My latest in PJ Media:
Why did Mitch McConnell break ranks with the Republican National Committee and insist, contrary to a growing mountain of evidence, that the Jan. 6 incident was “a violent insurrection for the purpose of trying to prevent a peaceful transfer of power after a legitimately certified election from one administration to the next”? A clue came on Tuesday, when Larry Sabato, a popular far-Left historian, tweeted: “Of course it was a violent insurrection. Shame on every Republican, especially Members of Congress, who haven’t declared as much. Next: Admit Trump plotted a coup to steal a 2nd term. Then invoke 14th Amendment, Section 3 to ban Trump and coconspirators from future public office.” If it was an insurrection, then Trump, who has grown increasingly critical and contemptuous of McConnell, can be barred from running in 2024. The initiative to do this is gathering steam.
The Fourteenth Amendment, Section 3 says: “No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”
This was designed to keep unrepentant Confederates out of public office after the Civil War (although many did hold office, as more often than not Congress did vote to waive the prohibition). As PJM’s Rick Moran noted Wednesday, it’s already being used against America-First Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.), although he is fighting back hard. It’s likely to be used against others who are associated with the Jan. 6 non-insurrection as well.
But Cawthorn and the rest would just be a dry run. The great white whale these Captain Ahabs are hunting is Donald Trump, and they hope that in the 14th Amendment, they have found their harpoon. Some Democrats and establishment Republicans see this as the final stake they can drive into the heart of their nemesis Trump, ending his 2024 aspirations.
John Anthony Castro, a graduate of Georgetown University Law School who bills himself as “2024 Presidential Candidate,” as well as a “RINO Suing Trump Under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to Ban Him from Office for the January 6 Insurrection,” recalled that in mid-January, former FBI director James Comey called on Biden to pardon Trump. Castro saw this as a checkmate move, tweeting: “If Trump accepts the pardon, he has to admit guilt for January 6 and deal with the application of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment that disqualifies him from office. If Trump rejects the pardon, it legitimizes a federal prosecution. Trump is finished.”
There is more. Read the rest here.

Republicans should campaign on the basis of their principles, not a cult of personality.
Wellington says
It’s not a cult of personality where Trump is concerned. You are just repeating a Democratic and RINO talking point. It is admiration for a man who did so much for America in his four years in office even though hounded all those four years by Democratic, bureaucratic and MSM liars and persecutors. Besides, even assuming it is a cult of personality (it’s not), this doesn’t disqualify Trump under the 14 Amendment for running for office again.
revereridesagain says
I have reason to believe that the obnoxious and insulting “Trump Cult” ads now being run on CNN and even FOX were inspired by a certain cult “deprogrammer” I worked with for years in the Cult Awareness Network, which was brought down by the Scientology legal thugs. I have already let him know as forcefully as possible that his present actions are not only hideously unethical — calling someone with different political views a “cultist”! — but look to me like a throwback to his days of worshiping the founder of the Moonies cult as his “True Father” with Senile Brandon as his new “Uncle Joe”. Apparently he has learned nothing from his life experience except how to manipulate people.
This is just my own opinion from observation of the events of the past year, but it appears that this plot to use the 14th Amendment to block President Trump from running for re-election adds credibility to the charges of involvement by FBI or other agencies in the 1/6 “insurrection”. The DeMarxocRats will stop at nothing.
mortimer says
It’s not a cult (in the way there was a cult for FDR or Kennedy), because President Trump isn’t idolized. He is valued for his wise and effective ideas on the economy, full employment and international diplomacy.
Demeaning thoughtful support for Pres. Trump as ‘a cult’ is an intentional calumny fabricated to impugn the ethics and intelligence of Republicans.
His Fraudulency asked his fellow Dems to ‘turn down’ their calumnies, but they haven’t moderated their slanders one bit.
Infidel says
That’s precisely what Trump did, the Freedom Caucus people did. The way the differed from the likes of establishment GOP leaders like McConnell and McCarthy is that they actually delivered on what they promised, Others are happy to just promise things and keep those issues festering. The reason that the Dems and RINOs hate these Republicans is that they actually deliver on these issues, and get them off the table as campaign issues
gravenimage says
Roland, you need not like Trump personally to see that having Democrats bar Republicans from so much as running for office is a distrubing slippery slope.
Wellington says
A four-year civil war counts as an insurrection (at least seen by the victorious North) but a three-hour sit-in and walk-around in the US Capitol, many of whom in this “event” were waved into the Capitol by Capitol police, and not one of whom who entered the Capitol were ever charged with insurrection, hardly constitutes the meaning of insurrection as meant by the 14 Amendment. But Democrats and RINOs are so dishonest and so hate Trump that they will lie about anything to achieve their ends.
