Using Jihadists in Ukraine May Be Backfiring on Russia

The correct answer to the question, “When should you arm and deploy Jihadists? is, “Absolutely never.”

Unfortunately, it’s a lesson that absolutely nobody has learned. That includes us, it also includes the Russians. Putin envisions a Greater Russia built around an Islamic alliance and has claimed that Islam is closer to Russian Orthodoxy than any other form of Christianity.

In his responses to questions, Putin stresses that “Caucasians must not be afraid to live in Moscow or Russians to live in the North Caucasus.” Instead, he continued, “all citizens of Russia of whatever faith or nationality must recognize that we have a single common Motherland”

“From very beginning,” the Russian leader said, “Russia was built up as a multi-national and multi-confessional state.” And after saying that “the state exists to serve the interests of the majority,” he added, “you know, we have Eastern Christianity and certain theoreticians say that it is much closer to Islam than [Roman] Catholicism is.”

It’s a convenient rationalization that makes a mockery of Putin’s “Defender of Christianity” posturing when sending Chechen Jihadists into a Christian country. 

Regular readers know I don’t put much stock in the propaganda coming from either side, that said, this doesn’t strike me as a huge reach.

Ihor Yuschenko, 61, a former colonel in the Ukrainian Armed Forces who once served as the deputy chief of staff of ground forces in the Donbas in eastern Ukraine, watched in horror as a war crime took place right outside his window in broad daylight.

According to Yuschenko, a column of Russian troops advancing through the town stopped and opened fire on his street in central Bucha on Feb. 27, killing two pedestrians. This column had included Chechen fighters known as Kadyrovtsy, members of various military groupings who are loyal to Chechnya’s local strongman, Ramzan Kadyrov, known as “Putin’s soldier.” Yuschenko said he was able to identify them by their black garb, their use of Islamic slogans, and Kadyrov’s name on their body armor…

According to Hurin, Ukrainian civilians were not the only people the Kadyrovtsy allegedly brutalized in the town. Hurin said that residents he spoke to in Borodyanka, which lies northwest of Bucha, recounted what the Kadyrovtsy did with injured Russian soldiers they brought there from Bucha. “They would bring heavily wounded Russian soldiers to a big hospital they had there, and those who were very heavily wounded, they would just shoot them,” he told The Daily Beast. “And no one other than the Kadyrovtsy did this.”

Did this actually happen? Like everything coming out of the conflict, it’s a huge, “who knows”. 

But what we do know is that using Jihadists in wars invariably backfires on the ones using them. That includes Muslims, like the Assad regime which tried using Al Qaeda to go after Americans in Iraq, only to pave the way for ISIS, the Saudis, who have repeatedly faced blowback for making use of Jihadis, and it goes double for non-Muslims, whether it’s us or the Russians. Arming, training, and deploying people who hate you never leads to good things.

Plenty of Americans were killed by Afghan “friendly fire”. The Chechens are a good deal worse.

  1. To hire jihadists to fight on your side ensures there will be war crimes. Such war crimes are normative in Islam, but illegal according to the latest international protocols that regulate the ethics of warfare.

    Every Chechen officer (if they have a military college education) is FULLY aware of the rules of warfare. Because they are Muslims, they may or may not choose to implement modern rules of engagement. If they do not, the Chechen officers are war criminals.

    comparing Christianity with islam; Christians with mozlums…is akin to saying bunny rabbits and snakes…who can tell them apart?

    mozlums are snakes and are ready to murder without so much as a checking whether or not the victim is gonna’ shoot first and ask no questions, or if they are just two little old ladies out to pick up a few veggies for dinner.

    • I can’t help thinking we should have ignored Kuwait and the Saudis in 1990. We should never have participated in the first Gulf War. It led to the no-fly zones in Iraq and the US and Britain spent years protecting the Kurds and Sha in Iraq. (Our bases in Saudi Arabia were a major reason for al Qaeda attacks on America.) Maybe we should have let Saddam take over Kuwait and let Muslims fight their own wars. What did we get for our efforts? Thousands dead on 9/11 and two more decades of war while arming and training ‘peaceful’ Muslims.

