Despite plans to host Israeli President Isaac Herzog next month, Sunni Turkey will never consider normalization with Israel, stating that “it will not turn its back on its commitment to a Palestinian state in order to broker closer ties with Israel.” Turkey supports Hamas and the jihad against Israel. This is how the country views Jews and Israel:
- A Turkish nominee for the Constitutional Court called for the destruction of Israel.
- In 2017, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was enraged over a Kurdish referendum on independence from Iraq. He blamed “the Jew” for it, and threatened war.
- In 2018, the Turkish daily newspaper Yeni Şafak, which is close to Erdogan, called for an Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) “army of Islam” to attack Israel.
- Last April, Erdogan declared Israel to be an enemy of Islam. He called upon all of humanity to “follow closely Israel’s hostility against Islam.”
- A month later, when Israel was being attacked by a barrage of Hamas rocket fire and was forced to defend itself via Operation Guardian of the Walls, Erdogan asked the Pope to “mobilize the Christian world” to support the jihad against Israel. Erdogan also accused Israel of a “massacre” of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
- Turkish media recently blamed “Jewish influence behind the scenes” for Armenian deportation and genocide.
“Turkey says it will not abandon Palestinian support for closer ties to Israel,” Reuters, February 8, 2022:
ANKARA, Feb 8 (Reuters) – Turkey will not turn its back on its commitment to a Palestinian state in order to broker closer ties with Israel, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Tuesday, ahead of an expected visit by Israeli President Isaac Herzog next month.
The two countries expelled their ambassadors in 2018 after a bitter falling-out and relations have remained tense but Ankara has taken steps to mend strained regional ties, including with Israel.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said Herzog would visit Turkey in mid-March, the first such trip in years, adding the two countries could discuss energy cooperation. Herzog has yet to confirm the visit. read more
Ankara, which supports a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, has condemned Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and its policy towards Palestinians, while Israel has called on Turkey to drop support for the militant Palestinian group Hamas which runs Gaza.
“Any step we take with Israel regarding our relations, any normalisation, will not be at the expense of the Palestinian cause, like some other countries,” Cavusoglu told reporters in Ankara, referring to the rapprochement between Israel and some Gulf countries that has angered Turkey.
“Our position there is always clear,” he added. “These ties normalising a bit more may increase Turkey’s role regarding a two-state solution as well, as a country that will be in touch with both countries, but we will never turn back on our core principles.”
Gulf states that have established ties with Israel have sought to reassure the Palestinians that their countries are not abandoning the quest for statehood, despite Palestinian leaders having decried the deals as a betrayal of their cause.
While Erdogan has spoken to Herzog before during the tensions, the Israeli presidency is a largely ceremonial role. In November, he spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, the first such call in years.
Erdogan’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Monday there was a “positive approach” from Israel since the formation of their new government, according to broadcaster A Haber, while Bennett told reporters “things are happening very slowly and gradually”, when asked about the possible visit to Turkey.

Are the Turks so stupid that They don’t see the whole palestinian thing is a scam?
Infidel says
Why is President Herzog visiting Turkey at all? If anything, Israel should downgrade, if not completely snap, relations w/ Ankara and leave them high & dry. The Palis don’t have much leverage, or else they’d have demanded that Turkey be the one snapping relations w/ Israel
SAFI says
My guess is Jerusalem is betting on Erdogan’s defeat in the elections that should normally take place next year and to be honest snapping those relations would just be an electoral boon for him which they would rather deny him. But as for viisiting and “seeking closer ties”, yeah, I also consider that to be a mistake for several reasons.
Infidel says
Erdogan won’t lose any elections, as his support from the islamic base of his country is strong. The Kemalist Turkey that Israel may be hoping for ain’t coming back!

Turkey says it won’t ‘turn its back’ on Palestinians to seek closer ties with Israel
…………………
Turkey under Erdogan has been increasingly hostile to democratic Israel, so this does not surprise. Rmember the Jihad flotilla?
Jon Sobieski says
There have been few articles about Turkey’s economic collapse that is actually happening right now. Inflation at 40%, gas shortage, foreign currency shortage (Turkey doesn’t have any reserves left). Maybe they want to get some money out of Israel?
