In any case, Zamfara is a Sharia state, so this sort of thing is not surprising. What is surprising is the readiness of the free West to adopt the same Sharia blasphemy laws prohibiting any criticism of Islam, under the guise of action against “hate speech.”

Three women in Gada community of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State have been arraigned before a Sharia court in Gusau, the state capital, for desecrating the Holy Qur’an.
Some accused, Rabi Bello, Hazira Bello and Hafsatu Isah, who were brought before Sharia court judge Garba Sahabi Gusau, were charged with desecrating the Holy Qur’an by staining it with blood collected after child birth and throwing it inside a toilet.
The evidence tendered before the court included the stained Holy Qur’an, 77 syringes full of blood collected after child birth, other Islamic books, a paper bearing the name of one of the suspects and many other things related to the alleged crime reportedly sanctioned by a necromancer identified simply as Tukur.
The women were said to have carried out the ritual to make money, according to the prosecutor….
Such acts are widely believed to have been masterminded by ritualists.

The demonic insanity of islam is never-ending. Such garbage….and the book of filth and degradation and evil is far from “holy.”
These women, believing this would make them money, are to be pitied.
I wouldn’t want one in the toilet, though, as it would soil the throne and dirty the water.

To me, it sounds like witchcraft. Witchcraft, spells and sorcery are very common among these tribes. They may have been trying to cast a spell on someone. The Sharia court would take that even more seriously than blasphemously treating Allah’s eternal words on paper. This could also be a hoax played upon innocent victims in order to incriminate them and have them put out of the way by their execution. It seems that execution may be a function of the Nigerian federal court, but I don’t know if that is the case. Someone who disrespects the Koran would certainly get the death sentence in a strict Sharia court.
Even suggesting that the Koran is not the words of Allah could also get a person killed.

From what I’ve read, Mortimer, I think it more likely that the victims here are nominal Muslims. “Witchcraft” like this is often used in the hope of transfering ‘bad blood’ from a difficult childbirth to the Qur’an in the hopes of securing the health of the mother and child. Oddly, this kind of thing would not exist if they didn’t on some level respect the Qur’an and consider it to have protective properties. Ignorance and superstition on both sides–but likely much uglier on the part of the Sharia court.

Superstition meets superstition–but it is Islam that has the power here. What will happen to these poor women?
Those accused of “balsphemy” in Nigeria can face anything from two years in prison to execution. In 2020, a victim, Yahaya Sharif, was sentenced to hang for “blaphemous” lyrics one of his songs:

Then, there have been riots and murders of those suspected of “blaphemy”–they are seldom prosecuted.
