jihad. But that doesn’t mean this is not worth noticing

        On one hand, you have a movement that wants teenage girls to marry, and perform FGMs on them. On the other, you have a movement that wants to convert males into females, and females into males, cutting off genitalia and doing totally unnatural alterations to people. Neither of these movements is worth ignoring, and neither of them are our allies against the other

  5. And the “teacher”….they are teaching something unholy, unhealthy and untrue….in Canada who lambasted her mozlum students for being absent when she and others were celebrating ‘pride.’

    These lying fools complain that “feelings are being hurt,” but then they call the ones who are sticking with the Truth, all kinds of “hateful” names; hateful being one of them.

Somehow, race is one of those attributes that one cannot be fluid about, even though race is one of the most fluid things/socially constructed given that one has mixed race people & so on: it is the ultimate “non-binary” attribute that there is, in sharp contrast to sex/gender, species & so on. It’s just fortunate that nobody has decided that muslims deserve reparations, b’cos the day someone does, everybody in the vicinity of that jurisdiction would just recite the shehada and line up for those checks

  7. This seems to be an extension of the sixties. Cat Stevens wrote a song which you can hear in the movie Harold and Maude called If you want to sing out, sing out… It is in a YouTube video in the whole form. Actually this is pure fantasy. YOu cannot be me, etc. It is probably just the mentality. My mom told me before I went to college I could be whatever I wanted to be. And that was not true. In sociology courses we read The Social Construction of Society, a book that claimed that institutions were made up and could be made up differently. This idea was followed by many academics and students. They called it social constructionism. I suppose the two parent family is also a social construction like many others. But perhaps it is also the best one for our time and society. And a better one than most of the other sorts like patchwork, serial, successive, single parent, polygamy and gay marriage family. The others might work sometimes but perhaps not so well. Anyway, I think that the left has simply stretched this idea beyond the limits of common sense. I cannot be you and you cannot be me, and fantasy cannot serve us well, if we try to realize impossible things.

    • And remember that Cat Stevens would go on to convert to Islam, call himself Yusuf Islam, and advocate murdering Salman Rushdie. Not exactly hippie peace and love…

  8. Hey Teacher: ‘cat’ is not a gender identity. Like humans, cats are mammals, with male and female SEXES. But if she wants to be a cat, give her the same food that other cats eat. Let her lick her body to clean herself and let’s see her walk on all fours and eat with her tongue in the cat bow on the floor. No utensils needed.

    • Better yet – give her a live mouse and tell her to catch it, play with it for a while, kill it, and eat it.

    I entirely agree with you, but please refrain from using words like ‘couvade-like symptoms (couvade: men’s pregnancy), or pseudocyesis’ (false pregnancy). It’s pompous. And yes, I looked them up. And yes, the range of my English idiom isn’t half bad; I can assure you!

And in reaction to your beautiful words: ‘Quousque tandem abutere, Hugh, patientia nostra!’ In other words: I too can be pompous, but at least I try to avoid it. (F.y.i.: the only ‘new’ word you supplied (where I’m concerned) is ‘magari’).

    Excellent piece from Hugh Fitzgerald–especially in pointing out the vicious hypocrisy of the teacher brutally castigating a child for daring to point out the obvious.

    And this is also more infantilization–if a 3-year-old child “identifies” as a cat it is cute, to a point at least–if a 13-year-old does this it is cause for concern over her mental health, not something to be encouraged by her school.
