World Champion Surfer Offers A Novel Antidote to A Culture That Abhors Masculinity

Bear Woznick is a World Champion tandem surfer, a ninja black belt, a licensed pilot, a scuba diver, a skydiver, and a member of the Catholic Sports Faith International Hall of Fame. He has ridden a bicycle from San Diego to Jacksonville, Florida. He has run with the bulls in Pamplona and dealt with another type of bull in Hollywood, appearing on Hawaii 5-0 and Clean Break. He is, in other words, not exactly the type of man that is in vogue today in our deeply confused and wrongheaded culture. That’s why his new book, Deep Adventure: The Way of Heroic Virtue, is so valuable for a people that has lost an understanding of the value and meaning of both masculinity and femininity, and in many ways has lost its very self. In it, he details what American men and women need to get back on track.

Woznick is a deeply committed Catholic, and Deep Adventure is a profoundly Catholic book, but with an import that anyone who is worried about the state of American culture today can appreciate. In it, Woznick offers an antidote to our current cultural morass that is both strikingly new and as ancient as the hills: he goes through each of the cardinal virtues (justice, prudence, temperance, and fortitude) and the theological virtues (faith, hope, and love), discussing them in the context of athletic feats, and detailing how the same kind of challenges faces us both physically and spiritually: we can shrink back from the challenge and retreat into the illusory comforts of a life of ease, or take up the challenge, as difficult as it may be, and grow stronger in the effort to master it.

“One of my main concerns,” Woznick explained to me, “is men getting traction in their lives. I remember praying and having this idea of a man in a black pickup truck driving through gravel and spinning his wheels because there was no weight in the back of that truck. So I thought, that’s what I had to do. I have to put the right tool set and the weightiness of purpose in the back of that truck for men, so they can get traction. And there’s no better way to get traction than to focus on the four cardinal virtues of Aristotle and Plato and Socrates, and the three theological virtues of St. Paul.”

Woznick explained why these virtues were so crucial and all-encompassing: “The cardinal virtues are virtues of restraint: bringing things in and drawing the line, whereas the virtues of faith, hope, and love, you can have an immeasurable amount of those. That’s letting good things run wild. Because when you’re in love with an infinite God, you can love Him in an infinitely awesome, expressive way.”

    Two of the basic reasons why I was against the end of military draft for our young men were that the military experience gave them a good opportunity to test themselves at the same time that it got them out of Mommy’s and Daddy’s house.

    • Typically mommy’s house in today’s world. The dads are gone due to mommy’s schizophrenic liberalism. Today’s boys and young men don’t have a clue what “testing themselves” even means. The global narrative has been that of the anti hero for so long now, it’ll take a miracle to find it again.

    • However, I would not want to see the draft reinstated today. At one time, even those who didn’t want to go would either head to Canada or go begrudgingly serve, get it over with and go home.

      Today, I’m afraid those who don’t want to serve will go in and sabotage or cause other problems putting the troops or even the country in danger. So…..I’m not so sure that a draft is a good idea unless those drafted are THOROUGHLY vetted.

  2. Broken families, due to feminism, are a big part of the faggy soy boy and screaming-minority-lusting-leftist-white-woman problem. Boys and girls raised without fathers end up distorted and self loathing. Until that is solved, all of the virtue on the Earth isn’t going to help.

      The problem is not “toxic masculinity” but toxic feminist ideology what is producing herds of soyboys too afraid to stand up to screaming, hateful feminists.

      Young men brought up in fatherless homes become too often confused and ignorant of what it means to become a real man.

      A real man is not some tattoo sporting thug with a long rap sheet. That’s is just a resentful loser.

      A real man is someone like Bear Woznik who’s not afraid to run with the bulls in Pamplona, or hop on a bike and ride rain or shine all the way from San Diego to Jacksonville, Florida.

      These new generations indoctrinated with post modernist nihilism have to relearn what it means to be a real man. It is a long and arduous process of self-overcoming and self-mastery. That’s a real man.

    • You make sweeping generalisations about many things. Firstly it is not the majority of boys raised without fathers, though there are too many, especially in the black community. We can sadly see the effects of the latter every where, especially in gang culture.
      Many young men grew up without fathers after WW 1 and 2. we did not see the collapse of masculinity then. It is insulting to say that women are incapable of raising sons without a man in the home. Or that they feminise them..

        True enough, and it was tragic.

        My father lost his own father in 1918 during the Spanish flu epidemic. Luckily, he had a very loving mother – and older brothers who acted as “father figures”.

