I found it fascinating how in order to confirm Mohammed as the “seal of the prophets”, they got rid of adoption, & also made up that he lost all his sons. They could have just made up that he had only daughters

The local Syrians had their theological disputes w/ their Byzantine overlords in Constantinople, and took advantage of the weakening of both the Byzantine & Sassanids, who had burnt each other out by their 20-year war. As a result, the Syrians had little difficulty in overrunning Palestine, capturing Jerusalem and going on to conquer both Egypt and Iran. It also addresses the question about whether or not Mu’awiya existed
That would also explain all that Syraic texts that appear in the earliest documents. They probably wove those stories around things they found at Petra, which had the first Ka’aba. Mecca & Medina only came into the picture later, when Arabs from that area wanted their sites to be given its importance
It also explains why the “gates of ijtehad” were closed by the Abbasids: if they codified that religion, they would be the ones w/ the most vested interests in seeing that it never changed
I look forward to your book on the Byzantines. Will it describe what happened in Syria in 620 as per these accounts, or as per the accounts of the Muslims?
