‘Not Enough’: Chicago Suburb Begins Paying Reparations to Black Residents

At long last, justice has come: the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Ill., has begun paying reparations to black residents. So now that historic wrongs have been righted, a new era of racial harmony will dawn in northern Illinois, right? Wrong: one local “civil rights activist” is already complaining that the payouts are too meager and more money is needed. Despite the discontent, however, supporters of the scheme are optimistic, with one even terming it “a test run for the whole country.” Yeah, that’s the problem.

The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that Evanston will shell out $25,000 to around 140 black residents of Evanston by the end of this year. This is just a small part of $10 million in reparations payments that the city approved in 2019, so lots more free money is coming. Meanwhile, the party has already begun for sixteen Evanston residents who have already received their dough and are now experiencing the bliss of ancient injustices redressed. These people have been suffering from the racism of the white supremacists in Evanston for a long time; a Thursday report in Slay noted that “individuals must have been at least 18 years old and resided in the city between 1919 and 1969 to qualify for the payments.”

One would think that Evanston would be ringing with hosannas for this dawning of Democrat vote bribery, uh, that is, racial justice, but somehow the joy of equity is still proving to be elusive, at least for some Evanstonians. Alleged civil rights activist Bennett Johnson, according to Slay, is not satisfied at all. He complained about the fact that the city set 1969 as the cutoff year, saying it was “totally arbitrary”; however, that was the year that Evanston passed a fair housing law. The righteous Johnson claimed that black Americans in Evanston continued to be “discriminated” against and “hurt,” and so presumably the payments should extend far beyond 1969.

Slay noted that Johnson “also contended that the payments were not enough.” He said angrily: “I believe that [Evanston is] doing the same thing that we’ve done in the past, downgrading the ability of black people to do things for themselves.” Now wait a minute, Mr. Johnson. Isn’t that exactly what reparations do: downgrade the ability of black people to do things for themselves? Isn’t the very premise of the reparations frenzy the idea that black people have been simply unable to overcome all the racist roadblocks that Whitey has fiendishly put in their way?

Doesn’t the idea of reparations also assume that these roadblocks have remained in place long after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, via innumerable structures of systemic racism that are so insidiously subtle that they can only be discerned by highly-paid instructors in Critical Race Theory? Isn’t the idea of reparations predicated on the assumption that black people can’t do things for themselves and that this is Whitey’s fault, and so Whitey needs to give black people a special boost in the form of a generous cash payout?

  1. Don’t forget to ask for reparations from the Arabs:the muslims were the biggest slave traders in history{and for centuries}Of course there were also white people enslaved but they don’t qualify.say isn’t that racism?

  2. This is just another welfare scam. They take money away from taxpayers as quietly as they can and then make a loud announcement that they are giving reparations for slavery. The aim is not helping the poor victims but instead to get votes from the groups that benefit from the giveaways. Like the Democrats care about black people. The Democrats were the supporters of slavery back before the Civil War, and they supported the KKK and Jim Crow afterwards.

    Right – to have been 18 in 1919 requires the recipient to have been born in 1901. Exactly how many 122-year old black Chicagoans are there? and if they made it to the age of 122, I guess they actually had it pretty good?

    Of course, what’s annoying Bennett Johnson is that nobody’s given him any free money yet, and I see a way in which his demeaning desire to receive money for things that never happened from people who didn’t do them, could be brought right up to date as he demands.

    My niece’s school once held a charity fund-raising event in which the teachers were put in the stocks and pupils paid a small sum to to throw wet sponges at them. I am sure that there must be many hundreds of Chicagoans of all classes and colours who would happily pay a dollar a time to pelt the ridiculous Mr Johnson with wet sponges – which would simultaneously both feed his sense of victimhood and recompense him for it at the same time.

  6. Did the voters of this suburb have any say in this? I’m just wondering what sane person would vote for something like that, or for representatives who would impose something like that? Unless you’re a recipient or trying to buy votes, it makes no sense at all.

  8. Payment to Irish who came here as indentured servants ( fancy name for white slave)
    The indentured servants work their entire lives in the new world trying to pay their debts
    Payment to German American
    who were inturned during Ww1
    Moslems need to pay for their history of slave trade both black and white

    • There is a difference b/w indentured servants & slaves. Slaves were property, & had considerable monetary value, whereas indentured servants were just expense items: they’d get paid peanuts, but had to work hard for it. There is a reason the railroads weren’t built by slaves: if they died, their owners stood to lose a lot in terms of assets: it’s why they were usually built by the indentured servants. If they died, they were easily & cheaply replaced

      This is not to justify, much less endorse, either of these categories, but just describing the way they were, and the economic factors behind the differences in their treatment

  10. Paying people money due to their color. As others have noted, there were White slaves too, but no one is paying White people for their ancestors having been White slaves.

    And furthermore, why don’t they have to prove their parents or grandparents were slaves in order to get something for nothing? To belong to an American Indian tribe, one must prove his ancestry. Why don’t the Blacks have to prove their ancestors were actually enslaved by White people and the Whites who will be paying for this…and the others in the city who pay taxes…have to be proven to have had ancestors who owned slaves. Even then, it isn’t fair and right.

    As Mr. Spencer notes, it’s vote-buying.

      In many if not most cases, inner city blacks have no idea who daddy might be.

      • Exactly. likely not descendants of slaves.
        People who learn to work hard, pass along the idea to their children and grandchildren that work has benefits….and not just monetary ones.

In the meantime, Fulton County, Georgia – the county that contains the heart of Atlanta and Alpharetta – is making plans to spend $210k on a feasability study on reparations, even while they’re struggling to find money to build a jail and a hospital. Just wondering – doesn’t Gov Brian Kemp get to intervene in this, or does Georgia’s constitution give counties more leeway in this matter?

  12. It should be the other way around. After all, whites have abolished slavery. They should be thankful for that.
