After a disastrous six-week tenure that saw a virtual revolt within her own party, Liz Truss has done everyone a favor and quit. She made an unapologetic U-turn on tax rates amid a storm of criticism that even captured the attention of the New York Times. Prior to election day, Truss had promised to “push a ‘bold plan to cut taxes’ and grow the British economy.” She also lied about controlling the massive rates of illegal migration, which is turning the country into the “dumping ground” of the world.
Now she’s gone, making her the shortest serving prime minister in UK history. Truss’ only accomplishment, in fact, is making history on two fronts: 1. serving as the shortest tenured prime minister ever; and 2. being the last prime minister to meet Queen Elizabeth II for a ceremonial transfer of power.
The Left Column posed the question when Truss first became prime minister: Britain’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss promises to lead as a conservative, but will she really? The answer came faster than anyone could have imagined. Britain now braces for the next so-called “conservative” leader, a country that is in deep crisis after a series of leaders who betrayed their stated principles, and their people.
“Liz Truss: Shortest serving prime ministers in UK history”, by Matt Mathers, Independent, October 20, 2022:
Liz Truss has become the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history, resigning after just 45 days in office.
After a meeting with Sir Graham Brady, chair of the powerful backbench 1922 Committee, at Downing Street on Thursday, Ms Truss told the nation it was clear she could no longer deliver the “mandate” she had been given by her party just weeks earlier.
The backbench rebellion and market turmoil sparked by the disastrous ‘mini-Budget’ which Ms Truss and her then-chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, introduced in late September, finally caught up to her. Keir Starmerhas now demanded a general election.
From Theresa May to Boris Johnson and now Ms Truss, the UK has had a relatively high turnover of prime ministers in recent years, following the divisive vote to leave the European Union in 2016.
Here, The Independent takes a look at some of the shortest serving UK prime ministers in modern history…..

Jeremy Hunt is a major fraud: he engineered all the U-turns that brought Truss down – first on the tax cuts, then on the immigration. But now, he says that he’s not in the running for PM
I can understand people on the Right in Britain dreading another election, where it shows that Labour would win 500+ seats. But the Tories need to have the person holding the real power at the top. If they can’t, they should cave and call the election, and then do their country a favor: not stand, and let the other parties – UKIP, Reform, Reclaim, For Britain and Britain First – put together an electoral alliance

With the debacle of Liz Truss after 44 days Britain has been plunged into a situation few countries have suffered since the days of the 1950s France when governments fell almost weekly. We can discuss the reasons for her short-lived government: her disastrous monetary policy, her U-turns and her seeming lack of discipline within her party. The House of Commons appear to have become a playground for naughty schoolboys.
The truth of the situation is that the House of Commons has become void of any political talent. There was a time when any one of ten MPs could become Prime Minister and successfully lead the country. From 1910 there was a new path from MP to junior minister to party leader. Our MPs came from Grammar Schools to Oxbridge to parliament. The Thatcher cabinet is a good example: every one of her cabinet had gone this route. They were all middle-aged men, who were old enough and mature enough to have been born for the job. Does this fidelity to duty still exist? Doubtful. Britain is still the home of history and tradition. Despite our modernism, it is still there, beneath the surface. Listening to MPs after the fall of Liz Truss, the word was still there, tradition. We will fall back on tradition because we are the oldest government in the world and our system works.
Who are we left with? An ex-PM, Rishi Sunak and Bannerman. The other two I can’t remember. Sunak was not born in this country and has a house in America. Bannerman has not been in parliament long enough and Johnson was elected to get us out of Europe but since then has made so many gaffes it almost seems intentional. The only MP capable of leading this government to any sensible goal is Rees-Mogg; he is an intellectual with a keen sense of tradition. Unfortunately, he does not want the job.
What of the Labour party? The present Conservative government does not need to go the country for 2 years. The Labour party would not face the ‘elephant in the room’: the problem of emigration into Britain. Apart from inflation, the cost of gas and oil, we still have hundreds of young Syrian, Iraqi and African economic migrants landing on our shores every day. We then put them in hotels for which we pay millions every day. The Brexit vote was to stop this invasion but the government of course ignored the people as did LIz Truss who changed her mind within 24 hours.

One can hope that she, along with others like her, do not get rewarded with another term living off the fat of the land.
In her District, the 14th New York Congressional District, https://censusreporter.org/profiles/50000US3614-congressional-district-14-ny/ the Median Household Income is $64,445. AOC is paid almost 3x times that amount, $174,000 for simply breathing and taking up space.
Hopefully the people in her district, especially the Hispanic population will wake up and kick her out of office.

Even from the last time I visited Britain in 1998 things have gone precipitously downhill for this country. To have successfully stood up to Nazi evil just eighty years ago and defeat that evil, only now to succumb to monumentally self-induced errors like those due to immigration policy and the trashing of one’s heritage, is so tragic, so stupid, so much a waste of most everything that Britain has stood for through the centuries that it rivals or surpasses any Shakespearean tragedy.
There is great sadness in my heart about what has happened to Britain. It didn’t need to occur, but it has occurred, and it is evidence of idiocy on a colossal scale.
As for Liz Truss, she is “merely” a symptom of the suicidal decline, though this still does not exculpate her. What a massive disappointment she has proven to be—and shame on her forever. I was hoping she would emulate the resolve and insight of Margaret Thatcher. She has not. Not remotely close.
And now I expect even worse for Britain. Oh yes, the descent continues. Again, what a waste. And for what? For Islam, for Leftism, for spinelessness, for stupidity? No defensible reasons here. None.

