The Left bet that with enough pressure they could shut down democratic judicial reform in Israel.
The Left, in Israel and in the United States, bet that with enough pressure they could shut down democratic judicial reform in Israel. The weak point in the coalition government, as in every government where he has served as prime minister, is Netanyahu. The tragic truth to anyone who has been paying attention to Israeli politics long enough is that given enough pressure, he buckles, frees terrorists, freezes construction and backs off attack plans.
This was a mostly solid coalition that, like a fish, rotted from the head down. And, to be fair to Bibi, this time there was a lot of pressure. The Biden administration and the EU joined forces with not only the Israeli Left which rioted in the streets, but assorted influencers who play at being pro-Israel in the U.S. Usually credible papers like the Jerusalem Post did nothing but churn out hateful propaganda. And yet, approaching the finish line, Bibi held out until he buckled. A weak man is always the weak point and he’s a weak man.
What was at stake in judicial reform was democracy itself. The howling leftist mobs stole the slogan, shrieking that they were defending “democracy” when what they were actually defending was an unelected oligarchy sidelining the voters. Those voters had rallied to usher in a Zionist government only to be sold out yet again.
Netanyahu’s surrender put them and the county through weeks of suffering only to throw it all away and show the Left that they are in charge and that if they riot hard enough, take the country hostage, destroy its reputation internationally and collaborate with its enemies, they will get to stay in power.
What are the odds that, like their PLO and Hamas pals, they’ll do it again until they win?

It sounds as if the left in Israel is just as bad as the Dem party and its allies on the far left in the USA. Too bad. I hope they get their comeuppance.

I fear, because the US is losing in Ukraine and Biden’s handlers are anti-Israel, that the weakness seen by opposition forces in Israel will lead to another intifada while the Biden admin will sit on its hands.
I do not understand how dissention over the judiciary elicits more fervor than survival. The forces arrayed against Israel continually grow more sophisticated and powerful while its citizens seem to be growing more complacent and liberal. Air power can’t stop an intifada.

Westman, the United States does not have troops in Ukraine.
Westman says
No one said we had “troops” there, GI.
However, the US does have personnel there as you will discover after this over, operating technical equipment and advising. Our military intelligence operation is also providing targeting information from satellites and ground observers. There are also US mercenaries there, likely paid indirectly by the US.
When a nation, the US, is providing arms, intelligence, personnel, paying the proxy army’s expenses, paying it’s citizens, and paying its pensions then that nation IS at war with the proxy army’s enemy(Russia). And if the proxy army(Ukraine) loses, the historians will record that the US lost its strategic interests, again.
Ukraine is our proxy army, serviced since 2014, bought and paid. And the US is slowly losing in Ukraine. Let’s hope it doesn’t get out of control when the Biden administration is faced with admitting they misled us, or, to cover it up, generate a direct hot war with Russia.
Remembering how Colin Powell was assigned to lie about WMDs in Iraq should alert anyone that defense officials can be forced to lie(fall on their swords) even when it will cost many innocent lives.

Westman says,
“Remembering how Colin Powell was assigned to lie about WMDs in Iraq”
You are assuming that Powell knew that he was lying.
Everything I’ve read suggests that Powell used information that intelligence officials assured him was credible.
And Saddam Hussein was not forthcoming, likely because he did not want to appear weak to his own people – or neighbors.
I could be wrong. If you can cite a credible source proving that Powell was knowingly lying to the United Nations, I would like to see it.

Netanyahu’s Shameful Surrender to the Left
…………………………………
Sadly, I thought this would be likely.

I agree. In the past, Debbie Schlussel had described Netanyahu as talking loud, but carrying a toothpick. He had very good reasons to trim the wings of the judiciary, which was apparently becoming a parallel government, but failed to articulate it at all! And as I’ve pointed out in recent days, Israel is by no means the only country w/ this challenge

Also, Bibi missed a golden opportunity to fire all the diplomats and other government employees who went on strike. He could have trimmed a lot of the bureaucracy and laid down the limitations of judicial power

I’m with you Daniel. Makes me feel so downhearted.
