“‘Islam inherently violent’, ‘Quran plagiarised’: What Musa Cerantonio, an ISIS terrorist in Australia who abandoned Islam after 17 years of converting to it, said,” OpIndia, April 1, 2022:

Musa Cerantonio, a former Australian Islamist preacher who persuaded a large number of foreign terrorists to join jihadi terror group in Syria, recently recounted his experience when he openly abandoned Islam. The background behind Cerantonio renouncing Islam and reporting it to the author of the article has been detailed in an article published in The Atlantic.

Cerantonio turned to Islam at the age of 17 after being born Robert Cerantonio into an Irish-Catholic family. According to Philippine authorities, Cerantonio travelled to the Philippines in 2013 and used YouTube to advocate for jihad and celebrate the Islamic States of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). He was deported in July 2014 following his actions.

Cerantonio and four others were detained by Australian authorities in May 2016 for allegedly planning to sail to Indonesia with the intention of joining ISIS in Syria. Cerantonio was already communicating with ISIS terrorists on social networks for a long time before his arrest. He often used social media to demand the killing of US officials and to laud Syrian extremists.

Cerantonio repudiated ISIS and admitted his role in fuelling jihad in June 2021. He informed Graeme Charles Arthur Wood, an American staff writer for The Atlantic, that he had forsaken ISIS in a letter sent from Port Phillip Prison in Melbourne last year.

Dedication to tyrannical death cults led by suicidal maniacs is bad enough

In the article at The Atlantic, Graeme Wood wrote, “In block letters—the Arabic transcriptions neatly bedecked with diacritical marks, all in the right places—he explained his journey back from jihad.” Cerantonio stated in the letter that for the previous 17 years, he was completely wrong. “Seeing individuals dedicate themselves to tyrannical death cults led by suicidal maniacs is bad enough. Knowing that I may have contributed to their choices is terrible,” he wrote.

When ISIS advanced, Wood notes, “this neofundamentalist autodidact” possessed both the knowledge and the on-camera charm required to persuade thousands of other Muslims to go to Syria and Iraq to kill and die for the Islamic caliphate.

Quran is plagiarised

While in jail, Cerantonio began to read the Quran more thoroughly, focusing on the passages that perplexed him the most. Among these was the person known as Dhu-l Qarnayn, or “the two-horned one,” who appears in the 18th chapter of the Quran and is sometimes misidentified as Alexander the Great. Cerantonio discovered no connection between Dhu-l Qarnayn and the actual Alexander, but he did detect connections between Dhu-l Qarnayn and an Aramaic version of Alexander’s tale that was substantially fabricated. He assumed that the Aramaic version had replicated the Quran, but after getting a copy and deciphering it for himself, he came to the conclusion that the contrary was more plausible.

Cerantonio went on and added, “Realizing that Dhu-l Qarnayn was not at all a real person but was rather based on a fictional account of Alexander the Great instantly left me with only one possible conclusion: The Quran was not divinely inspired.”

Islam is intrinsically violent

“Of course, I would have preferred to have discovered all that 17 years ago and avoided much trouble,” he added. Cerantonio has so ditched not only ISIS but also Islam and religion in general.

He indicated that he was hesitant to go public with his defection because his detractors will say he was just trying to get out of prison early and not that he is fearful of being murdered by the Islamic jihadists.

When questioned why Alexander’s impersonation convinced him that ISIS was evil yet the group’s techniques of mass massacres and sex enslavement had never turned him off, he stated that the latter was coherent with the religion, but Alexander’s impersonation failed logical standards on its own terms. He was attempting to make the point that Islam is intrinsically violent and that no one should expect anything less….

Cerantonio stated that practically all of the programmes in jails in Australia and throughout the world are a waste of time. They present counter-arguments to jihadism that jihadists can readily rebut. He considered the idea of exposing terrorists to “true Islam” idiotic….

  1. Mr. Cerantonio without a doubt knows more about Islam than most Muslims. He has all the credentials for an Islamic Scholar. An “Islamic Scholar” is the man who pretends that the Quran is deep and mysterious, among other things. But since he isn’t a Muslim anymore he can and does reject the word salad of excuses Muslim scholars frequently employ to quell the doubt that Muslims are bound to have.

    I can’t know if he is tormented by his past or not but he seems brave and honest enough to still have a good life ahead of him. Admitting you got things very wrong for a long time is one of the hardest things a human can do.

    • As long as they are being allowed to win, there will be islamic scholars, and fools to listen.
      The idea of an islamic scholar is as bad a joke as the koran.

      • Agreed, roberta, but then very bad ideas like Islam, like Marxism and Nazism, have had untold millions buy into intellectual rubbish over and over again. And with horrendous results over and over again.

        But for me, the overall “winner” in this “category” is Islam, which has snookered more people over the longest period of time than any other nonsense posing as truth and wisdom in all of man’s history. Here Islam is #1, though, if you get my meaning, I like to think of it as #2.

        Any system of thought, polity or organization, secular or religious, which denies, or in one way or another is an opponent of liberty, should be treated as not only suspect but as invidious.

        Islam comes to mind first and foremost. So does China under Xi. So does Russia under Putin Ditto for Canada under the control-freak, Trudeau. So does the UN and its many ancillary bodies. So do Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and most certainly George Soros. So does the EU. Sad to say, the present Pope as well. And, of course, virtually all of the Biden Administration, which administration serves as a cruel, collective (and seemingly never-ending) joke upon the magnificent foundation established by the Founding Fathers of America. Yes, the Biden Administration is anti-America to its very core—not realize this and there is much one does not realize.