I suppose that the UK has been in an inevitable decline for a long time now. It has had its day as a great power quite a long time ago. What worries me these days is that the USA is also looking divided and in decline to some degree. I have often heard about the American century when the USA has been the main world power by far, but that seems to be in decline to some degree. Maybe it is the entire western world that is in decline. The horrendous, inhumane Chinese regime seems to be gaining power while the western countries are in some kind of gradual decline.
Wellington says
Yes, tim gallaher, you are correct on each count, i.e., both America and the West in general are in decline—but this didn’t have to happen. I think part of this tragedy, but not all of it, is due to the West establishing day-to-day living with more ease than ever before—and this has been taken for granted. So is it also with the case of liberty, and this too has been taken for granted—and abused by all those who don’t comprehend, a la Mark Twain, that with freedom must come a sense of responsibility and overall common sense lest freedom devolve into license, and which is where we now are, more or less, with the weakest Western generation ever growing up with minds full of mush because they haven’t been taught that all civilizations and societies make many mistakes, often times egregious ones, but that the West did more to correct man’s mistakes more than any other civilization in history.
All of which proves this: If you don’t pass on accurate knowledge and wisdom to the next generation, expect a deluge of cataclysmic proportions. That’s what is happening in the UK, my country, America, and in yours, Australia. And elsewhere in the West. Again, what a waste and this didn’t have to happen. It just didn’t have to happen, but it is happening and it breaks my heart.

I agree with what you say, Wellington. I think that, even though you say the decline didn’t have to happen, there is a certain amount of softness and decline that will come about in any major power over time. To me, the USA now seems to be very divided what with this critical race theory and all this self loathing among many left wing people in that society. We have plenty of that same bullshit in Australia. We had a Prime Minister, John Howard, who ages ago, probably back in the late 1990s, called this the “black arm band” view of our country’s history, where the left wingers see everyhting as terrible and “racist’, as though our western societies were just evil. With all this infighting and self loathing, this stinking Chinese regime sees its big chance to run the world as being just around the corner. Something that was interesting on the news yesterday, heard it on the radio news, out here was that some group from the UN tried to get into some jail here, no doubt to say how badly we were treating prisoners, and they were told to bugger off. The State government had told them to get lost, which I thought was great. Apparently the UN busy bodies are angry about it.
tim gallagher says
What you say, milo, is very likely true. All I can say is that I hope that our western countries wake up and fight back against the globalist scum who want to tell everyone how the world should be run. I don’t know whether it will happen, because I see our countries as obsessed with self hatred and too many people seem to spend their time fighting and brawling with one another instead of uniting and working against the globalists and other destructive enemies.

tim gallagher says
Yes, it’s the house divided situation, James. So many people in all western societies seem to want to spend all their time brawling with one another and displaying self loathing for the societies they live in. Hopefully it is not too late and things can be turned around.

I keep hearing that, with problems with energy, etc, that the UK is about to face a terrible winter and people will freeze to death, so this type of chaos with the Conservatives is just what they don’t need, but I suppose when the pressure is on, then that is when things descend into chaos. I guess that the Conservatives will limp along and then lose the next election because people will see them as a rabble. I couldn’t believe how long the process went on for when they had rid themselves of Johnson and then took ages to decide on their next leader. It seemed to take forever.
Fitna says
As my sociology prof used to say “you can have any politician you like, that your masters can live with.” This is why Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Theresa May, etc. have all been abject failures.
None of them dealt with the issue of Islam, rape-gangs and ofc the ongoing invasion of the UK by third world migrants mostly from Islamic countries. It’s almost as if they want to be conquered by Islam.
The question is who is pulling their strings? The reason the majority of British people voted for Brexit was to take back their independence and not be subject to the dictates of the EU, so that they could stop the migrant invaders. The elites did everything they could to scuttle Brexit and then delayed on making it happen.
UK elites have all the power they need to end this problem, something that ordinary people don’t want and yet they continue with one lying PM after another who promised to fulfill the public’s demand and they continue to play games with the public.
Are they really that dense/stupid to not know one day the Muslim population will double and triple and then eventually come after them? Do they think themselves so immune and invincible that they’ll avoid the riots and civil war this can lead to?
Why are European Leftists continuing to help Muslims after all the incidents of gang-rapes, terrorism, criminality and so forth? Do they not own a tv or smart phone where they can watch the news? Do they actually want Muslims to destroy our freedom and way of life? It’s insane that the West has allowed this experiment to continue for so long.

A. More migrants, B. less taxes on high earners, as drivers of growth?
A. This may generate more GDP in total but not per capita, (aside from trashing the culture and crashing the infrastructure).
England is the most crowded country in Europe apart from San Marino, the Vatican and Malta.
B. I have yet to meet a high earner who worked harder or better when his nett income was increased. I know plenty who worked less, including GPs and City traders.

“Why should Americans care about Britain’s government? Because the parallels are stunning. Trump, who unlike the self-seeking, short-sighted empty suits in the establishment wings of both major U.S. parties actually represented the interests of the American majority, got into office only to spend his term fighting off efforts by the D.C. swamp to take him out – after which, despite his remarkable accomplishments, his immense popularity, and Biden’s status as a cadaver, he lost re-election under exceedingly dubious circumstances.
The situation in the UK is strikingly similar: both the Tories and Labour are dominated by blinkered, mediocre careerists whose personal ambitions and fealty to woke ideology, the globalist agenda, and big corporate interests (but not small businesses) far outweigh any loyalty they feel to the voters who put them in office. “The Westminster establishment,” thundered GB News’s Dan Wootton on Thursday, “is stacked against the people – and thus against democracy itself!”
