Tell me more about Ukraine’s western liberal values, please.
In an address to his nation delivered Sunday, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky announced an order “combining all national TV channels, the program content of which consists mainly of information and/or information-analytical programs, [into] a single information platform of strategic communication” to be called “United News.”
The move means the end, at least temporarily, of privately owned Ukrainian media outlets in that country. Zelensky claimed the measure is needed to combat alleged Russian misinformation and “tell the truth about the war.”
Along with the media consolidation, he banned “any activity” by 11 political parties.
The emergency actions were taken under rules for martial law. Zelensky claimed he was trying to institute a “unified information policy.”
Those are all euphemisms for a totalitarian system.
Now, mind you, this kind of thing is standard in much of the world, including Russia, where there’s no meaningful political opposition on the air, and media outlets toe the party line. But the whole argument for Ukraine was that it was supposed to be better than Putin’s Russia.
It’s also hard to see what the point of such a move would be if Ukraine is truly unified. You only need to resort to totalitarian measures when the country isn’t.

Zelensky’s ‘liberalism’, or Putin’s? What’s the choice? During WW2, Britain had a coalition government. Everybody was reading from the same page until the Nazi threat passed. Zelensky is doing the same thing in an East European way.

This is a David versus Goliath struggle that is similar to the American Revolution. Many atrocious things were done by the American patriots and many lies were told in the pursuit of independence.
This is a life and death struggle for Ukrainian independence and temporary censorship is required at such a time. Churchill had censorship in UK, but he kept Speakers’ Corner open during the entire war and provided lots of beer to keep up morale.

Infidel: I put nothing past the wretched duo, Fauci and Collins. We know they funded lab work at Wuhan, Fauci at least twice going behind directives not to—in 2014 and 2018. But I have no solid evidence that they funded anything in Ukraine and as for how long it takes to dismantle such labs I should think it takes a long time though I do not have enough technical knowledge to determine with accuracy such duration.
From all I have come across these were Soviet labs in Ukraine. I will change my mind when I am presented with solid evidence otherwise.

I do not trust Zelinsky at all! There is plenty to find out about his connections to the New World Order cabal, and I include Biden and the Democrat leadership in this.
With this comment I am not talking about the horrors Putin has unleashed with his immoral (in my judgment even with all the unknowns) invasion or the terrible suffering of the Ukrainian people or their fight to defeat the invading Russians.

Infidel: Now having watched the Tucker Carlson segment you provided a link to, I don’t know what to think. Perhaps it’s both a dismantling of Soviet labs but also the development of other labs by the US in cooperation with Ukraine. As Carlson pointedly asked, why choose the poorest country in Europe, i.e., Ukraine, to conduct any sensitive medical type research? I will keep an open mind about this. Thanks for the link.

Infidel: I effectively agree with you on both points in your 9:14 P.M. post of today. As I stated months ago here at JW, I would not ship out dangerous bio-research to a country like Norway or The Netherlands let alone to China, if indeed such research should be conducted at all.
Again, I think we are closer in views than a first take would indicate. Moreover, thanks once more for the Carlson link. Right now, I am of the opinion (and it’s only an opinion) that the US was indeed trying to clean up a mess left by the defunct USSR in Ukraine while at the same time inexplicably “farming out” dangerous research to Ukraine. Not sure where the truth ultimately lies but that mankind is in a giant cluster-f..k at present does seem pretty clear.

Not a very convincing argument by Greenfield with whom I rarely disagree but I do here.
As a example, Poland in the interwar period was hardly a democracy, indeed under Pilsudski from 1926 to 1935 it was, at best, a benign dictatorship. On the eve of Hitler’s invasion of Poland in September of 1939 it was still, at the least, a semi-authoritarian state. So, does this in anyway exculpate Germany’s invasion of Poland on September 1st of 1939? Of course not.
Pointing to other wrongdoing does not excuse the wrongdoing du jour. Besides, geopolitical matters are paramount and come with many downsides when they are massively transgressed, another example being Saddam Hussein’s invasion and takeover of Kuwait in 1990, and Kuwait was anything but a democracy then (still isn’t).
If the standard to excoriate an invasion of another country by a totalitarian regime is based on the invaded having to be a true democracy, then the entire world order is in deep trouble. Ideally, an invaded country is a functional democracy and all the more easy to defend, but life is seldom optimal and it certainly is not with sundry nations states that are not real democracies but that doesn’t mean invading such states is then not all that bad.
It still is. Very much so. And with all kinds of repercussions for the truly democratic and free polities that exist out there in this sorry-ass world.