        A lot of villains and fools in our era. Hell, they’re all over the place. Hard to keep up with all of them so many are there. You betcha’.

        • Agree with most of what Wellington writes. In particular, the “villains and fools” he refers must surely be the MULLAHS THEMSELVES.

          All of the mullahs (and I mean ALL of them) surely know that the Koran is RUBBISH, because they have studied the gaffes and contradictions in the text as part of their training … so they may be able to defend the Koran!

          ALL of the mullahs know that the Koran is HORRIBLY FLAWED, and yet, they continue to extol it!

          The mullahs who preach the Koran are knowingly preaching rubbish. That surely makes them ‘villains and fools’ as well as professional CHARLATANS.

      It is SIGNIFICANT that he realizes the Koran is the result of a few hundred PLAGIARISMS from various religious texts in libraries in Iraq and Syria during the sixth, seventh and eighth centuries. These religious texts were ‘MINED’ for nuggets by the CALIPHS and their subservient staff. They crafted these many CITATIONS by MISCHARACTERIZING them and then blending them together in a BOUILLABAISSE of INCONGRUOUS ideas known as the KORAN.

      The Koran is one of the most self-contradictory texts in existence, and the mullahs, who preach it, must spend dozens of years learning all the RATIONALISMS that supposedly ‘explain’ the gaffes, errors and contradictions in the Koran.

      While the Koran claims for itself that it is ‘MUBEEN’ (clear), the Koran is definitely NOT ‘CLEAR’ … every fifth sentence in the Koran contains words or grammatically-wrong constructions that are BAFFLING and without a logical explanation.

      Allah is thus the MOST CONFUSING and CONFUSED communicator in history. The mullahs are in effect claiming that they must EXPLAIN Allah’s opaque words, because otherwise, NO ONE WOULD KNOW WHAT THE HECK ALLAH WAS SAYING!

  2. I can’t understand how this man would not have known that Islam is “inherently violent” from the moment that he began to look into it. When I read some parts of the Koran, the main impression I came away with was of the obsessive calls for murderous violence against the non-believers. This basic text seemed to be full of a violent mentality, so I think that this man must have been just fine and dandy with the violence in Islam when he joined Islam. It is good to hear that he now realises how evil and full of bullshit islam is. Unless, of course, he is merely lying about his awakening to islam’s vile nature..

      Well, the answer is that the dawa-preachers HIDE ALMOST ALL OF THE BAD stuff from new converts and teach it at a much later time after the new convert has been established in fanatical Islamic belief. The next step is to teach the new converts to HATE and DESPISE the DIRTY KUFAAR who reject Islam. THEN, and only then, do they teach JIHAD and KILLING FOR ALLAH.

      The mullah very gradually induce the new converts to become fanatical killers.

      • This is often true, Mortimer–there are certainly some fools who join Islam believing the claims that it is peaceful.

        But if someone converted to *join ISIS* then I doubt this was the case with this particular Jihadist.

    • To Wellington … it took years for him to admit to himself that the Koran is badly written plagiarism of Christian, Gnostic, Jewish and Zoroastrian texts that existed at the time and which we are able to identify.

    • To Wellington: furthermore, Roberto Cerantonio is ‘auto-didacted’ and didn’t study the ancient languages of Hebrew, Syriac and Koiné and so it took him a long time to figure out that the scholarly books coming out of German and English universities about pre-Koranic writings were barking up the right tree … namely the tree of plagiarism.

      The story of ‘Dhu’l Qarnayn’ (the one with two horns … Alexander as seen on Macedonian coins) was plagiarized from the ‘Romance of Alexander’ a Christian text in which they culturally appropriated Alexander as a pre-Christian serving the Christian god. The Koran in turn re-casts this same figure as a pre-Islamic Muslim serving Allah … even though the real Alexander was a polytheist who worshipped the RAM-GOD ‘AMON’ of ancient Egypt.

      The two-horned Alexander in the Koran is cultural appropriation of a famous figure to enhance the story of a new Holy Arab Empire of the caliphs.

      • Mortimer, I would not assume that Musa Cerantonio is a scholar who has been reading books out of British and German universities about pre-Koranic writings. Really, one need not have done so–let alone have studied Hebrew, Syriac and Koiné Greek–to recognize that Islam stole much of its framework from Judaism and Christianity.

    Imprisoned jihadists who leave jihadism and EXPLAIN WHY, should be eligible for early release.

  6. Having done the things he admits to, such as recruiting for ISIS, I personally think prison is exactly where he should be. Would we take the word of an imprisoned serial killer who suddenly proclaims he has realized that killing people for the fun of it is wrong and set him free? Of course not. This fellow is worse than a serial killer. He has played a vital role in the immeasurable suffering and destruction that ISIS will go down in history for. Personally I think he should be executed and so should many scores and hundreds of his fellow rape and death cult “brothers.” How many former prisoners of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp have been set free only to reappear in theatres of war across the globe as the jihadists they are?       This letter is full of tosh–for instance, it says that no one who hasn’t mastered Arabic can issue Fatwas–without noting that Al-Baghdadi speaks fluent Arabic. Then, it says that in Islam one cannot kill the innocent, without noting that in Islam no one who is not deemed Islamic can be considered innocent.       Yes, this meme–with slight variations–has been going around for some time. The most common one I’ve heard is “a radical Muslim will cut your head off. A moderate Muslim will hold your feet while he does it”. I don’t know who ultimately coined this, but it is spot on.