Also, it should never be forgotten that Trump said to those in DC on January 6th, 2021 to “protest peacefully and patriotically.” Never did Trump in any way counsel violence or anything constituting insurrection or rebellion (and those few in DC that day who did engage in violence should be held accountable). When you add to this that in 2020 over 500 violent riots occurred throughout America and billions of dollars of damage resulted, dozens of lives were lost and at least 1,000 police injured, and the Democrats in Congress, Democratic governors and Democratic mayors in huge amounts said nothing critical about these riots, which were truly insurrectional in nature and which often damaged government buildings (examples being the Portland, Oregon federal building and a police precinct in Minneapolis burned down), then the hypocrisy by the Democrats can be seen as rank and disgusting in the extreme. Nancy Pelosi herself in the midst of these riots in 2020 said, and I quote, “I don’t know why there aren’t more uprisings, maybe there will be.” Kamala Harris provided bail money to get violent thugs out of jail. The Mayor of Seattle, Jenny Durkan, referred to the violence in her city as “the Summer of Love.” And so on. But Trump who never approved of any violence whatsoever is the culprit, guilty of insurrection. Right.
Part of which (there are many other reasons) is why I have come to despise the Democratic Party (and RINOs), the very party that was responsible for the Civil War, the KKK, Jim Crow and which overwhelmingly opposed the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments, which amendments respectively ended slavery, gave blacks full citizenship and the right to vote and all three of which amendments were proposed by Republicans. Democrats also opposed various Civil Rights Acts, beginning with the first in 1866—and in the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 a greater percentage of Republicans in Congress voted for this act than did Democrats. And now the Democratic Party is only too ready to keep black Americans on the Democratic Plantation, which is the successor to the ante-bellum plantations, pathetically dependent on hand-outs by the government. Yes, my disgust with the Democratic Party is complete. Utterly.
gravenimage says
All true, Wellington–and the one person killed at this protest was an *unarmed woman*, shot by a member of the capitol police from another room. For an “insurrection” perpetrated by supposed “gun nuts”, this is rather astonishing.
somehistory says
Recent video released shows that the poor lady had been speaking with the police, and was trying to keep people from breaking the window…trying to get them to stop, etc., and only began to go through when she saw the guns and things going wrong.
gravenimage says
Yes, Somehistory–the more I learn the more appalling this case is. She wasn’t even the one trying to open the door. That this was deemed a lawful police shooting–without its ever going to trial, even–is unbelievable.

So very well stated !
The irony is that most all of the Jan. 6 “insurrectionists” were there to preserve the government of the people, by the people, for the people, so that it shall not perish from the earth.
The Democrat Party has rotted and is a cancer to American freedom. How can anyone who grew up in this country now be a Democrat ?! The Democrat Party leadership, who can be named, are the real insurrectionists !
They are the accusers, the liars, the destroyers.
cornelius says
Listen friends….my main concern is getting the Dems out of power. A Trump nomination would be a lightning-rod for the opposition to galvanize not just their base….but the political center. I had no problem with most of Trump’s policies….(except that he spent money like a Dem). But his rhetoric was all too often over the top. For example, his campaign speech when he said illegals “are rapists, drug dealers,”…etc.,etc., forever alienated some Hispanics who might otherwise vote Republican (and yes, I’m aware of how Hispanics voted in 2020, but I submit, how much better he might have done had he toned it down, or simply invoked the qualifier “some of them” when making an otherwise valid point; the Hispanic vote is poised to go almost 50/50 if we nominate the right candidate like Rubio).
I’ll surely vote for Trump as the lessor of two evils if he’s nominated. But at-heart, he’s a petulant adolescent who can’t control his tongue and who is carrying a ton of baggage from his previous Administration….and I submit that our chances of winning the WH in 2024 will be seriously compromised if he’s the Republican nominee.
I just wanted to put my two cents in….won’t be responding otherwise. I’ve learned the hard-way about trying to reason with Trump supporters….and I’m just not interested in dissipating my energies arguing with those whom I am otherwise sympatico on almost every issue.
Wellington says
Dennis Prager, cornelius, echoed your point just the other day. He said that Trump was the finest President in his lifetime (Prager was born in 1948) and did great good for America BUT he went on to say that Trump sucks all the oxygen out of the room and if he runs again it will be all about him and the Left (whom I have concluded are replete with a lot of villainous people) will then focus everything on Trump again and never let up. Thus, Prager thinks Trump should not run because of this.
