Michigan: City reaches settlement with Hamas-linked CAIR after police remove Muslima’s hijab for mugshot

The Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) indefatigably pushes the notion that Muslims are victims of widespread harassment and discrimination in the U.S. This is in order to deflect attention away from jihad terror activity and to buttress the notion that counter-terror scrutiny of Muslim communities is simply more of this persecution. But actual “hate crimes” against Muslims are so thin on the ground that they have to be manufactured, as in this case. It is a simple security issue, as well as a matter of precise identification, that all head coverings should come off for photos. That should apply to everyone, not just to Muslim women, and is not due to “Islamophobia.” But last December in Minnesota, a Muslim woman was awarded $120,000 for having to remove her hijab for a jailhouse mugshot. These lawsuits are a cash cow for Hamas-linked CAIR and its clients.

Ferndale, MI –  In October 2021 a Muslim woman was pulled over for a traffic stop on 8 Mile Road and subsequently arrested. According to a lawsuit by The Michigan Chapter of Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), the woman was searched by a male officer and had her hijab (Islamic head scarf) forcibly removed for the booking photo.

Those decisions not only cost Helana Bowe her dignity, but they have also cost the City of Ferndale an undisclosed amount of money in a financial settlement over the case.

CAIR-MI released a statement, explaining “that the city of Ferndale and Bowe have reached a full and satisfactory settlement of this matter that involved the city instituting new policies allowing Muslim women to maintain their hijab when a booking photo is taken and prohibiting cross-gender searches in the absence of an emergency as well as a monetary settlement.”

“We are pleased to announce this settlement and believe that the policies that Ferndale has put in place will help protect the religious rights of Muslim women who may find themselves in their custody,” said CAIR-MI Staff Attorney Amy V. Doukoure. “It is important to remember that the Constitution was written to protect those who are most vulnerable, and many of the rights protected by the Bill of Rights were enacted to safeguard our freedoms, specifically during interactions with law enforcement. Religious freedoms remain intact, even when facing arrest or incarceration.”

In October 2021, CAIR-MI filed a lawsuit in the Federal District Court on behalf of Bowe alleging that Ferndale had violated her rights under the U.S. Constitution as well as the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA).

Ferndale Police Community Engagement Officer Jill Mahlmeister told Oakland County Times “Since October, all city departments have undertaken cultural sensitivity trainings facilitated by the Islamic Networks Group (ING). ING, the chosen facilitator was selected by the City’s Racial Equity Action Team. City Manager Joseph Gacioch requested additional education for all city departments following the October incident.  Additionally, the Ferndale Police Department immediately reviewed and updated its policies regarding religious head coverings.”…

  2. Every time a city gives in and “settles,” mozlums know all they have to do is have one of their own break the law, have their photo taken, be searched, and then sue the city and the pd and whomever else they can name.

    It’s a plan….they plan it out, the woman breaks the law…knowingly breaks a law that will get her arrested. The officers follow the procedure that is followed with every arrested person…male and female…get searched, fingerprints taken, photo of the “mug” and any dangerous objects, drugs, and even money is take from the perp.

    mozlums….esp the c.a.i.rats …are aware of this and are using it to get large sums of money.

    Cities should fight back. If a snake-handling religious person was breaking the law, was arrested and had their snake taken away, would they be able to sue and say it was a blow to their “dignity” and they were “humiliated” and embarrassed and it was their “religion” that was being denied? Would he win? Would a city “settle” rather than go to court and win?

    mozlums have been known to hide stuff in the females’ clothing…be it the all over garbage bag style or the ugly scarf. This should be reason enough, but the photo is meant to show what the person looks like so they can be identified at other times. The ugly scarf, tied tight around the face, squishes the fat, distorts the features and hides the neck, ears and hair.

  3. CAIR’s “A Correctional Institution’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices” (follow the link) says, in its first sentence, “Most inmates adhering to the Islamic faith, usually do so [= come to adhere to the Islamic faith] after incarceration.”

    Am I interpreting this right? The majority of imprisoned Muslims converted to Islam only after being imprisoned? (What does “usually” mean in this case?)

    • Mark, they are just saying that most practicing Muslims remain practicing Muslims in prison.

      But you are not wrong–in the West, most male Infidels who convert to Islam do so in prison. And why not? It is the only creed that sacralizes almost all of a felon’s crimes.

  6. If–big if–politicians, police personnel, and so-called journalists wanted to learn what hijab actually is (no, it’s not just a head scarf), and its true primary purpose, they would.

    And they would then be able to publicly challenge CAIR “reps” to explain why 20th century “kafir” Americans, women, in particular, should respect the supremacy it represents.

Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e.screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed.”

    Who, exactly, do Muslim women believe they are superior to here?

  7. The purpose of the mugshot is to physically identify the convicted person in future. A good photo is essential for police purposes.

  9. Islam is NOT a religion protected by the Constitution. Islam and Sharia Law are intertwined and inextricably linked. Sharia Law is “repugnant to the Constitution”. “ANY law that is repugnant to the constitution is void”-Marbury v. Madison, USSCt. (1803).

    Gee I wonder if this judge would allow a muslim parent the right to kill their daughter because she dishonored them by removing her JIHAB in public?

    Whenever and wherever religious law conflicts with man-made U.S. law.

    For example, your question about honor killings for failure to comply with religious laws.

    woman is arrested and refuses to remove her Hijab for a photo. This is the resplect for the law that CAIR says Muslems observe. (??????) KEN

    1. Why was she away from her home Quran 33:33
    2. Why did she come to the attention of the Police Quran 33:1
    3. Was she in the presence of the owner, father, husband, uncle, brother someone from her family that she can’t marry.
    Etc,etc.