I agree with you. I immediately thought of Kuwait. Its authoritarianism didn’t stop us from coming to its defense after it was invaded. Saudi Arabia is another ‘ally’ with a less than democratic government. Nations have permanent interests. Daniel Greenfield’s view amounts to making the perfect the enemy of the good. I’m no fan of our involvement here, but it’s also true that if Russia takes over Ukraine, then Russia will be right on the border with Poland. There will be no neutral nations between Russia and NATO countries.

Not good–but we already knew that Ukraine was not a full democracy.
But this still **does not** condone Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. Then, Russia itself is no democracy, and has crushed freedom of speech and freedom of the press during its entire history.
And many nations, even democracies, have limited the press during attacks–I think of England during WWII.
Ukraine still has the moral high ground here, and I stll stand with them against this brutal invasion.
As to the future, Ukraine may well continue her moves towards becoming a full democracy if she is able to maintain her freedom. This will *not* happen if she is destroyed and conquored by Russia.
Then, as I have mentioned before, other authoritarian thugs are watching this closely–China is already seizing disputed uninhabited islands, North Korea is talking missiles that can reach the US, and Turkey is saber-rattling at Greece, and Iran is further emboldened.
The world will *not* be safer if we abandon Ukraine to Russian aggression.
And Ukraine is still better than Putin’s Russia because they didn’t invade Russia–Russia invaded them.

Russian soldiers fought in Syria for 2 years and created the technique of HUMANITARIAN CORRIDORS:
1. From 10 am to 5pm they GUARANTEED that ANY civilian who wanted to leave a besieged city could,no harm,NO papers asked.
2. MANY SOLDIERS took advantage of it and escaped ( it was what the Russians WANTED, to diminish the number of enemy soldiers fighting in the city).

So CIVILIANS and soldiers who are deserters can escape.

Strongly seconded. gravenimage. Russia, from Putin on down, is engaging in war crimes unless huge numbers of people are lying or delusional, which is so remote that it amounts to virtual impossibility.
No wonder German women and children in the last months, weeks and days of WWII, as detailed in John Toland’s “The Last Hundred Days,” did all they could to get to either American or British lines because they knew what would happen to them if Russia “liberators” caught up with them.
British and American military attaches with the Russian Army wanted to shoot Russian soldiers because of the massive rape and carnage they inflicted as they moved westwards to Berlin but were told by their superiors they could do nothing because Russia was our ally.
Well, nothing has really changed. There is a deep flaw in the Russian character, profoundly deep, and one knows this or should know it. What is happening in Ukraine is first and foremost Putin’s fault and doing but it is not only Putin’s fault and doing. It is a heritage of malevolent Russian dysfunctionality stretching back centuries.
Frankly, I for one am tired of Russia never learning. Way overdue that it does. It could start by realizing that its own best interests are in alignment with the West and not with thug regimes like those of China, Iran, Syria and North Korea.
But no sign yet Russia has learned. I fear it never will.

1. The Russian army fires at places from which rockets and firing come from. If it happens to be from a building or house then the army attacks, but only if there is firing from the place.

A few days ago 30 missiles destroyed a training center where 1,000 mercenaries or/and volunteers were, going to fight for Zelensky.
The 30 missiles were NOT detected by NATO’s radar.
Either the Russians have created missiles that can’t be detected by radar, or they can jammed the radar system so it does NOT detect missiles.
5. Plus only 2 countries have the hyper-sonic missiles ,the fastest in the world,China and Russia. Even if detected they can not be stopped by a missile defense system.
