Islam started from 2 religions. A doomsday cult of Arianists believed that if they took Jerusalem, that it would hasten the 2nd coming. The Germans have the historical documents to prove this. After Jerusalem fell to them, Jesus didn’t come, and the Nabataeans moved into the vacuum. Most of what we call Islam, such as the Quran, pilgrimage, and mosques, is from the Nabataean religion. That is why some mosques and Qurans are older than the mythical Mohammed. The pilgrimage rock was moved from Petra to Mecca (again that is well documented). This religion was good at war, and they conquered a large territory. Then a couple hundred years later, the warlord stuff which we all hate, such as death to the apostates and the hadiths, was added to this religion to unite the empire.

Which pope are you referring to? Pope Urban II, iirc, was the one who called for a crusade, and the rulers of England, France & Austria responded. They were the leading powers in Europe at the time
In fact, the First Crusade was the only one that captured Jerusalem, while the Third Crusade conquered much of Palestine but stopped short of Jerusalem. After that, there were some 9 more Crusades, none of which made much headway