        My father went on to serve in World War II as an Army medic and afterwards used the G.I. Bill to help fund medical school.

        Definitely a member of the Greatest Generation.

  3. What I’ve seen is young men getting tattoos, thinking that will somehow give them what they’re missing in their lives. They’re seeking, but they’re seeking the easy way. There is no easy way. A tattoo won’t solve that problem. A tattoo that says “jeet kun do” won’t make you a black belt.

  4. When “strength” is seen as weakness….whether it is a man working and striving for his family, staying true to his values, or a woman deciding to stay home and give birth to babies she and her husband will love and cherish, then the whole society goes awry.

    Males have been told that they must have a “feminine” side and females are told that, not only *can* they do anything a man can, but they must get out there and do it. If boys and girls don’t *listen* to this nonsense, then they are insulted, demeaned and called traitors to their gender.

    Now, people as young as toddlers, are being told that they are not the gender they were born, but can be any gender, “fluid,” or “trans” or other lying garbage.

    Truth has been attacked since satan the devil called God a liar and proceeded to lie to Eve. Many have followed his lead. But, Truth will always be revealed and will win in the end.

    For me: I still enjoy seeing old movies where a *real* hero comes in and saves the day, using masculine skills to rescue the weaker…not in intelligence or moral strength…ones, the little kids, the old codgers and elderly ladies, young girls, and the young woman with whom he might fall in love. Call me whatever, IDC.
    Clint Eastwood comes to mind or the whole troop of the American West in the “Magnificent Seven.”

      Last night, my wife and I watched Clint in “A Fistful of Dollars (1964)”

      Absolutely loved it, especially the part when “The Stranger” frees Marisol from her kidnappers.

      Of course the “woke” crowd would call it a prime example of “toxic masculinity”.

      • Those westerns were a treat and still are for some of us who appreciate that men are men and women are women and both have roles that can satisfy needs and wants.

        I recall the “dollar” movies and the “Good Bad and Ugly”…as being really entertaining and there is so much in them, more than one viewing is needed to get all of the points made.

        Question: Was Lee Van Cliff the “bad” or was he the “ugly” or was it “Tuco”? I know “bad” was supposed to be Angel Eyes, but Tuco seemed to fit the description too. And neither had the good looks of Clint. Good movies are complicated. And the music was so much better than any “rap” heard today.

        I guess liking these movies makes me “unwoke,” Have never been a follower of the crowds.

      I’m still serving my deportation to the San Francisco Bay Area, residing several soviets to the south. The local classical music station out here has gone significantly “Progressive” over the last handful of years.

      One of the pieces they played repeatedly was the theme music from “The Magnificent Seven” so I decided an e-mail request for it was in order. And thusly I wrote:

      “My masculinity is in need of a giddy-up, so would you cut the theme music from “The Magnificent Seven” out of your musical corral and let it go for a good long gallop.”.

      Surprisingly, they played the music, but my e-mail intro was edited to remove the initial phrase.

  5. My guess is there are a lot of leftist men that suffer from ED. Predictably, their condition has been brought on by leftist women. The left will protest toxic masculinity right up until the shtf.

    • With all respect, tgusa, ED seems to be a physical, not a psychological, condition.

      • It can be, and often is, psychological. The guy may have some problem, then begins to worry and the worry keeps it going even if the original problem is solved. Fear, worry, concern about “performing.”

  6. I also believe that the lgbt trend on the left is a direct result of the poor relationship between the sexes on the left. We need a scientific study on that. Except for maybe a scattered few leftists wont date dirty conservatives. Leftist women especially avoid the toxic masculinity types. Leftist men are disgusted with leftist females and many turn to same sex relationships instead.This is why conservatives can reject the lgbt platform. That is an internal problem within the left. In all my life I have never felt the need to scream, I’m a heterosexual man and I prefer sex with women! Would you like me to go in to more detail? I doubt it.

      • That entire post was targeted at leftists. You know conservative gay men, OK, good for you. I don’t want to know nor do I care what someones sexual preference are unless it directly involves me.

        If someone went around constantly talking about their heterosexual preferences people would begin to consider that harassment. I don’t know how we got to the point where people we may not know think others want to know their sexual preferences.

        • Same for me. I don’t want to know; it’s TMI, and I don’t consider it any of my business. I worked for quite some time at a company run by them and they hired sp very many and nothing was kept *secret*…difficult to work there. The people I worked the most with were nice enough, but I found out way more than I ever wanted or needed to know.

          And like you, I never expected strangers to want me to know such stuff.
