Westman says
Inflation will be a driver to favor small families. A US man in 1950 had no doubt that he could raise a family on one income. Today many couples are unable to support a large family with 2 incomes. A lot of pets should be expected yet any trend toward zero children is indicative of selfishness and would result in a less mature society.
Japan has an, earlier, similar decline in childbearing without resorting to replacement by immigration. They seem to understand that their culture would suffer without controls.
According to people who study demographics, the world population is expected to peak at 9 Billion and somewhat decline due to low birth rates. Supposedly, the raising of immigrant income will lead to having fewer children. I’m inclined to think that’s only true if the immigrants are self-supporting.
The EU is a testing ground for all these, yet unproven, ideas about immigration from radically different cultures.
