Egyptian lawyer launches legal case against Netflix for ‘this crime’ of depicting Cleopatra as black

According to the History Channel, Cleopatra was Greek:
While Cleopatra was born in Egypt, she traced her family origins to Macedonian Greece and Ptolemy I Soter, one of Alexander the Great’s generals. Ptolemy reigned Egypt after Alexander’s death in 323 B.C., and he launched a dynasty of Greek-speaking rulers that lasted for nearly three centuries.
Oxford University Press published an article entitled Cleopatra’s true racial background (and does it really matter?). It sure does matter to Egyptian lawyer Mahmoud al-Semary, who is so outraged that Cleopatra was depicted as black by Netflix that he just launched a lawsuit for what he called “this crime.” He wants Netflix to be blocked in Egypt altogether.  ccording to Greek historian Herodotos over 2500 years ago, “ethnicity was regularly turned to political ends.” Apparently we’ve come full circle. The Oxford article points out:
She was born in early 69 BC as the descendant of a line of Egyptian kings in a dynasty that went back 250 years. Her ancestor Ptolemy I, a companion of Alexander the Great, founded the dynasty in the late fourth century BC. Ptolemy was Macedonian Greek in origin (he grew up at the royal court of Alexander’s father in Macedonia, the northern part of the Greek peninsula), and established himself as king of Egypt in the convulsive years after Alexander’s death. The descent passed through six successor Ptolemies until it reached Cleopatra’s father. So Cleopatra was no more than eight generations away from being pure Macedonian Gree

One thing is certain: Cleopatra has been glorified by Hollywood as a charismatic Egyptian woman of beauty, character and intellect. All through the years, you didn’t hear the Greeks whining about the stripping of Cleopatra’s Greek identity.
Imagine the outcry if it were a Greek lawyer! But it is an Egyptian lawyer who has accused Netflix of “distorting the Egyptian identity.” It’s no secret that “there is a color line in the Muslim world.” Shhhhhh, but it’s only supposed to be white people who are racist. The truth is that on the African continent where Arabs dominate, in locations including Sudan, Mauritania, Libya and Algeria, Muslims are still holding black slaves. Yet the woke West focuses on the past enslavement of blacks by whites, not the current slavery by Arabs. Black Lives Matter doesn’t care, either. Who could have guessed that Queen Cleopatra could stir up such a hornets nest in Egypt because she was depicted by woke Netflix as black.  Let’s see if the Obamas, who are so involved with Netflix productions and social issues, will address the issue of racism in the Arab world.

“Queen Cleopatra: Netflix sued by Egyptian lawyer for blackwashing history,” Greek City Times, April 19, 2023:

An Egyptian lawyer has filed a case with the Public Prosecutor to close the Netflix platform after the trailer of “Queen Cleopatra” was released, which depicts the Greek historical figure as a black-skinned woman.

According to Egypt Independent, Mahmoud al-Semary demanded that all legal measures be taken against those responsible for the documentary and the management of the streaming platform for its participation in “this crime.” He also called for an investigation and for Netflix to be blocked in Egypt.

The complaint submitted against the streaming platform said that “most of what Netflix platform displays contradicts Islamic and societal values and principles, especially Egyptian ones.”

It added that the platform displayed advertisements that attracted millions of people in the world to watch the documentary Queen Cleopatra, who was of Greek origin depicting her as black woman, unlike Egyptian history and civilization.

The case said that the documentary promotes Afrocentrism that is widely spread on social media, which have slogans and writings aimed at distorting and obliterating the Egyptian identity.

The complaint continued addressing Public Prosecution: “In order to preserve the Egyptian national and cultural identity among Egyptians all over the world and take pride in it, and to consolidate the spirit of belonging to the homeland, and accordingly we ask and seek you to take the necessary legal measures against this platform.”

It demanded stopping broadcasts showing all works aimed at obliterating and distorting the Egyptian identity, through films aimed at falsifying and distorting history in Egypt…..

      Walter, anyone who has traveled North Africa will quickly realize that the population is basically Caucasian and many lighter than some European countries. Can anyone imagine the verbosity (and rightly so) if Nelson Mandella or Martin Luther King Jr. were to be portrayed by a white actor in some movie? All hell would break loose.

  3. Muslims are the worst offenders for falsifying history and trying to take credit for the achievements of conquered civilizations. But it is refreshing to see someone standing up to the current era where blacks are the ones being built up in movies and media at the expense primarily of whites who to this point seem content to watch as their civilization is overrun and they become a minority themselves. Hopefully White/Christian/European civilization will decide to save itself before it is too late. But who can honestly be hopeful of that given the trajectory we are on?

  4. Netflix’s Bridgerton is certainly a next-level woke fantasy, starring blacks in roles of British Nobel. An uninteresting, unhistoric traverse that has no foundation in the realities of British society 200 years ago. The Bridgerton series is just a symptom of an all-comprising woke leftist trend that is spreading. Now to Egypt.—At least I wish the Egyptian lawyer good luck.

  5. At least someone is standing up to these revisionist history scumbags. The recent depiction of Anne Boleyn as a black women was offensive to me. It was an insult to the sad life of the mother of England’s greatest Monarch Queen Elizabeth Tudor.

    I consider this recent meme of making every other historic and literary character Black to be pretty absurd. Fifty years ago, it was just a handful of Black supremacists who tried to characterize figures like Hannibal and Cleopatra (who was Greek) as Black.

    That being said, as ridiculous and false as this is, it should *not* be illegal. Muslims trying to crush freedom of speech in the West is more harmful than this silliness from Netflix.

    • I agree, g. mozlums are being allowed to take freedom away in many places….can’t tear their book, can’t burn it, can’t even call it what it is…a book of evil filth…without some pol or cop coming down, while mozlums riot, burn, break laws…

      This is a silly suit…it isn’t a crime to *lie* unless one is lying to the authorities (authorities lie to us and each other without much consequence). Of course, lying is wrong, and Truth on every subject is buried, but mozlums have so many ways to lie, his suit should be kicked out.

  11. So many have made famous Whites out to be black, the list is long. I recall some years ago when many began saying Jesus Christ was black, and Christians just had to *live* with it…no suits, no retractions, just digging in the heels on the part of the liars.

    What is worse than the film makers portraying the late queen as black, is the fact that mozlums claim all people as mozlum…all the way back to Adam, including Moses, Jesus, and every other person in the Bible.
    Someone should file suit…haha…against mozlums for telling these giant lies.