Now, I must add that I kinda’ liked the way Trump never backed down, the way he called out the hypocrites on the Left and among the RINOs. The rebel in me enjoyed this many times (including his tweets). There is also the factor that Trump arguably got as much done as he did precisely because of his style. Take away that style and perhaps he would not have accomplished as much. For me, the main criticism I have of Trump (and I never would look upon him as the lesser of two evils if he runs again—this is where I must disagree with you since there is nothing evil about Trump but there is about the Squad, Pelosi, Schumer, many other Democrats and, yes, some RINOs too like Liz Cheney) is that he let too many people to remain around him who kept undermining him. Should he become President again I think he will clean house—or had better.
But your point and Prager’s is a valid one, not to be dismissed. Perhaps DeSantis is ideal. Not sure yet but I will never forget or forgive what the Democrats, much of the federal bureaucracy and MSM did to Trump for the entire four years of his Presidency. They undermined him from the get-go, including with outright lies (e.g., the fake Russian collusion hoax which the Democrats KNEW was a hoax), and thus I look upon such vermin as the real insurrectionists who disgraced the Constitution, the rule of law and democracy. The blame lies overwhelmingly with these reprobates.
gravenimage says
Cornelius, I take your point. Trump is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, and this may be even more the case if he runs again.
My main issue here is his opponents’ attempts to prevent his being so much as allowed to run–if this is allowed can you imagine the future of democracy here?
Whether Trump himself is the best candidate is a different issue.
PRCS says
I want a leader as strong as Trump without the bluster, please.
Someone like Pompeo, for example.
Infidel says
I’m fine w/ the ‘bluster’. It’s not like the Dems or the MSM will go soft on the likes of a de Santis or even a Ben Carson. The Left people are savages, and ought to be treated in exactly that way
Wellington says
Seconded, Infidel. I took delight in the bluster because it made Leftists go into hysterics and for me Leftists in hysterics is a pure viewing pleasure, a spectator sport.
Besides, and as you indicated, the Left will viciously and dishonestly go after any conservative and this is why so many times I enjoyed watching Trump get into their heads and drive them nuts. Leftists so deserved it, though I think DeSantis in his own way may be able to do this too.
PRCS says
A strong leader, please.
Calm, cool, and collective. Skip the bluster, and the nonsense, thank you.
No, Trump–General Pershing’s men did not dip their bullets in pigs’ blood.
Trump can run again, of course.
But there are better potential candidates: Pompeo, DeSantis, etc.
Wellington says
What if, PRCS, Trump is in reality the strongest of leaders even with characteristics that turn off some (N.B., they don’t turn off me though I understand that Trump’s style can even do this with those who think his policies are terrific). Don’t you want the strongest leader, the one who will get things done better than anyone else, regardless of their personality?
It’s not a matter of just denigrating Trump supporters who love the guy for all the great stuff he did for America by way of pointing out “defects” in his character and who want him to be President again. It is ultimately a matter of whom you want in the Oval Office making the best decisions on policy. Maybe someone like DeSantis would be the guy. But, and here comes the key question, what if this guy is Trump?
One more matter: If Trump had not been so terribly treated in the first place by Democrats, the MSM and the Deep State, perhaps he would not have had to fight back the way he did, a way that seems petty to many but which arguably was the only way to fight back—and Trump took that way because he is a man of great courage and will not put up with any bullshit and mendacity. This is why he reminds me of Andrew Jackson and Teddy Roosevelt and what the Hell was the matter with these two?
PRCS says
“If Trump had not been so terribly treated in the first place by Democrats, the MSM and the Deep State, perhaps he would not have had to fight back the way he did, a way that seems petty to many but which arguably was the only way to fight back.”
Bullshit and mendacity:
He was wrong about Pershing, ISIS has not been defeated, his administration did not pass the VA Choice Act, Mexico did not pay for the wall, Pence could not overturn the election…..
The list goes on.
He brought so much of that upon himself.
