Turkey’s interior minister: ‘We will save Syria and Iraq from the hands of America and Europe’

For over two decades now, I’ve been saying that there needs to be a global reconfiguration of alliances based on present-day realities. The United States maintains alliances today that were developed in the Cold War era in order to fight the Soviet Union. Soylu’s statements are one indication of why these alliances are outmoded.

“Interior Minister Soylu: We will save Iraq and Syria from the hands of America,” translated from “İçişleri Bakanı Soylu: Irak ve Suriye’yi Amerika’nın elinden kurtaracağız,” Birgün, April 16, 2022:

Minister of Interior Süleyman Soylu, Governor of Istanbul Ali Yerlikaya and Mayor of Esenler Tevfik Göksu attended the opening ceremony of the “Goodness Fair” event organized by Esenler Municipality.

In his speech here, Minister Soylu claimed that Turkey will be better tomorrow and said, “We know the law of neighborliness. We are the children of a civilization and belief, in which those who go to sleep with their neighbors starving are criticized, and we are the sons of a nation rich with lands, underground riches, people and civilization. Today’s Turkey is better than yesterday’s Turkey. Tomorrow’s Turkey will be better than today’s Turkey. Because those who try to inflict torment and cruelty around us, and those who try to separate us from our brotherhood and solidarity, will not be given an opportunity. Just as Turkey is today, it is a Turkey that will not allow the world to persecute and contemplate those who try to end the brotherhood. We will provide this,” he said.

Arguing that they were criticized for protecting the Middle East geography, Soylu continued his words as follows:

“Whoever criticizes, criticizes. Were we going to say that people should not lose their mothers, fathers and children there? For hundreds of years, we have been flocking to this geography from the countries around us. Now we have another responsibility on this land. We will be very rich, powerful, strong and we will not give an opportunity to those who want to establish oppression in the world. We will not do it like Europe and the West. We will not separate children whose hair and skin are black. Today we help all over the world. We help Bangladesh, as far as Africa. People are helping, not us. We are honored with the help of our nation, our state, our country. There is only one reason why they came to us today, they cannot separate us from each other, our brotherhood and our values. Today we help Ukraine, Iraq and Lebanon. We are also present in Azerbaijan-Karabakh today. We do not thank those who want to take the Eastern Mediterranean from our hands, under the leadership of our President. We are not the old Turkey. Just as we brought peace to the Southeast, we will save Syria and Iraq from the hands of America and Europe and bring peace there as well.”

    Where is this Southeast he is referring to?

    • Mark, by “southeast” he means Syria and Iraq, which are south east of Turkey. They were also, not incidentally, part of the Ottoman Empire.

  3. Optimally, a free and prosperous Russia, which will never occur under a cretin, a Cold War relic, like Putin, would be in NATO by now and Turkey by now under Erdogan would have been kicked out of NATO.

    Well, what is optimal seldom occurs in man’s history. Actually, very seldom.

    NATO, the greatest alliance in history for the protection and promotion of freedom, is not outmoded in its primary quest. What is outmoded are people who cannot understand this and cannot understand that a NATO with a free Russia in it and Turkey out of it would be a giant statement about the greatness of Western Civilization, taking on all other comers.

    What an opportunity lost. What a waste.

      The West (mostly USA) didn’t give Russia the opportunity of joining a so civilized NATO. The US breaking it’s promise not to expand NATO into east Europe began in 1990 culminating with 12 new members mostly bordering Russia.

      • And NATO trying to get Ukraine as a member conveniently forgets the 60s, when President Kennedy rightfully raised a stink about Soviet missile bases in Cuba, which is still some distance from DC. Contrast that w/ NATO missiles in Ukraine, which would be very close to Moscow. Had Belarus gone the way Ukraine has, Moscow becomes to NATO what Miami became since 1962

        Not just that, Ukraine’s attempts to join NATO in 2014 was one of the things that triggered the Russian occupation and annexation of the Crimea. Had they done nothing and Ukraine joined NATO, Sevastopol – the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet – would have been lost to NATO

        At any rate, NATO as an organization is so mission deprived that it wants to add climate change to its mission statement

      • Avenger here has always been an apologist for unprovoked Russian aggression. Putin wants to seize any land that was once under Russia’s heel. This explains his aggression to not just Ukraine, but also Georgia and Poland and other former Iron Curtain nations. Blaming the West for this is dishonest.

    • The other option would have been to formally re-define the mission statement of NATO to delete the goal of confronting the Soviet Union, since it no longer existed, and either disband the group, or declare islam as its new enemy, which it couldn’t b’cos Turkey – even Kemalist Turkey – was a member

      Problem is that bureaucracies never wanna change even if the underlying function of that agency is redundant. One example is that the DOD has a budget for working w/ the Ethiopian navy. Well, in 1993, Eritrea seceded, making Ethiopia a landlocked country, but this project was neither modified to work w/ Eritrea instead, and nor did it go away. So we now have the DOD working on a project w/ the navy of a landlocked country

      NATO makes about as much sense as today’s Ethiopian navy in the workings of the DOD. But like any good bureaucracy, they hated the idea of change, and so did nothing after 1992 about the fact that they lived in a post Soviet world

      The solution wasn’t getting Russia into NATO: it was getting US out of NATO. But try doing that, and one will be slammed as a Russian agent by Eric Swalwell, who knows how to keep secrets within close circles on a need-to-know basis, and would not have them squeezed out of him while he’s cheering “Yes, yes, yes” while playing bedshakers w/ Fang Fang

    So says the nation that constantly violates Greek air space and sea lanes. And invaded Cyprus and illegally occupies it to this day.

    All the better to annihilate remaining Armenians.

      they “Know” the law, they just don’t follow it. Like those illegals crossing the border and disturbing your peace, and making you worry, know they are doing an illegal thing.

      turkey’s mozlum gov is determined to bring in another empire and rule the world for islam…for the personal power it would give them.

      He says they will be ‘rich and powerful and strong’ and how important the ‘brotherhood’…mozlum brotherhood ..is.They are not “helping” anyone except themselves.

    Uh huh–in other words, save Syria and Iraq from being free of ISIS.

    And Turkey was *never* our ally–it is just more obvious now.

    This is not just boiler-plate optimism, so common in politics. This is a reference to the increased Islamization of Turkey. It is also a reference to supporting the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq–certainly not about Turkey providing any charity or humanitarian aid.

    He is also obviously slamming civilized Israel as well as the West.

    This is about the “solidarity” of Sunni Islam–at the expense of all Infidels and even non-Sunni Muslims.

    And the idea that Muslims do not discriminate against Blacks is laughable, given continued Muslim enslavement of Blacks in Africa.

    Then, he is for the Muslim destruction of Armenia–nothing to brag about.

    • Just like most of islamic doctrine, the idea that everyone would be happy if they were all muslims falls apart with just the slightest bit of scrutiny. I wonder if they’d extend that “neighborly” hand out to Israel lol.

  8. Breath-taking hypocrisy. Turkey’s damming of the Tigrisand Euphrates has reduced the water flow to Syria and Iraq by 40 and 80% respectively.
    The impact on water for humans and crops, has triggered a second exodus. 3.7 m Syrian refugees live in Turkey, for which Turkey receives ample Eu funds for their board and lodging. If I am wrong pse say.
