House Republican Refers to ‘Colored People,’ and All Hell Breaks Loose

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass. SSR), who wants us to know that we can refer to him by male pronouns (thus calling his claimed masculinity into question), summed up the high dudgeon that prevailed all over Washington on Tuesday: “Wow. Republicans are just openly calling my colleagues ‘colored people’ on the House Floor now. They’re bringing amendments to the floor to stop bases named after Confederate traitors from getting new names. The GOP is not even hiding the racism anymore.” McGovern and many of his colleagues were enraged at Rep. Eli Crane (R-Ariz.), who referred to “colored people” on the House floor Thursday, thus giving Leftist hysterics an opportunity to pretend that Bull Connor was strutting around again, setting fire hoses and German shepherds on poor, defenseless… people of color.

It was widely reported that Crane had used the forbidden phrase in reference to black Americans: NBC News headlined its story, “Arizona Republican refers to Black Americans as ‘colored people’ in House floor debate.” However, while speaking about an amendment he had proposed to a defense policy bill, Crane actually said this: “My amendment has nothing to do with whether or not colored people or black people or anybody can serve. It has nothing to do with any of that stuff.” This recalls the usage of South Africa even in the post-apartheid era, where people of mixed race are known as “colored people” and are considered a distinct category from “black people.”

Crane, however, is not South African, and he says he just got the words wrong: “In a heated floor debate on my amendment that would prohibit discrimination on the color of one’s skin in the Armed Forces, I misspoke. Every one of us is made in the image of God and created equal.” That’s not going to calm anyone on the Left down. When saying “colored people” is an outrageous offense and evidence of a deeply rooted racism, but saying “people of color” shows one’s allyship and concern for healthy race relations, Crane ought to be excused for getting confused. The rules are arbitrary and the social death penalty—complete destruction of one’s reputation—that is handed down for infractions is unjust.

The arbitrariness and injustice are underscored by the fact that the acceptable phrase keeps changing, as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, baseball’s old Negro Leagues, and the United Negro College Fund bear witness. A few years ago, HBO revived Perry Mason, transforming Raymond Burr’s unbeatable defense attorney from the late Fifties and early Sixties into a private investigator in the 1930s. Today’s sensibilities being what they are, it is no surprise that the remake also changed Mason’s sidekick Paul Drake from white to black. But the writers of the series being witless twenty-first-century millennials with no knowledge of history, they baked in an anachronism.

  3. Some thoughts: 1) NAACP: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is not offensive
    2) ‘Colored People’ is offensive but ‘People of Color is not.

Seems I recall the old comic strip by liberal Berkeley Breathed called “Bloom County,” where one of his characters used the term ‘colored people’ rather than ‘people of color,’ causing the protagonist’s head to explode. But the character, possibly the protagonist’s older mother or visiting aunt, questioned the difference in using those terms. But David above, has it down pat.

  6. Yesterday, there was a story about some rapper (it isn’t music) in california who was whining and griping about a bar in which the owners….some White guys….used the same “Font” to write the name of their business as the rapper used to write his “name.”

    Some letters were the same in the names, also. One line in the account of the whining, was that these Whites were using a name for Blacks that is “***forbidden”*** for Whites to use in spelling out the name of their bar.
    For the life of me, I couldn’t see any word in the name, so I have no idea what is the “forbidden” word, but if I find out, I’ll use it.

    This entire thing….poc or cp….there is no difference. It’s being used as a weapon to drive people apart.
    When idiots such as aoc talk about the “rich” and biden saying “pay their fair share,” it’s for the same reason….drive people apart, make the various sides angry enough to fight and kill.

    There are racists on all sides. there are people of every persuasion who don’t like others. that isn’t news, and it isn’t going to change. People like their own “kind” more than they like those who are different, even if they like those who are different.

    It’s not just childish (children behave better at acceptance of color differences) to make a big deal over a phrase or a word. It’s devilish. And it has an evil purpose.

  8. Part of being a Leftist is to be offended by most anything which is not Leftist, and which serves as just one more indicator of how intolerant and totalitarian Leftism truly is. Cancel culture, after all, was not developed by old-fashion liberals, moderates, conservatives or even the Far Right. Nope, it’s all due to the Far Left though many non-Leftists have allowed themselves to be intimidated by Leftists and this should cease because a bully will remain a bully until that bully is confronted and brought down.

      • Hope springs eternal, somehistory, but we need a massive correction of Leftist rot soon like or America will be lost forever.

        • I think ,Wellington, that most people just do not pay attention unless they are directly affected. The law in Texas was recently changed regarding what is taught in the universities and that is one reason this woman was thwarted from getting a tenured position like she wanted.
          If your electricity goes out on a hot summer day, you notice. But it it’s across town where the car hits the pole, you have no idea just how miserable the other people are.
          Some of us were probably born paying attention even when we aren’t directly affected by circumstances. Others have to be given a special alert before they notice. Like some beer drinkers were recently.