Infidel says
I will concede a few shortcomings of President Trump, even though I don’t think any of that disqualifies him from being President a second time. But I do hope he fixes them in this iteration:
‣Pay attention to the party, and who to back in primaries. Last time around, he was happy to defer to the GOP establishment, and make bad calls – like Luther Strange in Alabama over Mo Brookes, which resulted in the Roy Moore fiasco, or the endorsement of Mitt Romney, or the appointment of Ronna McDaniels to RNC chair. He has been carefully selecting who to endorse this time, but once he becomes president, appoint a real America first guy to that post, and fire Ronna
‣Don’t hire Jared or Ivanka this time. Last time, they were the ones who were unduly deferential to Paul Ryan, Reince Preibus and that group, and cost the 2 years that he had a majority. Mend fences w/ Steve Bannon and make him RNC chair, but keep him away from the White House. That way, he won’t get to leak policies, but at the same time, he gets to ensure that candidates for elected office nationwide are all strong on key issues like immigration
‣Take a more hawkish stance on China, and in fact, withdraw all US diplomats from there, close every consular office throughout the country except the embassy in DC, and then officially recognize Taiwan. Make it clear that the US debt wrt China is cancelled to cover all Covid expenses. Oh, and hike the tariffs on all US companies manufacturing in China. Either bring them home, or if not possible, move them to places like Vietnam or India
‣Withdraw from NATO and make it clear that the purpose is to focus on China instead. It will have the added benefit of making Russia less paranoid about Ukraine joining it. Right now, all the US troops being sent to Eastern Europe means that none of them can be deployed in the Pacific
‣Drive the passage of the RAISE Act in Congress and then sign it. It would fix both illegal and legal immigration
Wellington says
PRCS: Well, it is not often I have disagreed with you but I do here.
Putting aside Trump making NATO nations pay more, putting more sanctions on Russia than any President since Reagan, negotiating a far better deal for American workers by way of the USMCA replacing NAFTA, eliminating ISIS to almost no territory after its controlling tens of thousands of square miles of territory, eliminating Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, eliminating Solem Kassemeini, pulling out of the putrid Iranian nuclear deal orchestrated by the fool Obama, pulling out of the Paris climate accord which accord is based on bogus science and is about transference of wealth and not climate (which puny mankind cannot control anyway since ocean currents and solar activity far, far more affect climate than anything mankind does {N.B., the world war warmer a thousand years ago during the Medieval Warming Period, 700-1300 AD, than it is now and Michael Mann’s hockey stick comparison is totally bogus}), reducing black unemployment to its lowest levels in history, providing far more funding for VA hospitals, ditto for the military in general, having tax cuts which benefitted 83% of Americans, effectively having Mexico pay for the wall on the southern border by having some 25,000 Mexican troops on the Mexican side of the border stopping illegal immigrants, never mind the hundreds of miles of border walls constructed and which reduced illegal immigration by some 90% but which is now a disaster under Biden, et al. I think it is you who is stating bullshit.
As for Pence not being able to overturn the election, this is debatable. What if a Vice-President knows that a Presidential election was stolen, which the 2020 election clearly was (and for argument’s sake let’s assume it was). What is that Vice-President to do? In robot fashion confirm a bogus election?
I know Pence was in a difficult situation but assuming that the 2020 election was stolen, for which voluminous evidence exists (e.g., the Pennsylvania Supreme Court unconstitutionally, contra the state legislature, which has sole jurisdiction over Presidential election results per the Constitution, extending when ballots can be counted by three days; 234,000 Wisconsin voters who, by Wisconsin law were required to be removed because they had either moved out of Wisconsin or to another location in Wisconsin and thus had to re-register and yet NONE of the 234,000 were removed from the voter roles; and over 11,000 affidavits signed upon penalty of perjury testifying to voter fraud in the 2020 election (N.B., not ONE affidavit was signed upon penalty of perjury testifying to the 2016 Trump campaign colluding with Russia even though the Democrats pursued this made-up hoax for years—and far more rot along these lines), and all the ballot harvesting and absentee voting irregularities which disallowed such votes by a fraction of such votes before, even in the 2016 election, et al), should such a Vice-President still confirm a fraudulent election?
These are matters that must be answered in detail and not with a sweeping statement such as yours. Also, virtually every President has stated incorrect things at times and so pointing out Trump’s incorrect statements as a way of VALIDATING the bogus 2020 election is a non-starter. Why not start with the bogus Biden who has stated so many things which are not true (e.g., that the Afghanistan exodus was “an extraordinary success” or Obama back in 2009 in Cairo stating that Islam has done so much for the betterment of mankind, INCLUDING tolerance of the belief of others)?
Hmmm. I do have to wonder where the real bullshit resides. Your turn if you care.

Infidel says
Precisely! Not satisfied w/ sabotaging their own primaries, the Dems now wanna sabotage either GOP primaries (the way they tried to unsuccessfully in 2000 and successfully in 2008 for McCain) and failing that, try to use extra-constitutional measures to try and kneecap him
Trump needs to totally remake the GOP this second time around. Out w/ not just the McConnells and McCarthys, but also any doubting Thomas, like Lindsay Graham, Marco Rubio, John Thune, John Cornyn, Bill Cassidy, et al As well as some of the governors

Most likely Donald Trump is the best American President that this country will ever have in the twenty –first century.
