Frank Marshal Davis was his intellectual mentor, in Hawaii. Davis was a stalinist and remained one even after it was revealing the extent of Stalin’s terror in Russia. Davis wrote books and there are pdf’s I imagine still on the internet.

Just going by the timelines, I think it very unlikely. The KGB ceased to exist in 1991, and at that time, Obama was still moving around in academic circles