      • In my opinion, there is no “peaceful mozlum’…they learn war and murder of anyone not exactly like them from the earliest age. Very few abandon this teaching, while many fully embrace it There may be some who are willing only to be observers, but they cheer when their side does some killing. And being the ones that are “helping” them on one day, are the targets next time around.

        It’s like the person who is helped with money or gifts and when reminded of this, says, But what have you done for me lately?
        mozlums don’t care who they fight and kill as long as it furthers islam’s takeover of the world’s land and people.

        Completely agree w/ you: we should have taken mercenary approaches to those wars. When Saddam occupied and annexed Kuwait, we should have recognized it and cut new deals w/ him. Heck, at the time, we could have had a deal whereby he could take the other Gulf countries as long as he didn’t hike oil prices, and he left Israel alone. It would have gotten rid of the Sauds, who were busy enabling Osama

        It would also have strengthened Saddam vis a vis both Iran and Turkey, and let those 3 duke it out

          If ALL US laws were enforced, and the mainstream media practiced proper journalism / conducted due diligence, muslims in the United States could be effectively marginalized.

        • Actually, James, I was referring to our isolating the Muslim world–Dar-al-Islam.

          But I very much agree–Muslims in the West should not be kowtowed to, mass invasion of Muslims should be halted, and deportations should start, beginning with the worst Jihadists.

      • We, meaning the US mainly, should never have: backed Iraq against former US ally Iran; not have given Saddam a greenish light to invade Kuwait, (see reports on April Glaspie’s meeting with Saddam); not have invaded Iraq and toppled Saddam in GW2; not have appointed the clueless Paul Bremer to sack the Iraqii, army, police and thousands of Baath party officials in the civil service..
        The sounds of many thunders which continue to write the future..

  3. Given the brutality inflicted by the Russian military on Chechen Muslims during the ’94 and ’98 wars–and vice versa–why has Kadyrov allied with Russia in Putin’s invasion of Ukraine?

    • B’cos he got what he wanted from Putin – total ownership of Chechnya, including shariah rule there

      Which begs the question – if a Russian, following Putin’s advise, decided to settle in Grozny, is he expected to convert to islam or live as a dhimmi there under Kadyrov?

      • There are non-Muslims, including ethnic Russians, living in Chechnya, Infidel. They make up about 2% of the population there (they were over 30% of the population in 1979).

        There’s a lot of pressure to convert to Islam. Especially bad is pressure on young Russian women, who are often kidnapped and forcibly converted to Islam. This is technically illegal in Chechnya since 2010 (at least it imposes a large fine), but it is still very common.

  4. Chechens or no Chechens, the sort of unbridled, bestial brutality seems to be the modus operandi for Russian armies, whether Red or not. It matters not which war this is, murders of civilians, mass graves, rapes, gross looting, wanton destruction and all that done with diabolical glee of a conqueror who does not envision his own defeat follow Russian armies wherever they go. Denials in the face of more and more info coming out of the area either make the Russian leadership appear evil, callous and cynical for denying the obvious or completely incompetent while unable to control its soldiers or insulting our intelligence. Probably all three, all at once with an extra “don’t care what you think” from Putin.

    Why would Ukrainians murder 1000s of their own civilians repeatedly as some ghoulishly gruesome “false flag”? Also, I don’t buy the destruction of non-military targets (hospitals, schools, food storage, fuel storage) being caused by Ukrainian soldiers using the structures to fire at Russians. Any dummy would know this is the fastest and surest way of being fired upon (civilians or no civilians) and losing international support that has been whipped up to a level Israel could only dream of, should even one image appear on social media to confirm this assertion. Russia doesn’t need excuses to attack such targets. This is their Дар аль-Харб.

    My granny, who came from what was called Kresy, never had one good word to say about Russians or their “liberating” army or their presence in post-WWII Poland or USSR trade deals with Poland. She was probably a bit prejudiced from living in the area invaded by the Red Army in September 1939 and again in 1944-45. Being forced to resettle to Lower Silesia post 1945 wouldn’t have improved her ubiquitously sour disposition.
