A butcher identified as Usman Buda has been killed in Sokoto, Northwest Nigeria for allegedly blaspheming Prophet Muhammad.
According to Daily Trust, the butcher allegedly made the comment during an argument with another trader at the Sokoto main Abattoir around 8 am on Sunday.
“Our leaders made a fruitless attempt to save him but they could not contain the crowd. They initially rescued him and hid him before they were overpowered.
“He was beaten to death by his fellow butchers. His corpse was later taken away by the police,” an eyewitness told Daily Trust.
Another account said some of Buda’s closest business partners who attempted to rescue him sustained injuries and “are currently receiving treatment at the hospital”.
The deceased reportedly hailed from Tambuwal local government area but resided at Gidan Igwe in Sokoto North local government area.
He sold cow entrails at the Sokoto Fish and Vegetables Market.
One of his neighbours identified as Malam Yusuf described his death as painful.
“Usman is my immediate neighbour. He is very religious; in fact, he belonged to Izala sect. We prayed and attended Tafsir together at primary board quarters. There is no way he could make such a statement against the Holy Prophet.
“There must be a reason behind his murder because he is very popular in his business of selling cow entrails and was envied by many of his colleagues,” he said….

That sounds like a system that can be, and is, used as a weapon. North Korea also has one of those. Anyone accused of saying anything critical about the big guy could be staring at an anti-aircraft gun demise. Demerit ruling systems not only invite abuse as a weapon, they, more importantly, when patently followed, doom their societies to insecurity, immaturity, and poverty.

“Sokoto Gov. Ahmed Aliyu said local residents should not take laws into their hands. But he also warned that his government would “deal decisively” against anyone found guilty of blasphemy.
“Sokoto people have so much respect and regard for Prophet Muhammad … hence the need for all the residents to respect (and) protect his dignity and personality,” Abubakar Bawa, his spokesman, said.
Many of those accused of blasphemy never make it to court for trial. Last year, a student in Sokoto was beaten and burnt to death for alleged blasphemy while a man was killed and set ablaze for the same reason in the capital city of Abuja also in the northern region.
The police in Sokoto said it has opened an investigation into the latest incident, though arrests are rare in such cases.
“Even where arrests were made, there were serious allegations that those arrested were either later released or the whole case is jeopardized. This is very dangerous and it shows the Nigerian authorities are deliberately not willing to do the right thing to fix this dangerous situation,” Sanusi added.”
