National Hockey League Discovers It’s Too White, Promises to Do Better

The National Hockey League (NHL) for the first time has conducted a demographic study of the employees of all thirty-two teams, and the results are grim: It turns out that the league is entirely too white and male for our enlightened age. This must not stand, and the league has made it clear that it is going to take immediate measures to correct this unacceptable situation. Quality employees? Winning hockey games? All that is archaic. Henceforth success in the NHL will be measured by how “diverse” each team is.

The Associated Press reported Tuesday that a 24-page report that was presented to the league’s Board of Governors and distributed to multiple internal committees showed that fully “83.6% of the NHL’s workforce is white and that men make up nearly 62% of the total.” Even worse, “more than 90% of players and nearly all coaches and officials are white.” A shiver went up my spine.

Kim Davis, the NHL’s executive vice president of social impact, growth and legislative affairs, emphasized that all this color-of-head-counting was the prelude to concerted action to make sure that hockey would henceforth be a multiracial, multicultural extravaganza: “The whole purpose behind doing a workforce study,” she womansplained, “is to provide a baseline: a fact-based baseline so that you can begin to develop very intentional and specific strategies around where you need to hire, how you need to hire, how you need to improve your brand. This is a good start, but there’s a ways to go.” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman added that the findings of the report will lead to policies “that will produce the greatest impacts in the years to come.”

But the process has already begun. Said Davis: “A number of those steps are already in progress. You can’t expect to recruit [Black, Indigenous and people of color] folks to work in the league if you don’t at the same time have your stadium fan code of conduct underway so people feel like the sport is really serious about growing the fan base. You also have to make sure that you are reaching out to the communities from a youth participation perspective, so all of those efforts are underway.”

The import of the statements from Davis and Bettman was clear: The NHL will henceforth be hiring on the basis of gender and color. Teams will likely even sign players with an eye toward diversity rather than performance. Does this mean that hockey players who happen to be black or Hispanic or Chinese or whatever will get preference over white hockey players who actually play the game better than they do, but have the curse of white skin? Of course it does: in today’s cultural climate, can you see hockey teams passing up a chance to become the most ostentatiously diverse team in the NHL?

  1. Will the basketball follow suit and make the league hirer more white players? Sports teams have always hired players for their ability to play ball .I think their too many large men playing football or too many tall men playing basketball let get “little people under 5 foot tall” some numbers on the field and floorboards with women transwomen ,people in wheelchairs ,and blind people Go woke go broke of course before basketball league owners do anything they will have to check with their Chinese overlords like when Hollywood censor their latest top gun movie .

  2. this is just too stupid. They don’t know how to define “woman” and they make a huge commotion about gender id and personal pronouns, but then teams, businesses, schools, etc. are too White and too male.

    If they don’t know how to define woman, how can they then define White and male?

    Recently, a pair of Levi’s were found in a mine. The label says they were made in 1880. The jeans were auctioned off and sold for 87 thousand dollars. Glenn Beck says they are worth 100 thousand and says he will pay that, even though he doesn’t like Levi.

    the reason he wants the jeans is because of what is written on the inside pocket. It says the jeans were made by only Whites.
    Once upon a time, it was okay to be a White man. Now, nothing is okay if some people with warped minds say they don’t like it.

    I have a question for the warped minds out there: Suppose three or four people are hired and all of them want to be called “they”…or maybe “them.” How does that work?
    If four White guys were all hired and every one of the four were named Robert, this could be easily solved as to what to call each one. Bob, Rob, Robert, Bobby, Robby, …and likely none of them would care which they were called as long as they were informed that it was necessary to keep things running smoothly.
    But the “thems and the theys”…birds of a different sort, entirely. Now let’s see some real hockey. Warning to the theys and thems…they may soon need dental work. (them, too) And the “impact”…that will be “greatest”…might not be a winning great, however.

  5. The left wants to cancel anything that is fun, things that have nothing to do with race ,politics , climate change ,or their woke agendas. Sports was a political neutral something all people of all beliefs, could enjoy in this f up world they want to f that up now .It started to go into over drive with the China flu lock downs to see how the average person who the world elite look at as lab rats running thru a maze of regulations to live their everyday lives under lock down. The world elite want to regulate what you watch, what you eat ,where you live ,they hate you and want to remove any chance of you being free to enjoy or choose how you spend any free time with out their supervision .

  6. What this means is that every school district must address the dearth of ice rinks for use in practice. Virtually every high school has basketball courts, football and baseball fields, and track facilities. Taxpayers need to cough up funds to construct ice rinks. If they balk, the only possible reason would be racism.

  9. Yeah, ice hockey would be White: it’s played mainly in cold countries, although I have heard of hockey rinks in Saudi Arabia. And people who live in cold countries, no matter what their race – Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, Frank, Germanic, Slav, Eskimo, Lapp, et al – happen to be White. It’s just the way people end up being, depending on where they live

    Come up w/ a different sport for Black and Brown people, since there is no ice in b/w the tropics. Water sports should be great, given the hotter climates

    It doesn’t matter. With the left… the issue is never the issue, it’s the narrative that matters. The end game, no pun intended, is to divide and conquer. If there isn’t a problem,,, they simply manufacture one.

  11. The AFL, Australian Football League, had a similar “problem” quite a few years ago with not enough Aboriginal players.
    There solution was to run coaching clinics in the Aboriginal tribal communities during the off season, no wringing of hands and wailing and carrying on.
    The result is some of the finest players the game has ever known as well as a huge PR exercise for the league.
    But maybe in todays world that simple solution isn’t woke enough.

The NHL has made a great deal of self-serving publicity about Willie O’Ree, the first black player in the league, but Willie didn’t think being a pioneer was a big deal and he would rather you think and accept him as any other hockey player good enough to play in the NHL. It is the simple satisfaction with being given an even break, the fair chance, that is missing from the woke version of professional sports. Bettman, an excellent salesman who deftly combines athletic prowess and legacy, has had several financially successful years culminating in the league’s best last year. It would be a shame if excess management’s pandering to wokeness cripples the effort.
