A “ghost” asks for his repatriation. This week, the jihadist Bryan D’Ancona presented himself to the consulate of Istanbul (Turkey), for a singular request: to return to France. Aged 26, this young man was one of the first French people to leave the territory to go to Syria, reports franceinfo. Having left ten years ago, he was also one of the youngest.
It was at the age of 16 that this convert to Islam embarked in 2013 for Istanbul, before joining Syria clandestinely. This former Nice resident had never hidden his desire to join the jihadists in order to fight alongside them, but was influenced by his religious mentor: Omar Diaby. This “spiritual guide” was at the head of an al-Qaida affiliated group active in northwestern Syria.
Although Bryan D’Ancona has left France, the French intelligence services have always kept an eye on him. During these ten years of war, the young man multiplied his attempts to recruit young French people. There, he religiously married a compatriot; she also left for Syria. The couple then settled in a camp near Idlib, in the northwest of the country, before separating.
Before their marriage shattered, these two expatriates had a daughter that Bryan D’Ancona wants to bring back with him to France. Targeted by an arrest warrant, the young man, however, risks being indicted for “criminal association in connection with a terrorist enterprise,” if he sets foot on French territory.