Walter Sieruk says
In the annals of future history books certainly will, with ethical historians who write only truth, will print what an outstanding good President Donald Trump was and that he just and fair man who stood for justice and accomplished must for the advancement of the United States in only four years in Office.
In contrast future good quality history books will reveal what a despicable and evil man President imposter Joe Biden was and how he did everything wrong and terrible to tear down the United States and cause her to become a third world power.
So much so that the name of Joe Biden will rot in American history.
As the Bible informs its reader “The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.” Proverbs 11:7. [K.J.V.]
Walter Sieruk says
Donald Trump is a real, genuine American President. In contrast to the cheating vote stealing “President” imposter Joe Biden.
–
One major problem with impeaching the 46th President of the United States is that there is really no genuine 46th US President to impeach.
To explain that statement it should be known that With the United States of America there is a list/line of 45 US Presidents. So far there’s not a 46th American President. This is because Joe Biden isn’t a real, genuine, American President, Biden is only a criminally installed figurehead.

The Latest Democrat/RINO Plan to Prevent Trump From Running Again in 2024
……………….
Yes–that’s what claiming the protest on January 6 was an “insurrection” is all about.
PRCS says
Oh, yes, I do care.
“pointing out Trump’s incorrect statements as a way of VALIDATING the bogus 2020 election is a non-starter”
Nowhere in my posts did I infer that. Period.
Nor did I say I wouldn’t vote for him. I voted for him–twice.
Nor did I say he had not accomplished many good things.
To make it very clear: I WANT a leader as strong as Trump without the bluster, please.
And, yes, Trump absolutely brought much criticism upon himself–unnecessarily.
Why not start with the bogus Biden? Because the thread is about Trump, whose verbose behavior may have caused enough people–who might otherwise have voted for him–to vote for Biden.
Wellington says
PRCS: I’ll be brief here.
You mentioned some of what you think was Trump’s faults (and at least two of which as I pointed out in my previous post I disagree with) in the same paragraph that you mentioned that Pence could not overturn the election. This DOES imply there is a CONNECTION between all this by you.
I am legally and constitutionally unsure about what Pence could do. I have waivered myself on this and am inclined to think that the best thing Pence could have done on January 6th was simply not show up (interesting scenario, no?).
Your turn.
Wellington says
Oh yeah, one last matter, if “verbose behavior” by Trump caused some people to vote for Biden, then shame on such people who voted for Biden.
Superficiality and moronic thinking should never be used to inculpate someone like Trump. The fault lies ENTIRELY with the fools who used this as an excuse to vote for Biden, examples being Kasich and Whitman.
PRCS says
“if “verbose behavior” by Trump caused some people to vote for Biden”

PRCS: Thought you might want to read the above. Sorry, but listing Trump’s faults, including blaming Pence, made me conclude that it was a way of validating what many consider, myself included, a highly bogus and rigged election.
PRCS says
As a blue state conservative (El Dorado County, California) myself, I too have serious reservations about the 2020 presidential election’s legitimacy.
I can’t say with certainty it was ‘stolen’, but there was certainly great mischief; yes, bogus and rigged; though, it seems, unprovable.
Of course, without doubt, if Pence ‘knew’ beyond a shadow of a doubt the election was ‘stolen’–he had an obligation to stop the count.
I believe he didn’t do that because he didn’t *know* that.
Trump’s claim was, to me, the culmination of a litany of previous divisive, erroneous statements and actions which may have caused enough people to say “enough is enough” and vote for Biden.
I’m not one of them, but–if that is the case–I don’t want it to happen again.
Thanks for the discussion and the link.

I am obviously not a US Constitutional law attorney, but here are my “layman” thoughts re: Pence and January 6th, 2021:
Mike Pence was obligated to uphold the laws of the land. Even by January 6th, 2021, there was irrefutable evidence that election procedures were changed in several states without the involvement of the respective state legislatures, e.g. Pennsylvania. That is simply fact. And I agree with the linked article from Wellington regarding the intent of our Founders: the VP had an obligation to act as a check on blatant fraud.
At the very least, Pence should not have counted the electoral votes from states that did not follow their respective legislative procedures.
And I also agree with the feature article:
“…all the questioned votes in the seven swing states be returned to those states to be sorted out.”
