15:00 I had no idea that Jay Smith was from the sub-continent. Nor did I realize that Maudidi is influential way beyond the subcontinent. On the reasons for his popularity, I disagree w/ Jay that it’s being in English is the reason for its popularity, aside from in UK & the US. Most of the literature in the subcontinent on the Deobandi and the Barelvi schools are in Urdu, w/ some Bengali translations done for Bangladesh. They were originally in Farsi during the Mughal era, but were translated to Urdu as the latter replaced Farsi as the mainstream language of the subcontinent’s muslims
This is exactly what is needed for apologetics and Robert Spencer is exactly the kind of informed intellect from whom you would wish to take a college course, someone who is informed in the sources and can direct you to what other scholars have said, are saying. This is a particular skill and frankly to be preferred in academic study on a collegiate level. In Study with a scholar commonly one discovers they lack a breath of informed knowledge of their own field beyond their Graduate work. You would be hard pressed for example to find a PhD in most colleges who could successfully teach the History of Philosophy as in Grad School they only studied one philosopher like Kant or the Ancient Greeks. In Biblical studies they may have a denominational expertise or linguistic one or can cover the directed study of their own work in Neo Orthodoxy or Liberation Theology. Most of us would instead prefer to read a book addressing questions that arise from a simple reading of the Text of Scripture. Spencer has done this for us with the Quran, which frankly (unlike the Bible) can be a drag to simply sit down and read. My copy of the C.Q. is coming in the Mail this week and I am excited to get it. Thank you Robert Spencer.
