What an immense boon to our troubled republic that we have clear-sighted, selfless public servants of the quality of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Make Mine A Double), who keeps us all on the straight and narrow with her eternal vigilance in the cause of truth, justice, and the socialist internationalist way. AOC, like all Leftists, sees racism everywhere, in every conceivable situation and has just found some more: she claims that the welcome that is being accorded to Ukrainian refugees is more wholehearted and comprehensive than what was accorded to earlier waves of refugees. And why? Because they’re white, of course, and the earlier refugees were brown. Of course! How could we not have noticed?
AOC told Rachel Maddow on MSNBC Tuesday night that “I think the world is watching and many immigrants and refugees are watching, and how the world treats Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees should be how we are treating all refugees in the United States.” The difference was obvious, at least to her: “The way the world treated Syrian refugees versus the way the world is greeting Ukrainian refugees is a very stark contrast. I think the way we are looking at immediate granting of TPS (temporary protected status) which is what we need to be doing, as well as many others, is something that we need to keep in mind.”
Oddly enough for such a pioneering and original thinker, AOC was actually echoing claims that the New York Times made at the end of February: “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has pushed tens of thousands of people out of their homes and fleeing across borders to escape violence. But unlike the refugees who have flooded Europe in crises over the past decade, they are being welcomed. Countries that have for years resisted taking in refugees from wars in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan are now opening their doors to Ukrainians as Russian forces carry out a nationwide military assault.”
Are Europe and the U.S. really being more welcoming of Ukrainian refugees than they were of “brown” refugees? Not surprisingly, AOC and the Times are ignoring some important distinctions. The Ukrainians, most importantly, are fleeing an actual war. The Syrians, Iraqis, and Afghans that the Times mentions were fleeing war also, but Europe and the United States have also been inundated with economic migrants from relatively peaceful regions, who tell authorities they’re fleeing war in order to present a more convincing case to be allowed to stay.
Many of those migrants, moreover, came just to live on the generosity of European welfare states. In 2017, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière said that many migrants wanted to settle in Germany because its “procedures and reception conditions are generous” and “the benefits for refugees are quite high.” Fully 40% of welfare recipients in Germany are migrants. In Sweden, almost 700,000 migrants are getting money from the state.

Yes, watch closely how these Ukrainean refugees will respect the countries they come to and become productive citicens. I’m sure most of them will go back to their homes where their men are waiting for them after having defended their country. So by all means watch what’s happening here all you want, then maybe your rich neighbors in the Middle East can find inspiration and not simply send you all the way to Europe and America for a free ride..

Gee, I seem to remember the flood of Muslim refugees who were made up almost entirely of young men. Where I’m seeing the refugees from the Ukraine made up of woman and children. See the difference in the two cultures?

Also Rod, the Ukrainians didn’t demand anything when they set foot in another country, they didn’t leave a trail of rubbish wherever they went and they are not demanding to be sent onto another country like the UK or US.
These women and kids are actually grateful for the assistance they are given.

Precisely! If anything, Ukraine prevented most of their men from leaving, whereas Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya and all the countries that sent those refugees did nothing of the sort. If anything, Turkey is probably gleeful at all the chaos that they’ve managed to unleash on Europe

AOC seems to be competing with Al Sharpton for the race-hustling championship. She is still losing because she rarely shows up at the location of the claimed offense while Al makes the effort. Maybe she stays around DC in hopes of fulfilling her freudian slip fantasy – a date with a GOP Congressman.
The Ukranians are real refugees of war and tied to their homeland. They will go back to live, not for vacations, and have no religious beliefs of supremacy over, or entitlement from, unbelieving hosts.

Speaking of racism, I recall that after not just 9/11, but every jihad attack in the world, we were constantly urged by people on both left and right not to be islamophobic. Funnily enough, that message to avoid guilt-by-association gets totally lost when it comes to the Russians
In the case of muslims – who as RS and others always accurately point out are not a race, the duty of jihad, which is what all the muslim terrorists cite whenever they do their deeds, regardless of what the alphabet soup organization they form, there is a clear connection b/w the jihad terrorists and the global ummah community they emerge from. It’s the islamic texts – the quran and sunnah. Jihad is one of the many duties of muslims, and while a considerable number of muslims don’t do it – either b’cos they disagree w/ it or b’cos they’re too afraid to do it despite agreeing w/ it, it’s still worth evaluating which muslims oppose it, before giving them a pass
In the case of Russians, otoh, there is nothing intrinsically Russian about claiming former Soviet territories – their ‘near abroad’. And even if a Russian does morally support resurrecting the Russian empire, that’s no more a crime than Mark Steyn considering himself an old school imperialist. Such a Russian, unless he’s being conscripted into the Russian army invading Ukraine, is no threat to either Ukraine nor the rest of the free world. And even though something like 70% Russians might think highly of Stalin, or support retaking Ukraine, there is nothing to indicate that they want to destroy their limited standards of living in order to get there, the way muslims do w/ jihad
Despite all that, the worldwide boycott of everything Russian – from the kids of the oligarchs to Russian sports stars to celebrities – is stunning to watch. Just substitute the term ‘Russian’ w/ ‘muslim’, and imagine most Western countries dealing w/ muslims in exactly that way. Can every muslim sportsman – be it in soccer, cricket, whatever – and also ban all muslim assets in the West. Crack down heavily on halal everything, ban all mosques, expel as many muslims, do what Eric Swalwell suggested for Russian students to muslims students – expel and ban them… Can anyone imagine:

ⓑ The backlash against it?
Yet this is exactly what’s been done to the Russians. Unfortunately for them, they live so much north and in the coldest geography in the world that there is no way they can even self-identify as BIPOC, even if they wanted to. And so the world gets away w/ treating them worse than the jihadis, who’ve killed more people worldwide than the Russians have killed in Ukraine.
Again, this is not an endorsement of the Russian invasion: I’m pointing out the double standards that exist in judging the Russians vs the muslims of many races in many countries worldwide
